Consolidating Forms Into A Single Window?
Jan 8, 2010
I've got to the stage where I want to make changes to my application so that all of my forms appear to the user as a single window.
I have a main Form with a menu bar which opens up three separate forms. Only one forms is visible at any time.
One way to do this, that I can think of, is to place all the controls from each of the "auxiliary" forms on a panel contained in the main form and then show and hide the panels, when needed. I can envisage this being a big headache though.
Another way would be to give each form a menu bar and make it look like the main form so that the user would not know the difference (with a bit of luck).
I just wonder if there are better ways to do this. Maybe if I could incorporate one form into another form?

I am converting a VB 6 app to VB.Net. In the vb 6 version I have a table that contains roughly 80 fields. Over that table the users currently have a single form which gives 12 diferent views. Each view is placed on a different tab, which, although giving a distinct set of fields per tab, also leads to a ton of duplicated code. Changing the underlying table is not an option.
What I would like to do is to use a single datasource (containing all 80 fields), a single datagridview on the form, and have a combobox act as the filter choice for the differing views. Does my solution seem like the right way to handle this? If so, I'm not sure I know which controls would best be used.

I have done making the simple web browser to browser the webpage, but when I open some links they are opened in the external IE rather than the VB web browser, how can I force all web page to be opened in the VB software?

Not quite sure how to attack this one. If I have an array list how would I go about elminating duplicates but adding the values of those items together. In other words if I have one item that has a id of 9000 and a quantity of 5 and another item that has the same id of 9000 and a quantity of 10. How would I eliminate the duplicate but add the quantities

I'm doing a VB.Net subject at university and the major assignment is the creation of a WPF application. The application is management-focused (adding, modifying, deleting entries, etc). As these are all rather disparate tasks I'm thinking to create a tabbed interface for my assignment (in a similar vein to [URL]...
I'm a bit confused as to how I should go around approaching this? Btw, would this classify as MDI?We were recommended to create a menu system that listed all the options - upon selecting an option, a new window would be opened, the interaction would take place. If the user wanted to do something else, he'll close the window to be taken back to the menu screen.
This doesn't really seem like an elegant approach to me and it seems like it'll be an interesting exercise to implement the tab-based system I explained.I'd appreciate if anyone could point me in the right directions or give any hints as to how I should achieve. Is it possible, for example, to create each option in a separate xaml/code-behind file and then 'plug' these into each tab?edit: To clarify, let's take a hypothetical of an indoor soccer team management system. Let's say there are five different tasks the user can perform: 'Register a player', 'Modify players', 'Register a team', 'Modify team details', 'Add player to team'.
Each task is separate from the next. One way of creating the application is to create a main page with a button for each task. When a user click on each button, a new window opens up (for example, if the user clicks 'Register a player', a new PlayerRegistration window is opened).
What I'm looking for, as mentioned above, is a tab-based approach. In my application, if the user clicks 'Register a player' the entire PlayerRegistration xaml file gets loaded in a segment of the window. The same happens when the user clicks any other button.

I'm reading a binary file into a bindinglist of (t); to be bound to a datagridview. Each line in the file represents a single transaction but I need to consolidate and or filter transactions that meet certain criteriaI know how to do this from a mechanical standpoint (looping the list while adding each item, and adding a new item, or merging the data with an existing item), but I'm looking for a practice, pattern, existing components, or something else that I'm missing (I'm drawing a blank for keywords to search).I don't want to reinvent the wheel if I don't have too. I'm particularly concerned with speed and performance issues with 100k plus records to process in some instances.Currently working with .NET 2.0, but will move to 3.5 if a particularly sexy solution exists.

My program has two forms which get data from the same data source. After binding controls to tables and fields on both forms, I noticed each form has it's own apparently duplicate DataSet. Is it standard practice for each form to have its own DataSet even though they use the same ConnectionString and connect to the same database at the same time?

I've written an application with about 30 forms and am almost ready to publish, my biggest concern though is that i'm not sure if its a normal thing to do having all these forms and hiding, disposing and showing forms throughout the use of the application.I've toyed with the idea of converting to a MDI Child / Parent interface as well as having one form with lots of subcontainers that are hidden and then hiding / showing them as the navigational buttons are shown.Ive worked on this application for about 8 months now, but would be happy to rewrite the interface and appearance of it if i know that it is not generally an acceptable practice having forms flashing open and closed while navigating through the application.

I'm new to vb.net and I have what probably is a simple question, but one that I am stuck on. I'm trying to add a single item to a ca combo box at run time. For example, a user selects a category from the first drop down box at run time, say "Admin", I want to add a single item to the combo box below it: Not applicable.
cboTest.Items.Clear()
cboTest.Items.Add("Not Applicable")

Most of the apps I write have a base / home form and a few other forms (three of four typically) which pop up in response to controls clicked by the user. I'd like to be able to set some properties to be the same for all the forms in an app; particularly properties like BackColor and FormBorderStyle. Yes, I can manually set the individual properties for each form in the VB IDE, but I'd prefer to be able to have one line of code in the base / home form for each property along with one line for each dependent form which says something to the effect of "use the same property value as the base / home form has". Overall, my objective would be to have one single line of code in the app which, when changed, would apply the changed property to all the forms. For example, a single line which I can change to take the BackColor from Apple to Orange for all the forms ...

I have been working on a project which is used by a company's sale team, to combine all the wanted input data in one place allowing the sales team to show customers, where switching to them could save them money.
Basically what i want is a program which can save single records, which can hold data added in other text boxes, or indeed take the data from the list view boxes which is the intended output. I want to be able to save that data, then be able to Open it up again at a later date, and even modify it.
enabled me to save the three ways to identify a single record, the index number, company name and the date it was added. However I now need a way to save the data entered in my other forms to these single records.
