Get Windows To Open The Credentials Dialog - Network Folder Security
Jun 2, 2009
I have a treeview control which is being used to browse various folder on the users system drive. It can also be set up to connect network folders using UNC paths e.g "serverfiles". At the moment I'm getting a list of Directories by using My.Computer.FileSystem.GetDirectories however this obviously fails when the folder is password protected.
Is there a way that I can get Windows to open the credentials dialog as you would see in Windows Explorer and deal with the credentials side so then the user name & password is cached as well?

I have a program written in VB.net 2003 that are folks run under alternate credentials. Inside the app there is an option to open a UNC path to a network share. We were running Windows XP SP3 and IE6. The code is simple just a call to the explorer.exe with /root,\UNCPath. After installing IE 8 onto the machine this no longer works. Best I can tell the code is still working but now being executed in non interactive mode so nothing opens up. You can however see a new spawned explorer.exe running under the system account for each attempt at opening a UNC Path. Any ideas what IE8 could have done to cause this behavior?

I need to open a folder on a remote server with different credentials in a window (explorer.exe).I managed to do it with no credentials (my credentials), but when I do it with another username and another password than mine, it opens a prompt to enter a username and a password, and it says "access denied".
In the access log on the remote desktop, it says that I tried to connect with my own username, and not the other username I entered. So, the process obviously did not work.

I am doing setup project in VS 2008. I used custom action to select file from local drives. On the button click of custom action form, I am launching Open file dialog as ofdGetNetPath.ShowDialog When I run the setup on Vista, and click the button to open the openFileDialog, it hanged, form becomes non responsive and I have to cancel the setup.
on debugging I got following error "Current thread must be set to single thread apartment (STA) mode before OLE calls can be made. Ensure that your main function has STAThreadAttribute marked in it. This exception is only raised if a debugger is attached to the process."
so I used the following code:
Dim ofdThread As Thread ofdThread = New Thread(New ThreadStart(AddressOf ShowOpenFileDialog)) ofdThread.SetApartmentState(ApartmentState.STA) ofdThread.Start() Private Sub ShowOpenFileDialog() Me.ofdGetNetPath.ShowDialog() End Sub
now on button click, OpenFileDialog is shown but it is not showing Mapped drive or Network location... what should I need to do to show the mapped drive or network locations?

I'm looking for a straightforward means of pulling all the users who have access to a folder with vb.net.All I need is the user name, not the type of access they have.

When I try to call a [Java] web service from .NET, I am getting what appears to be a security credentials issue. CWWSS5509E: A security token whose type is [http://docs.oasis-open.org/wss/2004/01/oasis-200401-wss-username-token-profile-1.0#UsernameToken] is required. Is it even picking up the credentials that I am trying to pass? At this point, I just want to make contact with the web service and get access. In my example, ServiceReference1 is a generated Web proxy class.
Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click
Dim myLocateProfileBySourceSystemId As New ServiceReference1.locateProfileBySourceSystemId

We don't want to get the password, we only want to store the user credentials so when they do work on the application we can apply their usernameto each operation and when they are done with an operation and do a digital signature by scanning their badge we want to compare the user's credentials with the stored credentials to ensure the user has logged in and is the current user.1. User 1 logs into the program using their username/password for windows.5

I am using Process.Start(fileName) to let Windows open certain files outside of my application with their 'default application'.If "fileName" for example is a ".txt" file, it opens the file in Notepad. If it is a folder, it opens windows explorer with that folder selected. This all seems to work well, except when the user enters a file that has no application 'linked' to it.(a file that has no file associations)I have wrapped the Process. Start() in a Try/Catch block so that any errors are caught and displayed. When I now open a file without any file associations (windows does not know with which application to open it) it tells me that it cannot find any application to open it with. (The exact error is in dutch so I don't think that's going to be much help here, but I think it's clear what's happening, no?)What I would like to happen in this case is that the windows "Open With" dialog comes up, asking the user to select an application to open the file with. Now it just displays the error message and continues, making it impossible for the user to open the file unless he browses to the file manually and sets up the file association, something many users probably don't know how to do.

I'm sure most people on here have opened an OpenFileDialog or SaveFileDialog and set the SelectedPath property to point to some directory...
Has anyone done this on a Windows 7 machine and been able to point the thing to a Library? If so, what do you set it to?

Dim LogonCred as net.credential= New Net.Credential(userid, password, domain)
Dim DestUri as Uri=New Uri(file://192.168.86.1/c$/Program Files/Test/Test.xml)
My.Computer.Network.UploadFile("d:Test.xml",DestURI,LogonCred,False,3500)
This passes credentials of my local machine (which is not part of the domain) instead of passing the LogonCred. Is this function just broken? Or is it my code?

I am trying to build a simple AutoUpdate application using VB.NET. It was quite simple. That is, I put the newest ZIP file in my hosting site, and then download it using WebClient.DownloadFileAsync. After it get downloaded, I extract it using [URL]
But each time I run the unzip.exe using Process.start, Windows 7 always show Open File Security.
Is it possible for VB.NET to bypass such security restriction?
Btw, this is my code of using WebClient.DownloadFileAsync, in case any one google about it and landed on this page :
Public Class AutoUpdate
Dim installationFolder As String = "C:Program Filesxyzabc"
Dim updateFileNameTarget As String
Private Sub btnStartUpdte_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnStartUpdte.Click

I have an assignment due this week in which I have to make a app that has 5 buttons and a picture box. When each button is clicked it has to show the corresponding picture in the picture box, the fifth button closes the app.
I have the whole form set up the way it should be, but I have no idea how to write the code to make the buttons display the images and close the app.I have the images in a folder within the project folders.
I have yet to be able to find one, the one I found should how to do it using a file opener dialog and a folder browser dialog but that is not what I think my prof wants us to do, as that is more for a picture viewer app that lets the user choose the file of the image they want ot view.
All i want is for the buttons to be linked to specific photos that are part of the application itself and have them open.

Is there anyway to disable the vb.net (2008) express popup for converting older projects as well as the security warning to browse the project? I'm fairly new to vb.net so of course I download lots of examples to learn off of and it is BEYOND annoying to have to convert every demo and then click ok to browse the code.

I'm programming a mass emailer for my newsletter using Outlook.Everything is working great except for two security dialog boxes...The first is how long I should give my application and the second is "if I should let my program send out the email".I do really understand this is perfect security but I need to have Outlook trust my application. These newsletters are going to 1000 people and this would be really tedious if I had to click each dialog box.
