Exe Closes System.IO.StreamReader Kills Program?
Apr 24, 2011
Ok, So I am making a front-end for a program, and it runs the exe with command line arguments. One of those arguments is creating a log file that tells me who the winner is. Currently I have code that runs the app, tell VB when it exits and then does another event. When testing with message box as the other event, works fine.
When running the System.IO.Streamreader the app just closes down on its own and there are no errors shown.

I have a device (a few actually) that connects via USB to a PC. From here it acts like a basic storage device using FAT32 as the file system. The other thing is that it won't accept drive names (C:, E:, G: etc) to it so instead you need to use its Volume GUID to connect. I have retrieved this painlessley through MountVol.exe but thats where the difficulties ended.I am not trying to access the file system through VB.NET/C#.net (either will be fine - fluent in both ;) ). In Windows Explorer I can easily visit '\?Volume{71E4C2C7-E511-4B2A-BF5C-569B2B25784E}apic' to access the device and its files. I can also use CMD and the Dir command to go through the files. Just .NET cant seem to cope. I understand the GUID changes on each PC and I am OK with this as I can use MountVol to get the GUID and run the console app with command arguments as it will always be a human initiating the command.
I have tried manually entering the path via Console.ReadKeys but this also fails to even see the directory above and any of the files inside one being 'dev' without an extention. I can use System.IO operations without extensions on "normal" drives (ie those
with letters) so I know it's not the extension causing problems. I did a Try/Catch with a StreamReader pointing to the file to see what was spurted out:
System.ArgumentException: Illegal characters in path.
at System.Security.Permissions.FileIOPermission.HasIllegalCharacters(String[]
str)

I made my own advanced networking system which uses System.IO.Streamwriter and Streamreader but offline. I would like to let this use a directory online, I have a webhost available for that, now how do I say to the program it has to look at a specific map with all the users information?
I now have already this into my login form:
Private Sub btnLogin_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnLogin.Click
On Error GoTo A
[CODE]...
Just curious if I can let my network grow out international instead of pc. Also I have a second question. I made a create account page which is supposted to make a text file with the txtUserName and txtPassword inputs, but it does create the file, but doesnt write any lines into it.
Code here:
Private Sub btnCreate_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnCreate.Click
Dim UserGenerator As System.IO.StreamWriter

I'm looking for a more elegant way to work around a problem I have
Code:
Private Sub MnuCheckForUpdates_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MnuCheckForUpdates.Click
Dim startInfo As New ProcessStartInfo(mStartUpPath & "" & "Updater.exe")
Process.Start(startInfo)
End Sub
As you can see Im calling my updater program, but I want some code to run only after the Updater has closed. My work around was to:
A - Initially load the updater.
B Start a time
C Check if the updater is still running.
D If its not call the routine in the timer event.
But this is not elegant is there another way around this, I can call events in the updater but I dont think I can join them in someway to ProcessStartInfo Class .

I have made a program that has an intro screen, moving onto an activity select screen which acts as the main interface to get around the program. After creating the program and installing it on my computer, when I close the program from the activity select screen, using the "X" at the top right corner, the program continues to run under "processes" in the task manager. If I close the program from the intro screen though, it will close everything, including the processes. Is there anyway I can get the same to happen with the game select screen? I can make it work by putting my own "End" button on the form, but id prefer to be able to do it with forms own close button.

I'm working on program that has two forms. The main form is called 'frmMain'. Second form is called 'FrmHistory'. In the History form, you can check a number of combo boxes to set settings for a grid.
This works. Now, when I close the FrmHistory form and then open it again, I have it so those combo boxes (Settings) are how I left them. This works. I do so via this.

Does anybody know if it's possible to make your program 'self-destruct' (delete itself) when it closes? I know this sounds like malware, but it's not. What happens is the user clicks 'install', the application copies itself to another directory, then the application starts the new copied file, with an argument that begins the installation, kills itself, and then the copied application restarts and then it's done. But I can't get rid of the original executable.

how you would go about saving information(username, password, security questions) in a notepad, so it can be retrieved after a program closes. i'm making a log in program in my class, but we haven't done this, so when the program closes, everything is gone. rather annoying, to have to make a accounts each time i'm testing it.

I have a problem with a streamreader in visual basic 2008.I am updating a database from text files on an ftp server. The streamreader works fine until the file is more than 100,000 bytes long.It reads until it reaches this point and then just ends. No error message, it just reads to this point which happens to be 2 fields out of 6 in the database stream. My question is - does the streamreader have a limit? And if so what is a workaround?
Dim connString As String = "Data Source=" & pDataBase
conn = New SqlCeConnection(connString)
Dim strQuery As String = ""[code]......

I'm writing a program that basically loads an entire text file into a streamreader variable, then reads this variable line by line and parses and writes a line into a new text file. I'm VERY new and my knowledge is mostly self-taught, but I can't seem to get out of this one. It works for smaller files, but it appears to reach a limit in characters at some point because in a file of 900 lines, it stops writing about halfway through 800 and there are no errors, the program actually completes and the message box pops up.
There are a few things with this code I already know I should fix, such as creating the new text file name, it's messy, I just don't know how.
Private Sub btnProcess_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnProcess.Click
Dim IndexValues As String()

I have a VB program that displays a PDF file. When the program is closed it takes 30 seconds or so before AcroRd32 process releases the PDF file. In certain circumstances if the program is restarted with in this period, the PDF file does not display. The specific circumstances is that I have a second program (re)starting the program that displays the PDF file.
a) Make the PDF file be immediately released when my program closes
b) When the PDF file is loaded test that it properly loaded so that it can be reloaded if necessary.

I just moved from VS2005 to 2008. All seemed fine until I started playing with locally cached data sources. After that I started getting this problem and now I get it even when starting a new project. I start a new project and debug, Form1 shows and all is well. If I add a combobox to the form and debug the form immediately closes. It doesn't seem to do it for other controls.
