Starting From A Blank Project?

Jun 3, 2012

I decided to explore deeper into how blank forms and controls are created.I don't know where to start. I'm not expert by any means I believe I just now the basics.I tried and start new project but instead of windows form template I used Blank Project. Added a module and creating sub main.I created a new class and copied few lines from a previous project and it gave me several errors.Brushes, Color, Font, Graphics are not defined. I am not sure if it's correct but when I added System.Drawing Reference and System.Drawing Namespace the errors was removed. Moreover, 'My' is not declared.

I would like to know what basic references and namespaces I need to add.(Note: I tried to add all the referenced and namespaces found when I create a windows form project but the errors was not removed)Moreover, how to create my own form and controls.

How To Compile Single Class Into Existing Project

Mar 18, 2010

I have a VB.NET solution (call it S1) which produces a .vb file (say File1.vb) to be compiled and then included in another solution (S2). S2 is a console app which I want to run from a cmd prompt, not VS. My plan is to shell out from S1 to run a batch file to do the compile and then copy the .dll file, overwriting the old one in S2 (then I can run S2 in a separate operation). Here's the batch file for the compile:

VB - Root Namespace In The Domain Project Is Blank

Feb 10, 2010

I have an VS2008 solution with 2 projects, WebUI and Domain; WebUI references domain. The Root Namespace in the WebUI project is:MyCompany. MyProjectName.WebUI. The Root Namespace in the Domain project is blank. (Namespaces are manually declared for all classes). So everything has been working fine, until I tried to reference a class in Domain via a fully qualified path: [Code]

Does this make any sense? So, then I cleared my WebUI Root Namespace, and voila, the fully qualified declaration then does work. However, doing this then seemed to invalidate the registration of all my user controls on my pages. The only thing that seemed to solve this was in the codebehind of each user control, manually add a namespace of MyCompany.MyProjectName.WebUI. which might make sense as perhaps the namespaces of the pages somehow had still retained the root namespace value. But, if I was to create a brand new aspx page and drop a user control on (this is before manually adding the namespace), even that page couldn't properly register it. Yet, the user control properly rendered in design view. so the VS UI seemed to be able to properly resolve it, but the compiler seemingly can't.

So from what I can tell, I can at least get things to work by manually wrapping user controls in the proper namespace. Why this is necessary for aspx pages, that have no namespace specified, to see the user controls, seems to make no sense. Is there some fundamental principle I am misunderstanding??

Bizarre Project Collapse - Can't Edit Or Add Anything Without Compile Error

Apr 20, 2012

I have been developing a Visual Basic 2010 .NET GUI based control application that has been growing over the last six months into quite an albatross. Suddenly, I have reached a brick wall where I cannot even edit a text label in the GUI without the following exception at compile time (debug) :

InvalidOperation Exception was unhandled

An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: Index and count must refer to a location within the string.

Parameter name: count

This is entirely code independent - it happens if I simply drag a new control onto the GUI without even any code behind it - Once it happens the project is hosed - even if I undo or remove what I did.I have reinstalled VB from scratch on a new computer, and same problem. I am using Windows 7 and this happens with VB Express, Even with a trial version of Visual Studio Ultimate. I am completely stuck.

Project References To Newer Framework Library And Does Not Compile?

I've been passed a solution that has a vb.Net 2.0 project that references to a .Net 3.5 library. The library compiles with out problem but the vb project does not. It complains of missing objects which are in the library which are correctly added in the imports. Also I see a yellow yield sign next to the reference library also when I add the reference it complains of the framework version difference. Any help is apritiated. Also I'm using VS10. Imported the projects with no errors. A colleague has this working on VS9.

VS Project Fails To Compile: Property Not A Member Of A Referenced DLL?

Aug 27, 2010

When I try to compile my VB.NET web project, I get an error that reads:[PropertyName] is not a member of '[Namespace.Class]'The class referenced is part of a dll that the project references. The property definitely exists in the referenced class, and its access modifier is Public. What's more, if I update the reference, or just remove it and add it back, the error goes away: the intellisense shows my property -- all is fine.. that is until I try to compile again. Then the error returns. I've even restarted Visual Studio to no avail. What is going on?[UPDATE]After Will's comment, I've changed the namespace to something I am absolutely sure is unique. Now, I am getting more compiler errors of the same genre. The compiler is not recognizing some of the overloads although they are right there in intellisense. Weird!

.net - If Then Statement Condition Being Ignored With Optimizations On?

Jun 16, 2010

I think im going mad but can some show me what im missing, it must be some stupidly simple i just cant see the wood for the trees.BOTH side of this if then else statement are being executed?

Ive tried commenting out the true side and moving the condition to a seperate variable with the same result. However if i explicitly set the condition to 1=0 or 1=1 then the if then statement is operating as i would expect. i.e. only executing one side of the equation...

The only time ive seen this sort of thing is when the compiler has crashed and is no longer compiling (without visible indication that its not) but ive restarted studio with the same results, ive cleaned the solution, built and rebuilt with no change?

Select Case Compiler Optimizations?

Feb 4, 2010

Does the VB.NET 2008 compiler selectively optimize Select Case Statements?

For example, a Select Case Statement with a sufficient quantity of integer cases could be organized as a binary search.

I ask this because I am curious whether or not I should opt for a Select Case in place of If Statements with multiple Else If's where integers or other basic data types are being compared.

DB/Reporting :: Database Communication Speed Optimizations?

Mar 25, 2011

I have a few questions regarding database speed issues, I want to learn more on this subject. I searched the internet a bit but could not find an answer that satisfied enough me so I thought i try here. I have used adodb for quite a while but never were in the need of doing it the fastest way. That changed a bit.Is there information on the internet or can you provide me with information that illustrates what the cost is of doing a while not .eof loop to populate a dropdownlistbox with a lot of values or using a different approach? what are the faster approaches? I understand it depends on the situation but i am interested in a summary of some ball park figures. Just to illustrate what is better to use in certain situations.

Does Making A Class NotInheritable In .NET Offer The Same (potential) Compiler Optimizations As Sealed In C#?

Jan 11, 2010

I've read that making a class sealed in C# is advisable in high-performance scenarios because it frees the compiler to make certain optimizations (e.g., inlining property getters) that it wouldn't be able to make otherwise. Is the same true for NotInheritable in VB.NET?

Enable The "Make Single Instance Application" In The Project Properties?

Jun 29, 2010

If you mark your application using "Make Single Instance Application" option in the application settings tab and run your application under a GUEST account or a restricted limited/standard account the application throws UnAuthorizedAccessException or CantStartSingleInstanceException.

Take the following steps to reproduce this behavior.

1) Create Windows Form application.

2) Enable the "Make Single Instance Application" in the project properties.

3) Log onto a GUEST account and open the application twice to simulate StartUpNextInstance.

We need developers to reproduce this behavior and post any valuable input if you experience these symptoms.

When posting information please include the following:

a) The operating system version + service pack.

b) The .NET framework version used.

c) Verify this symptom is present when running under GUEST account.

To workaround this issue turn off the "Make Single Instance Application" option ad create a Local named mutex in the StartUp() event.
