Windows And Web Application - Code Written In VB 2005 Supports In VB 2008 ?
Mar 29, 2009
I have been developing windows and web application using Visual Basic 2005 for a long time. Now i want to change from Visual Basic 2005 to Visual Basic 2008. I would like to know what ever projects i have done in visual basic 2005 will works in Visual Basic 2008. Will the existing code in visual basic 2005 supports Visual Basic 2008 or do i need lot of modification. I haven't used VB 2008 but i hear that most of the code which written in visual basic 2005 supports visual basic 2008. What are the things i need to take care when working the existing projects in visual basic 2008.

I have a program written in VB 2005, the computer used to write the code was running in Windows XP and 32 bit Pentium D. Now, my boss want to buy a new computer to run the program, and he wants the one that comes with Windows 7, 64 bit. Can my program run in the new computer without any problem? Or, is there anything that I need to change for it to run there?

I hope someone can help with a very frustrating problem I'm trying to solve in one of our Windows Forms apps written in Visual Basic 2005 and running on Windows XP SP3.
The app is essentially quite simple in concept but there is lots of code and data, however, the problem does show itself consistently. The app does the following:
1) Startup
2) Choose Access database to load data from
3) Load the data into memory as a series of collections of objects
4) Do lots of number crunching
5) Fails when entering a particular sub for the first time with an Access Violation Exception
The most difficult aspect of this problem is it only shows itself when compiled in Release mode. It doesn't show itself when running in Debug mode either within Visual Studio or running outside Visual Studio. I assume this is due to the extra 'padding' in a debug exe which is masking the effect of bad code causing the error. The problem is made worse in that the 'standard' build target machine where the problem shows itself only has a copy of Visual Basic 2005 Express so as a result I have been debugging the app at runtime using WinDbg which is tricky but sort of fun (for a nerd!).
I have read / researched extensively on the internet for solutions and as a result have tried the following but all without success:
a) checked for any badly declared DLLs (p/invoke) but the app doesn't use a single one.
b) checked for any COM references / interop. There were two references which were rarely used so I removed them and commented out the code that referenced them but the exception was still raised.
c) I've tried adding my own trace code in the problem area and the line prior to calling the Sub runs but the first line of the Sub never executes due to the Access Violation exception being raised.
d) I have used WinDbg to set breakpoints around the problem area at runtime which has confirmed 'c' above that the sub never executes.
e) I have used WinDbg to double check the addresses of the parameters passed into the Sub are correct as they seem to correctly point to the same address as the local / module level variable that was passed in.
f) I have checked all of the extensive data loading is not eg leaving DataReader objects open etc.
g) I have tried compiling the code in VS 2008 on a different machine targeting the 2.0 framework but the bug still showed itself.

I have 5 different applications that I have written for my business, they are all interfaces for a point of sale system. I TCP/IP interface handling part of the application is rock solid, problem is that occationally I will come across a small issue, such as a memory leak that I came across a few weeks ago. After I fixed it, I had to then fix said leak in 5 different projects as they all use the same interface base code. Now, if things were different, say a function that all my applications used I would just write it into a class in a dll and have all my applications use the function from that class. Problem is however, using a parent/child explanation unlike my example here where I have interface 1 - 5 as my parents using common.dll as a common child. I need to have InterfaceParent using 5 different children with different attributes. That being said, there are a few stipulations, depending on the customer I may only need to install interface 1 and 3, or 2 and 5, or 1,3 and 4.

I currently have a simple crystal reports application which generates a crystal report and in the built in viewer provided by VS2005. There is a drop down where you can select options to change the criteria of the report. I wish to convert this app to a windows executable which will take all those select options and generates pdfs based on the crystal report. the executable will be triggered by windows task scheduler...or maybe command line app?
Obviously this will be somewhat of a re-write. What would be the best way to start this as? a crystal report application or a windows application.

I am trying to run simple application (e.g. generated from template by VS.NET 2010) on IIS6. I changed it to run with .NET 4.0 (its application pool) and checked with regiis (this pool has 4.0). I also changed all possible httpHandlers (svc etc), to run with NET4.0. All possible rights are checked (i think so). Almost every request results in "Server Application Unavailable" (sometimes it is empty page with -2146232576 (0x80131700) value) and "...Please review this log entry to discover what caused this error to occur." but EventViewer and IIS Log are empty.

I have come across to develop an application for Windows 7.My program has one setting file and one LogFiles folder under the same folder as EXE. User will change some setting from Program and the values will update in this file. If there is an error, error detail will log in Logfiles/ todaydate.txt file.(Later I discovered/learnt that I should not edit/write the files to Program Files/sub folders.)So, now I'm trying to move these two files to another location. After searching a few on Net and I got the following result.[code]When I make Setup project for my application, I have to put the Setting file under one of these location. And what I found was, I only has a choice of "User's Application Data Folder" which is equivalent to My.Computer.FileSystem.SpecialDirectories.CurrentUserApplicationData.If i put Setting.ini file under this folder in Setup project, it gave me an warning of "File 'Setting.ini' should not be installed into a User's Profile folder because it may not be available to all users."

I have created a Windows Application using VB dot Net. It has many Forms. The user shall be able to open many forms at a time. I want to provide a "Window" menu functionality to the existing application. Whenever any form is opened, the menu should add the open-form and when it is closed, it must be removed from the Window menu. The functionality should be similar to any Word file's Window functionality.
Active window must be tick marked.

We're starting to evaluate VS 2010, but right now I'm trying to do a simple Windows application in Visual Studio 2005 on an XP box.
Eventually, this will become a web service, but I want to test the XSLT file I am using in a simple application first.
Here is the XSLT file:
CODE:
The file is added to my project, XMLTest.
The code that generates and parses the file to change to a text file is as follows:
CODE:
A sample output XML file is as follows:
CODE:
When I run the VB code to input and transform the XML output I get a filenotfoundexception error that I can not figure out, because where it is expecting the XSLT file doesn't seem to make any sense.
If it were going to always be hosted on my machine, I'd use an absolute path, but it's not going to be, and I'm going to be switching to a Windows 7 x64 box after lunch anyway.
