Complete" Is Always False. The State Is Always "interactive"?

Jul 30, 2009

I am wiring a startup script JavaScript function on Page_Load to fire like so:

ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(Me, GetType(Page), "page_init", "page_init();", True)

This function calls a couple of different functions to setup the page. One of those functions checks the document.readyState and makes sure it's "complete". This deals with images and I want to make sure everything has been fully rendered.

if (document.readyState == "complete") {

Everything works fine, until I need to write a byte array to the outputstream (using either Response.BinaryWrite or Response.OutputStream.Write() to give a file to a user. After that, the document.readyState is always "interactive", until I navigate off of the page and back. I have even used a setTimeout(myFunction, 1000); call if document.readyState isn't complete to recursively call the function until it is complete. It never reaches "complete".

I have researched this myself for quite sometime, and cannot figure out this behavior.

C# - Question Mark Indicates That This Is A Nullable (tri-state) Bool That Can Be True, False. Or Null

Aug 4, 2009

I am working through my new MVC book and of course, the samples are all in c# as usual. There is a line of code that says public bool? WillAttend { get; set; }

The author explains that the question mark indicates that this is a nullable (tri-state) bool that can be true, false. or null. (A new C# 3 convention.) Does vb.net support any convention like this. Certainly I can declare a boolean in vb.net and I can explicitly set it to Null (Nothing in vb.net).

.net - Why Does ASP.NET Access The State Server Even When The Page's EnableSessionState="False"

Oct 5, 2011

Our website uses our own custom-built session state management separate from ASP.NET Session State. But because a handful of special pages use SQL Server Reporting Services, we also need to enable ASP.NET Session State. Since we are in a load-balanced environment, we enabled the ASP.NET State Server (aspnet_state.exe or "Out-of-process Mode") on a separate backend machine.Today I noticed that when we temporarily brought down the machine running the State Service in our Dev environment, the Dev website stopped working ("Unable to make the session state request to the session state server.") This despite having EnableSessionState="False" on the page being loaded.Why would ASP.NET need to connect to the State Service when serving a request for a page that does not use Session State? This seems to happen even if the page does not use a Master Page, Base Page, or any User Controls. I searched through all our code-behind to ensure that we never programmatically re-enable Session State or attempt to access it.

As suggested by a user below, I tried creating a web site from scratch to retest this without any complications from httpHandlers, httpModules, or other custom logic.I used Visual Studio 2008 to create a new "ASP.NET Web Site" using VB.NET.I ran the site through VS, allowing it to enable debug mode and generate a standard web.config file.I added <sessionState mode="StateServer" stateConnectionString="tcpip=localhost:42424" /> under the <system.web> element and started my local ASP.NET State Service".I changed the Default.aspx page's EnableSessionState to False and reloaded the page = OK.I stopped the ASP.NET State Service and reloaded the page = "Unable to make the session state request to the session state server."At this point I was puzzled because other users claimed that they had tried something similar and did not experience the same issue. So I wondered if it had anything to do with using VB.NET (silly though that sounds.) More people use C# for ASP.NET, so I redid my test above with a C# web site, and lo and behold, no exception when accessing the page! I only got an exception if I set EnableSessionState to True and actually accessed the Session collection in code.This proves that VB.NET sites in ASP.NET behave slightly differently in that they access session state on each page, even if the page does not need to. Unfortunately this doesn't answer my original question: Why?I am going to cross-post this to the official ASP.NET forums and see if any gurus there can shed some light.

Interactive Screensaver Access Printer?

Oct 12, 2009

I am sure the screensaver wasn't meant to be used in this manner, but I have created an interactive screensaver for the company I work for which acts as a checkout station for calibrated measurement equipment.Part of this process is printing out a sticker using an SII SLP Label printer which is attached to the computer with the checkout station. Printing with the printer works just fine over the network from another computer (not running the program as a screensaver), but for some reason I am getting a -16 error (I believe that is "Unknown Error") when the program as a screensaver uses the local SLP printer. The only possible reason I can think for this happening is that screensavers aren't allowed to access printers. Is there some way to give the screensaver permission to use the printer? Currently the screensaver is able to access files on the network file share (such as the equipment database) just fine. If I were to create a TCP/IP server that acts as a proxy or go-between for the printer so that all the screensaver does is connect to localhost and tells the server to print would that work?

VS 2008 Sorting With Interactive Sort Of A Textbox In A Report?

Jul 4, 2011

I am trying to sort my report on the values in a column. The underlying query consists of a director colum a movietitle column and a rating column, for every movie a director has directed there is a record which off course shows the rating in the ratingcolumn In my report I have grouped by Director and created two other columns which are called: Nr of Films and averageRating. in the design view i used two functions to accomplish this. the first is: count('the field of the rating') and sum('the field of the rating')/count('the field of the rating'). This is working... but now I would like to sort the column, Nr of Films. I think I have to do this with interactive sort of the textbox which holds the column name(i.e. Nr of Films)

Use Yes And No Instead Of True And False?

Jul 15, 2010

I wanted to create my own type that acts like the Boolean type, except I wanted to use Yes and No instead of True and False.I kind of got close but it wasnt exactly what i was going for here's what i have:

[code]...

so i have to use an integer when i dim it like:dim b as MyBool = 1 then when you look at it in the watch window b = {Yes} so i could settle for that, but with a boolean you can do this:dim b as Boolean without setting it to anything it defaults to False mine however, is Nothing. 2 things: 1. How can i get mine to default to No 2. How can i make it work like this: dim b as MyBool = Yes instead of having to use the integer this is not a requirement for anything I just wanted to know how to do it

Complete Reference/dictionary For VB?

Aug 25, 2010

I downloaded Visual Basic 2010 Express recently. I did a few of the tutorials and now feel that I know the basics. I can start a project and know where to put code. I don't feel like buying a beginner's book and slowly learning all the different sections, keying in endless lines of code and learning things that I'm not interested in yet. I wish there was such a thing as a complete reference work of instructions, a dictionary or something. Then I could browse this and use the code words that I'm interested in. Also, books seem to only mention the most common code. I did find a reference on the Visual Basic Microsoft pages but it wasn't complete. Does anyone know where there is a complete reference?

If, on reading this, you think that my idea is misguided I don't mind being told.
