Jun 29, 2009i have a vb program (VB 2008) and it is currently single user. It has an SQL Server express database, and i would like to know how to make my app multiuser, so it can be used across a network. I know that you need to change some connection strings, except i dont know how to do this.

Sep 22, 2011I've got my self in to a pickle here.I'm trying to do something I used to do in basic? At-least I think you can do this in Basic, you know Qbasic,What I'm trying to do is put 4-8 strings on to one line separated by a comma.Example might be:
writer.writeline (bob1, bob2, bob3, bob4) Out put might look like Test, Test2, Test3, Test4
I'm tried looking in to formatting of writeline/write, but I didn't get any where with it.
Also if this is possible- I would like to be able to read it just like :
reader.readline (Rbob1, Rbob2, Rbob3, Rbob4) If anyone cold just point me in the right direction, I'm sure I can figure it out - If not... Well I will ask another question.

Oct 15, 2007I have a VS 2005 VB.NET Windows forms application that is exhibiting very strange behavior. I can add controls to any of my forms and see them at design time, however when I run the application, it resorts to "old" copies of the forms without the new modifications. Also, the application does not seem to be firiing the correct events - when I put a break on the Form_Load event of my main form - it never fires the event when the application runs. If I change the project settings to start with a new form - it does not recognize the change. Something strange is going on and I am quite frsutrated trying to figure it out.

Nov 4, 2010I have recently created an application where a lot of data is loaded into objects when the application starts up, and other data as it is required. For example if the user requests the catalogue page then it will load all the top level category data into objects of type Category. This will then stay there to be used by other users (who will therefore not have to load this data into objects) and can be altered by admin if they happen to login during the same application instance. I know this is not the most efficient solution, as pointed out below, but it works and the page load, at the moment, is not too long. It is very quick if most of the required data is already loaded into objects. It is also tailored to the business' needs - unlike other techniques such as Linq-to-SQL.

Apr 13, 2011I currently have a simple crystal reports application which generates a crystal report and in the built in viewer provided by VS2005. There is a drop down where you can select options to change the criteria of the report. I wish to convert this app to a windows executable which will take all those select options and generates pdfs based on the crystal report. the executable will be triggered by windows task scheduler...or maybe command line app?
Obviously this will be somewhat of a re-write. What would be the best way to start this as? a crystal report application or a windows application.

I have noticed that there exists a specific option that needs to be enabled for the machine to hibernate correctly and that is found in Control Panel--> Power Options --> Hibernate Tab (if this option is not checked then the machine goes into stand by mode rather than hibernate) Is there a way to programmatically check the status of the "Enable Hibernation" check box and check/uncheck it?

Apr 13, 2012If I create a user level application setting and bind it to a text box on a form, then type something in the textbox, the value is automatically saved and when the application is launched again the value appears in the textbox. This doesn't happen when I scope the setting as application.
Why are application scoped settings not saved automatically like user scoped settings are?
If this is by design, how can I manually save these settings and load them at runtime?

Aug 4, 2009I'm handling the Application.UnhandledException event in a WinForms app and need to log exceptions caught there. My app.config is set up to log exceptions to a FileLog and an EventLog.The problem is that when running as a non-admin user, the EventLog cannot be written to because of a SecurityException - I get the message "The source was not found, but some or all event logs could not be searched."I understand why - the user does not have permission to create the EventLog source, but the question is how should this source be created? As I see it, I could either:
1) Create the EventLog source with my installer, as this is running as admin. How to do this?
2) Create from within my app, by somehow elevating permissions? But this would give the UAC prompt on Vista.

Create A Writing Speed Test Application?
Mar 12, 2012I'd like to create a simple application to determine the writing speed. In this application I want to view a line of text (may be more than one line) to the user to write it. And I want to select (higlight) the character the user pressed in my line and to move like a cursor to the next character (or to put underline under the current charater). How can I do that? and what is the object or component i must use to insert the text. It uses a tablet connected to the pc to write the signature on the screen and then save it as a bitmap for later retrieval.The only issue i am having right now is that if you write on the tablet too fast, the signature gets broken up alot, any way to quicken the paint process in the code so that I can get a smoother signature?

Writing A Small Application That Downloads Some Files Over Ftp?
Jun 28, 2010I'm writing a small application that downloads some files over ftp, the incoming directory is monitored by FileSystemWatcher_Created, on creation I want to extract some text from the file and call another application with the text as parameters the problem I have is the FileSystemWatcher_Created procedure is triggered before the file has finished downloading, I could download it elsewhere and move into the monitored directory but some of the files may be quite large and Im wondering if there is an efficient way of waiting until the file is ready? along the same lines what is the best way to queue the tasks as there can be many files coming it at one time, I've looked at threading but would that be suitable for such a task as there will still be a bottleneck at the application called by FileSystemWatcher_Created ?
