View 1 RepliesI am looking for help on how to speed up VB.NET (or C#) screen refresh speed. Specifically I need to update many controls and then refresh them on the screen all at once.I am in charge of writing a .NET interface for an older legacy program. Because this needs to run on slow legacy machines I did a performance test and discovered the screen refresh speeds of VB6 is faster then .NET. In VB6 there is barely a flicker as controls change across the entire form all at once. In VB.NET you can see controls change moving across the form like a wave. I must be doing something wrong...
To do a head to head comparison I put together equivalent VB6 and VB.NET programs, each with a maximized form and 48 labels. Clicking on any label changes the background color of all the labels on the form. To really see the problem it is best to try the following code on a slower machine (1GHz etc.)
In VB6 create a project MyProject and add a form MyForm with the following properties
Caption = "Screen Refresh test VB6"
BackColor = Black
WindowState = Maximized
On that form add a label MyLabel with the following properties:
Index = 0
Caption = "Hello World"
BackColor = Cyan
In the form add the following code:

I have a windows form that contains a panel (Hosting panel for X number of panels). The hosting panel AutoScroll property is set to true.I need to create X number of a panels each will have (Lable and three Radio buttons) at run time. The panel controls must be aligned.So I created a loop in my form load event to add the X number of the panels on the form. I used the location X and Y to position the controls on the form. The loop work fine until it reach the point where the controls host panel needs to enable Auto Scrolling which cause the added panels to be shifted to right. The shifting happened once the host panel auto scroll becomes enabled.

When i run my program and then click on the 2nd btn on the top-right corner to expand to fit my screen, i find that my control are not auto align to the expand. It also has the same problem when i run my program on other monitor of different size. Is there a way to make the controls auto align?

In my program, I created a list of a class that contains 5 picture boxes, a button, a label, an identifier, and some other stuff. I've got roughly 65 of these in this list. I'd be stupid to hard code all that in. The identifier is a 2nd way of identifying which specific location I'm working on.
Anways, all this is created at compile time. Works perfectly fine.
I then manually start a background worker that pings a collection of components. Based off the success of those pings, the picture boxes are enabled or disabled. Basically a proactive way to see if a collection of devices over multiple locations are actually working.
It's the background worker that fails because of thread-safe calls.

I have a windows form which to summarize lets the user open a file containing 32 bit hashes, then search for one of them. The hash is then converted to its string representation. The application is giving the results I would expect but I'd like to make it execute faster than it does now; some files can be pretty big > 100 MB.
I'm doing the file read using a BackgroundWorker object to display progress updates and ensure that the UI is available during the process. But for that i need to add a System.Threading.Sleep(1) instruction in the loop; otherwise the application freezes with big files. And System.Threading.Sleep(1) creates a noticeable lag. Any suggestions on how to make searches fast without freezing the UI? Getting speeds comparable to hex editor programs for example.
What is the fastest way to receive TCP (with 'read') and update a form with the data?
A background polling thread seems to messy.
But is there a TCP receive/read event that can be added to the form, so that the form can pick up the incoming data to display it?
Showing of my forms is somewhat slow, I am thinking of loading them when the app is started but I am worried it will take too much memory. What other means can I do to make the showing of the form faster?

I am currently making a VB.Net game for my end of the project, but I have found myself in a deadlock. I was wondering how to make labels move up and down in my panel by themselves at a set speed. View 6 RepliesDoes anyone know of anyway that it would be possible to speed up the process of loading forms.With VB6, forms (simple ones) was extremely fast but with VB.net, the initial loading of a form (even the simplest one) takes very long. Although it gets better once it's loaded once and the reloaded the next time (almost instanttaneous), but the first time loading gives a bad impression to any user that .net is actually much slower.
