Importing An Enum Into A Visual Basic Class So That It Becomes Inheritable

Nov 16, 2011

Here is what I have in my file

Option Strict On
Imports MyNameSpace.MyEnum
Public Class AwesomeClass

[Code].....

But since MyEnum isn't defined in the subclass it won't work. I am not very familiar with what these types of things are called, but I think that I am import a type definition of sorts. Since I am Importing, and not defining, it is only available in the first file. Basically, I want to include MyEnum as part of the class but I don't how to do it. I don't want to copy/paste it over, and I don't really want to write Imports ... at the top of all of my subclasses.

VS 2008 Option To Serializing A Non-Inheritable Third-Party API Class?

Jul 19, 2011

this is an interesting problem and to be honest, I'm not sure there's a solution to it. But thought I'd ask the brain-trust here and see what comes up.I'm developing a dll that is loaded and ran within a third-party application. The third-party company provides an API to use that leverages their application's internal objects so that I can automate our processes. It's really pretty slick. They have a class object that represents the internal structure of their supported documents, appropriately titled Database. I would like to serialize the Database class using the ConfigurationConverterBase (to create a TypeConverter for conversion to and from) in conjunction with custom configuration elements and properties to store this information and retrieve when necessary. I've created the converter and all the necessary code for the custom configuration process. And it all works like a charm with one exception... the Database object does not have the Serializeable attribute applied.

Since I don't have control over the API they developed, I cannot simply add it. And since it is sealed, I cannot inherit it. This leaves me with an ugly option of converting the document to a temporary file that is a text-based version of it, then streaming it into memory before creating a binary format that can be saved into the config file. This is an ugly approach, but will get the job done.

Does anyone know how to work around the original issue for a more streamlined approach?

Does Making A Class NotInheritable In .NET Offer The Same (potential) Compiler Optimizations As Sealed In C#?

Jan 11, 2010

I've read that making a class sealed in C# is advisable in high-performance scenarios because it frees the compiler to make certain optimizations (e.g., inlining property getters) that it wouldn't be able to make otherwise. Is the same true for NotInheritable in VB.NET?

Inside The Service Class, Declare A Class Variable Named Started?

May 8, 2012

Create a class named Service. Inside the Service class, declare a class variable named Started. The datatype of this variable is Boolean.Public Class Service Dim started as Boolean End Class Create a class named Server. Inside the Server class, declare a dynamic array that can contain elements of the type Service.(Note: For convenience, both the array and the variable Started can be accessible from a client program that creates an instance of Server and Service respectively)

Create a constructor for the Service class. When the constructor is executed, it will set the value of the class variable Started to True. Create two new classes: WebServer and DatabaseEngine. Both of these classes inherit from the class Service. Inside the Service class, declare a Sub procedure (method) named Terminate. This method should display the following text Service stopping in a message box when executed.This method can be overridden in classes that inherit from Service class.

Inside both the WebServer and DatabaseEngine class, override the method Terminate inherited from their base class Service. Both methods should first call the base class Terminate method. The messages Web server stopping and Database engine stopping should also be displayed in a message box when the Terminate method for the WebServer and DatabaseEngine are called respectively. These messages should only be displayed if the Started variable inherited from their base class is not equal to False.

Inside the Server class, declare a method named Shutdown. This method does not return any value. When executed, it will call the Terminate method for each of the Service instances (if any) in the arrServices
array. You should call the Terminate method within a For Each loop that loops through the elements of the arrServices array.

In the Sub Main method, create an instance of the class Server. Set the size of the arrServices array in
your Server instance to contain 2 elements. Create first a WebServer instance and then a DatabaseEngine
instance into this array. Call the Shutdown method from your Server instance.

Globally Declare A Class?

Jun 1, 2009

I know you can globally declare a structure so every class knows it.But I have a class named "WPNConnection", but I was wondering if you do like.Public WPN as new WPNConnection but so every class in the whole project could access it. It's just annoying having to raise events to get back to the class holding it, or finding the main class and finding it declared there.

OnCreated()
End Sub

But I get a lot of "Class 'xxxxx' must declare a 'Sub New' because its base class 'LINQDataContext' has more than one accessible 'Sub New' that can be called with no arguments." errors

VS 2008 Extending Sealed Classes?

Apr 1, 2010

Briefly, what I'm trying to do is add some methods and properties to the FileInfo class, which is sealed (NotInheritable). As far as I can tell, I have two options to do this.

1) Inherit from FileSystemInfo (the base class for FileInfo) and recreate the methods and properties added by FileInfo (essentially recreating the FileInfo class from scratch)

2) Use extension methods (??) which I just learned about two minutes ago and it being 1am, I'm going to get into this tomorrow

3) Create a wrapper class around a FileInfo object - I think that's the proper term

Ok, so I guess there are 3 options.

A) Why make a class uninheritable

B) Is creating a wrapper class "basically" the same as inheriting from an object, but at least with inheritence you don't need to create any properties and methods other than those you want to modify or add?

Am I correct when I say that a Field is a protected property that can only be accessed by the base class and inherited classes, or is the definition of a field something else?

OOP - Declare Two Datatables And Fill Them Both From A Datatable Returned By A Function In Class

Sep 27, 2010

When I declare two datatables and fill them both from a datatable returned by a function in class, that when i filter the one it seems to filter the other aswell?

For example:

I declare the datatable and initiate my class:

Dim DatatableOne As New Datatable
Dim DatatableTwo As New Datatable

Dim MyClass As New MyClass

I then call the function that returns a datatable and apply it to datatable1 and 2 Then fill two DataGrids with the table:

DatatableOne = MyClass.GetTable()
DatatableTwo = MyClass.GetTable()

DatatableOne.DefaultView.RowFilter = "Name = 'Tom'"

[CODE]...

For some reason i don't understand but both grids end up with the filtered data?
