View 3 RepliesI have a situation that I just can't seem to sort out in my head. What I have is a string that I would like to compare with another. Simple until I add the variable conditions to this task.
What I have is a string that looks like "t-EL" , "t-A" , "t-D" , "t-G" , "t-B" , or "t-EH" now the trouble both the strings could have characters leading these of following these. In every case there will be at lease One number after these ie "t-A0" or "t-A2" but could have a double digit number like "t-A13". Leading these strings could contain "!" or "#". In every case I'm only concerned with the character after the "-" but the trouble is some times I need to differentiate between the "EH" and "EL". I could find the location of the "-" and extract the next character and if it is "E" then the next two characters. Can we find a better way?

The way the code is laid out, I have to do this in one line. I can't check the first condition on one line and the second on another.I've tried separating the data out with parantheses, but it's producing the same results.

I have a connection string set up and a data reader.I have two textboxes on my form for users to type in. One textbox (txtLogin) is a user name and the other textbox is a password (txtPwd). I'm trying to compare what a user types into those two boxes to a table in a vfp database. The table I'm trying to compare to is open about 99% of the time so I need to be able to read from it in some type of "shared" mode.

I have a tblVersion that contains the versions of my application:
VersionID Version
VersionID is a bigint primary key, version is a ntext column that holds the current version... I want to be able to pick the row that has the highest version number, but version could be in this format:
MyApplication 1.0.1
If I try to convert that to a int32 it will throw an exception obviously. I would like to know if some of you have a idea how to solve this issue. I could of course make sure the column will only contain numeric values but this gives a little more flexibility.

In other words, I have a 2- forms, the first form is where the enduser places a few record requirements along with 4-digit number followed by the submission of a registration. After the registraions is submited, I have it coded to where the registration gets saved along with the 4-digit number into the database followed by a second form appearing. Ok, here comes the problem: When the user exits the applaication and then restarts the application again, the first form apears although it is not necessary since the enduser had already registered.
So, how do I or what kind of comparison statement can I create that will let visual basics or the first form know that the registration was completed and force the second form to appear instead or first?I would liked to makes some type of comparison with the 4-digit number thats in located in the SQL database.

I have no problem with the feed itself, but my problem is how can I mark certain items as 'read'? The only thing I can thing of is to read the feed into a database. In this database, I add a column for 'read' which I update when the user has read the article. My query is i want to save record from an excel sheet to my Database Table.
But i dont want to insert the Excel sheet as a whole rather i want to insert the record in my database table Row wise.Inserting the records is not the only thing but my major issue is i want to check and compare the Primary Key column of my Table with the Column in my Excel.
Suppose Table1 is my Sql Database Table,and RegistrationNo is the Primary Key Column.Similarly there is also a column of Registration Number in my Excel Sheet.
Now before inserting each record the RegistrationNo column should be compared.If the a registrationNo in the excel sheet say RegistrationNo 112 is already present in the table then it should not Insert the record and if its not present then it should insert.
Also the other issue is the number of columns in my Database table are more than the number of columns in my excel Sheet.So the columns that are not present in the excel sheet should be set to NULL while inserting the record in the Table.

I am building VB.NET application that takes data from text files that are exported from a legacy DOS program. These are written to a datatable and displayed in a datagridview. Right now my code simply loops through the datagridview and inserts the data into the database (SQL Server). There is a requirement now that the client number must be checked before the insert to see if it exists in the database. If it does, then the value of one field (tax rate) is checked against the value of the field in the datagridview. If there is a difference, then the rate is to be updated in the database and the data that was in the database is to be written to a history table for audit purposes. If the client number is not there, then we are to do the insert (which is already written). I want to know what is the most elegant and efficient solution for this problem.
I need to compare what is in the database table with what is in the datagridview, update the history table for records that exist, and then insert new records.

He specifically requested that I should do this using LINQ to compare the input to a table in an Access database. I don't really know why he imposed these restrictions, but who am I to judge? I use a timer to compare these every second and display the result, but as the current time approaches the time I set, the result changes from 1 to -1, but never 0, which means these two are never equal. I'm suspecting the Datetime structure contains milliseconds?

I am getting an error at the "Do While DMReader02.Read = True" line: "Invalid attempt to call Read when reader is closed." Why would the reader be closed at this point if I am using different DataReaders in the two loops?
