I am trying to write a fairly basic program that uses a database of English words and their German equivalentsto be a sort of quiz. In the database i have three collums, ID, English and German. I want to use a random number to select the word, show the english word and then ask for the german - it is then checked against the database value to see if it has been done correctly.

I was just wondering how to extract or parse any particual tags (whichever I specify) from webpages. I know how to extract text and links from webpages, but I tried to use the same method from the following code for div tags, title tags etcetera and it doesn't seem to work:

Here is what I did.
1. Went to data source window and clicked "add new data connection"
2. Choose Data Base clicked next
3. Clicked Create Typed UserInformation as the name
4. Next.... Under Data set name I typed UserInformation again
Does naming the database and the data set the same cause problems?
5. Created New Table called users for UserInformation Database.
6. I added the following Columns: FirstName, LastName, Address, and Phone
7. Edited the table to add a couple of people. Tom/Franks/108 blah street/5555555 and Bill/West/109 blah street/5555555.
8. I also reconfigured the data connection in the data source window to show the users table.
I have four labels on my form, a text box, and a button.
I want to be able to search the database by last name for what the user typed into the textbox when they click the button.
I know this is probably easy for all of you but I am still trying to get used to using databases.
I wrote a function that returns the number in a particular field, my issue at the moment is how to update that field before i return the previous value i collected from the field. i am seeking any guidance available. Enclosed is the function i wrote.

Here is an image of my table data and design I am trying to read some values from a database using the oledb dataset however when I run the sql command and get down to outputting the value I am greeted with the following error: "IndexOutOfRangeException: There is no row at position 0.". Yet when I run the very same sql command in access I get back the data I wanted.When I am running the above code, no errors are produced until I get down to the last writeline where I want to output my data.
I Have two listboxes , Listbox1 and Listbox 2 , I want to select some items from listbox1 to listbox2 , with those selected items in listboxe2 I want it to extract specific data concerns to those selected item from Microsoft Access and later.I want to use only those specific extracted data to calculated some mathematical function.

I mean, technically it should be possible for me to get the information (how else does the website get it) provided it is not secured (even when using the correct login details). I am sure the website communicates with a database somewhere. Does that mean I could theoretically also communicate with the database (probably: read from it only, not write) for example by executing queries?If that is possible, how do I figure out which queries to use for the different pieces of information? I'm a little brain dead at the moment and was wondering if someone could help me out with some code.I am pretty new to using databases in vb and what I want to do is to match a variable with a value in a database field and when it finds it, it will store the row count into another variable. I know I have to use a counting loop, I'm not sure how to compare the variable to the value in the database.[code]

I am using Forms Based Authentication I have extended the Forms Authentication Tables creating a custom table called Profile_Contact that holds the user's GUID, username, email address, and other information. I have a question about storing formulas on a database and bringing them back in as a string. I want to have the user enter in a width and that number will be passed to intWidth. Lets say a user enters 8 into txtWidth, strRange will = "Less Than 10" and in the database I will have a Width_Range column with "Less Than 10" and a corresponding Equation column to go with it. If I have a formula such as (1800 * 1.8) saved in that database column, the code I have works and does the calculation.

I just started using VS2010. I am very familiar with Visual Basic 6 and was very comfortable with it.I was able to take a variable and assign a database field to iwithout using data binding. I can't seem to figure out how to do thatin VS2010 What I am trying to do is have the use enter a password to gain access to the program. The password is stored in a database so that the user/owner can change this password to suit their preference.

I can select any other item from the table without the error. "sender" has the same properties as "receiver" in the SQL table.
A stored procedure returns data about a user record including a nullable datetime column for their last login date. Which one is the better choice in dealing with the possibility for NULL values when trying to assign a .Net date variable?

Edit #2: I have noticed that the TryParse method does not play nice when trying to assign to a Nullable type.
i am trying to write a program which reads a data from the database and perform some calculations. what i am intending to do is when a user selects an item from a listbox and clicks the submit button the program, calls a function to calculate using the value stored in the database and display the result in a textbox.the problem is i cant store the data retrieved from the database into a variable so that the calculations can be done. i am using vb and microsoft sql server.can anyone tell me how do i store the data retrieved by the query into a variable.

View 22 RepliesI have a little problem regarding the use of DBNull, NULL etc. in VB.net in combination with SQL Server 2k.
More specifically, I want to do something along the lines of this:If x = 0 Then
x = DBNull.Value where x is declared by Dim x as Object. I would rather use Double, but I can't assign DBNull.Value to this, and using Object works quite well, too. But every time I hit this condition, I get an exception: A first chance exception of type 'System.InvalidCastException' occurred in Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll This is not a major show-stopper, since the database value I write x to in the next step, is NULL by default - most of the time! So I need the ability to write NULL to it. If that was not the case, I would have been able to work around this by catching exceptions, I think - but sadly, this isn't really of use then.

I've been having problems extracting the value of a Regex in a String. I have a string with several regex expressions and I need to get the value of each expression's match. The thing is though, it's not returning the last match correctly. For example:
Regex Pattern: I play (S+.*?) and (S+.*?)
String: I play the guitar and the bass The program is returning the value of the first expression as "the guitar" but it's returning the value of the second expression as "the" instead of "the bass".
I have a string that looks like this:
var expression = @"Args("token1") + Args("token2")";
I want to retrieve a collection of strings that are enclosed in Args("") in the expression.
How would I do this in C# or VB.NET?
