Error: BC30577: 'AddressOf' Operand Must Be The Name Of A Method

I'm trying to create an update form whereby if the user leaves the textbox (actionsTextBox) blank, then a default value of "no data entered" will be automatically bound to the textbox prior to updating the sql record. I keep getting this error: Compilation Error: Description: An error occurred during the compilation of a resource required to service this request. Please review the following specific error details and modify your source code appropriately. Compiler Error Message: BC30577: 'AddressOf' operand must be the name of a method (without parentheses). I'm trying to add a computed column to a datatable that references another column in the datatable. Sometimes the computed column has a mathematical operation applied to it, but in this case I'm just referencing the original column. The code looks like the following:
ReportData.Columns.Add("1_1_US", _
GetType(Single), _
"1_1")
The code isn't actually hard coded as shown above - there are functions that return the values for the first and third parameters - but I checked those and they are returning the expected values and not generating any errors themselves.
The error is thrown when the .Add method is called, and the error states "Syntax error: Missing operand after '_1' operator." It seems to me that it doesn't like the column name, which I suppose I could change and just workaround it at the presentation level. Still, I'm curious. Is this a bug in the .net framework or something? It doesn't mind "1_1" as a column name in the datatable, so why is it having a problem with it in the expression statement?

I have a method which requires a parameter to be passed in. I would like to use the Addhandler to call the method through a dynamically created button control's click event.
When I include () in the AddressOf, VS complains: 'AddressOf' operand must be the name of a method (without parentheses).
When I exclude the brackets, VS complains: Method '...' does not have a signature compatible with delegate...

This is a mix of C# and VB.Net. I have a C# class with with 2 delegates:
public delegate string GetSettingDelegate(string key);
public event GetSettingDelegate GetSettingEvent;
public delegate void SetSettingDelegate(string key, string value);
public event SetSettingDelegate SetSettingEvent;
In a VB class I add handlers to the event:
AddHandler _gisCtrl.SetSettingEvent, AddressOf SetSetting
AddHandler _gisCtrl.GetSettingEvent, AddressOf GetSetting
When I try and remove the handlers:
RemoveHandler _gisCtrl.SetSettingEvent, AddressOf SetSetting
RemoveHandler _gisCtrl.GetSettingEvent, AddressOf GetSetting
SetSetting is OK but GetSetting throws a warning:
The AddressOf expression has no effect in this context because the method arguments to AddressOf requires a relaxed conversation to the delagate type of the event.
Here are the methods
[Code] .....
How to fix this and why it is thrown in the first place? The 2 delegates/events/methods look similar enough that I don't know why one is OK and one throws a warning.

I faced an error when upgrading VB6 code to VB.NET. The error occurs at AddressOf WindowProc
AddressOf expression cannot be converted to 'Integer' because 'Integer' is not a delegate type
My declaration for SetWindowLong is:
Declare Function SetWindowLong Lib "user32" Alias "SetWindowLongA"(
ByVal hWnd As Integer,
ByVal nIndex As Integer,[code]....
What is the reason for the error I get?

Why does my the declaration of my string in the code result in the following error? Is there a workaround?
Code:
<script runat="server">
Protected Sub form1_Load(sender As Object, e As System.EventArgs)
Dim x As String = "</script>"
[code]....
Error: Statement cannot appear within a method body. End of method assumed.
Note: The following page did not fix my issue and instead resulted in the string </script> being output in my page. ( VB.NET hates </script> tag in string literal )

I have a number of functions that, for one reason or another, return data type object.If I try and use the + operand (or indeed any arithmetic operator) on types object the compiler throws a wobbly.
How do I tell if a given object supports the "+" operator and, if it does, invoke that "+" operator?
