how to create a save to text file method with a try catch in the method in a class and then call this save method from a button on a window form. I am currently doing the save method under the button directly but to tell you the truth i would prefer to just do it one time and call it from different locations in the various forms i have, then copying it all the time.

I know how to create a source to get the strings from the text file using ReadLine method, but I have no idea how to split the strings in the text file by on the third commas and ignore the other strings while select with the matched strings on the listbox for each row.Here it is an example listbox Here it is an example items on the listbox

And here it is an example text file.
example strings one, any strings 1, any random strings 1, other strings 1, final end of strings 1

The listbox is display the list of an example items, so if I select the "random item 1" item on the listbox, it read the strings through in the text file on the first line to get the strings on the third commas in the same line which it is (any random strings 1) to split it while ignore the other strings (other strings 1, final end of strings 1) that come fourth and fifth commas. So, if I select the "random item 2" item on the listbox, it read the the strings through in the text file on the second line to get the strings on the third commas in the same line which it is (any random strings 2) to split it while ignore the other strings (other strings 2, final end of strings 2) that come fourth and fifth commas and so on...That is what I am trying to achieve by select the each listbox item to get the correct strings for each line in the text file that come on the third commas while to ignore the other strings.
Its a League Organizer, basicly ive started it off with 16 teams and end up with 1(winner) 16 box's on the far left, then 8, then 4, then 2, then 1. the 16 box's have "Team 1" "Team 2" etc... ive put a new/clear/open/save button in that order.
BUT this is my problem..when i save(Save Button) the text file saves all the text wrong it ends up like this...Team 1Team 2Team 3Team 4 Etc...
But i want it to save like this
Team 1
Team 2
Team 3
Team 4
Etc...

im trying to create a text file with some details that ive put into some text boxes.I got on screen
3 textboxes
2 buttons (which i would like to get their text from)and then 1 button to save details and exit.I got the coding place but i dont want a a dialogue box to come up i just want to save the stuf to a set folder location, will need to read the textfile to the same area, incase the user wants to change the data. I have to generate an XML file from several database tables. I could use the WriteXml method of the DataSet to do it, but the database tables are really huge and I can't add all those tables in the DataSet at the same time or it may cause a problem because of the big amount of memory used. Then I decided to use the DataTable's WriteXml method and save table after table, but the the generated file only stores the information of the last DataTable.WriteXml's call. How can I preserve the previous XML data when adding all that information?

I have this Quiz software that lets you create online multiple choice quizzes which are great for studying (I am in grad school and I'm trying to use everything I can to learn). So the Quiz software is great but it only lets you input questions by hand, one by one. I took a look at the .xml file that the quiz program spits out and came up with the idea to try and make a converter so that I can import many questions at once. I was hoping to try and solve this limitation by doing the following:
Take a .doc that say a tutor gives us with a bunch of practice questions, and then take that into Crimson Editor, and then format it so the question is on line 1, the multiple choice answers are on lines 3,4,5, and 6, (for the next question, the question would be on line 11, and the answers on lines 13, 14, 15, and 16, and so on) and then take that saved .txt file into my program, hit the generate button, and it will spit out the .xml file, and then import that into the quiz software to generate the online quiz.

I figured out how to open a text file by watching simple youtube tutorials, but I don't know how to have it generate the stuff and have it show up in the bottom text box. Neither the StreamReader nor StreamWriter have a method for replacing or removing Text from a text file, as does the string object. Are there any available methods for erasing just certain lines of text from a file, and then replacing them with others?

Is there anyway to save a thumbnail of an image, then save it so that, when viewed through My Computer, the thumbnail is displayed for the file. Basically, what I mean is to do something similar to the way you can see a preview of a pdf file, or Microsoft Word file, or Microsoft Expression Design file. I want to be able to open the file's containing folder, then switch to thumbnail view, and the thumbnail will be displayed as the image for the file.

View 9 RepliesOk so with my program i'm trying to create a save configuration I have it in my context menu so that I can click save configuration and what i want it to do is check to see what check boxes are checked and save those to a file (i.e. a notepad file or whatever works) that way I can save categories for customers or my own computer or whatever and than i'll just click load and choose the category I want and it will load the checkboxes that I want to install. I found a similar post but it's not really making sense to me. So i'm wondering what I need to do to make this work.
I'm also wondering how i'm going to load the configuration but I might have to wait on that one step at a time.

The files save fine, but when you go to save the file, if you hit the cancel button, it will overwrite the previous file you saved, because it's name was the same and it seems to save the previous file as the new name for your next file. Is there any way to catch if the user clicks cancel, and then exiting the sub if they did?
