I was just wondering if it's possible to create an app that interacts with a database hosted on a web server... or is it only possible using VB.NET? Also if it is possible, is there any good documentation or tutorials I could reference?

The connection string I am using is;"connectionString="Data Source=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx;Initial Catalog=xxxxxxxxxx;User ID=xxxxxxxxxxx;Password=xxxxxxxxxxxx"I can connect to the remote data using the "add data source" within Visual Studio and can preview thehosted data without anyssues however when I try to run the application I get an error stating;"The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)"

I want to create a tiny program that writes itself. VB.
Basically, I start it off with the smallest coding possible. Then, I want it to be able to automatically generate buttons, forms, labels by itself. I want it to compile another version of itself, and to test if it worked. I want it to in someway to be able to ask the new application if it works, and if it does to close both and to run the newer variation, then to repeat this process. I guess this is kind of like a self-manifesting application that keeps growing; an AI perhaps. Is this possible?
I have a WinForm 'frmUploadStatus' which has a datagridview filled with 1000 records & 20 columns.And also I hosted in hosting server ms sql server 2005 database which has tables one of its table 'Status' (it has 10 columns).Now I want to upload from WinForm 'frmUploadStatus' to ms sql db.
If I change only the connectionstring in my program for uploading the records, it takes more time for uploading.
Basicly I want to create a server that can read data sent by multiply clients and give feedback to them I have found some tutorials before but its only oneway trafic (Client>>>>Server) and the server crashes as soon as the client is disconnected

I hate to ask this question on this forum, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding it on these online tutorials. Basically, I'm learning about SQL, VB.NET, and how to glue the two together, and I've learned about using SqlCommand.executeScalar() to get the first entry in a table. But that's all it's really good for, right? Or is there something more to the story here?

I know how to select items from an array with LINQ, but what I can't figure out how to do is access a database using an IQueryable. I connected the database to my project, added two classes from the database to the "LINQ to SQL" .dbml file and saved it. In my programming assignment, I am not supposed to create a data source (table thing) to display the data, but update my own interface manually. In order to do it, I was told to instantiate this:

1) read a text file
2) Save the content over to a SQL Server database
3) Use command line arguments to allow user to specify any delimited file
create an SQL Server (express) database (.mdf).
most of the example in the walkthrough make use of the pre made northwind database(.mdf)
i will use the database that i will make to get connected from my application. the connection would client-server and what i have noticed, that this is possible if your database is an SQL version with extension filename of .mdf.
Or if its possible to create this database just using the Visual Studio 2008 Pro(90-day trial)
Using Visual Studio .NET 2008 or 2005, is there a way to automatically generate properties for each column in an SQL Server database table? I am assuming other code-generation software exists that will do this. I know with Visio I can connect to my database and it will generate diagrams by table, this would be similar to that.

In Visual Studio, I am attempting to create a Data Connection to a database in SQL server. Server Mgmt Studio is not running. When I attempt to add a connection in Database Explorer, to the AdventureWorks _Data database, I get the message "This file is in use. Enter an new name or close the file that's open in another program." There are no programs running except VB, except maybe for the SQL Server engine running the background.Please note that I can open and access tables within a database in code
within Visual Studio, I just can't add a connection in Database Explorer.Am I doing something wrong? I've been very frustrated on this issue for a long time

View 2 RepliesIn my VB.Net app, I want to read in a load of addresses from a database and then use word to create address labels on an Avery template L7163 which is then printed to the printer.
However, I have two issues:
1. Before word prints, I'm asked to select the printer etc. not exactly the nice automated application I was looking for.
2. Even though I get a nice printed out doc I was looking for, I also get a nasty looking error at the end which "loops" until I close my app -2147417848: The object invoked has disconnected from its clients. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800010108(RPC_E_DISCONNECTED))
