Jun 14, 2008I need help on improving the performance of a program I wrote some time back. This is the main performance issue of the program below. Basically I need to look through some data that is displayed to a user in a list view and determine if the data is a duplicate of any other data in the list. If it is I need to delete the duplicate before my program continues.The below code does the job just fine, however the list view of data has approximately 30,000 rows of data. Hence looping this list 30,000 to the power 30,000 times makes the program very slow. Note subItem(4) in the data is the "unique" identifier that I later discovered was not so unique....
This was a work around function implemented in the code back when I wrote it (not meant to be permanent). I know that listView is not Ideal to store this much data.how to store the data in a more efficient manner or improve the performance of the Search and Delete [code].....

Sep 27, 2009I am adding line entries in a .ini file. The problem is, I am creating duplicate lines in the file, which I do not want to do. I searched this issue online, and the consensus is to use an array, loop through for duplicates and create a new file. However, being so new at this and teaching myself how to code no less, I am at a dead end. This is not a school project, it is something I am doing for work on my own time. I have all of my code done for the program except for this last step.

Nov 26, 2010i am creating a currency converter in VB 2008. I have a two buttons to choose the currency � or $. When one is clicked the String � or $ is entered into my textbox. I need a backspace button. and i used this code.

tb_result.text = my textbox.
It deletes the last string, but i want it to not delete the Currency($�).

But this code throws a FormatException

Jun 10, 2010I have an ArrayList, and i wish to search it for a specific part of a string. Like the InStr() function.I can only find the WHOLE string. The ArrayList has strings like "This=Is A String", so if i do a check with ArrayList.Contains. It will only search for the whole string, and not something IN the string. Aug 20, 2010Basically, Im running an SQL query to the database, which obviously returns data in their fields. What I want to do is add each record into an ArrayList and split the string based on fields. I.E
CustomerID,Surname,GivenName etc
How do I go about this? so far I have:
alstData.AddRange(sLine.Split(","c))
sLine = the record from the database.
This doesnt seem to work, it just display's the data in one line with no split such as 20205SmithJohn?

Find A Substring In An ArrayList, StringCollection Or List(Of String)
Jun 7, 2010I've got some code that creates a list of AD groups that the user is a member of, with the intention of saying 'if user is a member of GroupX then allow admin access, if not allow basic access'.
I was using a StringCollection to store this list of Groups, and intended to use the Contains method to test for membership of my admin group, but the problem is that this method only compares the full string - but my AD groups values are formatted as cn=GroupX, etc....
I want to be easily able to determine if a particular substring (i.e. 'GroupX') appears in the list of groups. I could always iterate through the groups check each for a substring representing my AD group name, but I'm more interested in finding out if there is a 'better' way.
Clearly there are a number of repositories for the list of Groups, and it appears that Generics (List(Of String)) are more commonly preferred (which I may well implement anyway) but there is no in-built means of checking for a substring using this method either.
I've settled on using a List(Of), and I've borrowed from Dan's code to iterate through the list.

Copy The List Of Principal User To Arraylist To Use Arraylist.indexof?
Dec 1, 2011What I am doing is iterating through all the groups that belong to the top group (Generic reports). Then I take advantage of the GroupPrincipal.GetMembers(True) which will recurse through a given group name. I test to see if the user exits under that group and if true I put the group name in an arraylist.
I use the for each principal in GroupPrincipal.GetMembers to loop through each returned user to see if they exist.
Is there a way to put all the returned users Principal.Name from a given group in GroupPrincipal.GetMembers into an ArrayList? This would allow me to to use Arraylist1.IndexOf to search for user. Which would be much faster then iterating through a returned list using the for each construct.

I need to remove any occurrence of 3 or more duplicate characters on a given string. For example:

Dim output As String = Regex.Replace(strTmp, "????", "")
Debug.Print(output)
The "????" part I guess should be the Regex expression, which I must assume I know almost nothing about.
I don't know if that's the correct syntax. But I need the output to come as:
"1.2 and 33"
VS 2008 Loop Causing Duplicate In List Of String?
Aug 21, 2009Basically what happens is each time it loops through it adds a number to the end of the string, and by the end I should end up with an array full of string in a format like "111 222 333 444 555 666" but I end up getting strings like this "111 111 222 222 333 333". The weird thing is, if I add a message box in every loop it works fine, but obviously I don't want a message box pooping up every time it loops through. What is causing this and how might I fix it

Sep 21, 2010What I need to do is read an ArrayList in My.Settings and add another ArrayList to it. The first think I'm trying to do is load My.Settings.Records into myArrayList. I'm not quite sure on the proper way to do this. I've tried things such as Dim myArrayList As ArrayList = My.Settings.Records, I'm not sure if I need New and I'm not sure if I need .Clone or .CopyTo.

The problem is I keep on getting Object reference not set to an instance of an object error on the AddRange line. My.Settings.Records is definitely an ArrayList and it will sometimes = Nothing. The objects will only ever be strings.
