Make A Variable Hold A Reference To An Integer?
Mar 16, 2010Is it possible to make a variable hold a reference to an integer instead of copying its value when using integerVariable = integerValue ?

View 2 RepliesHow does the GC dispose objects created in the following 2 scenarios?
1)
Private Function DoSomething() As Boolean
Return New DatabaseManager().Insert()
End Function
2)
Private Function DoSomething() As Boolean
Dim mngr As New DatabaseManager()
Return mngr.Insert()
End Function
In Option 1, I don't create local variable to hold the reference of the object. In Option 2, I hold the reference in local variable.What option is better and why? (if any)
How do i make a variable that can hold more than 1 piece of data. I wan't a variable that can keep 4 number in it. When i count them in using a for loop the only thing i have after it is finished is the last number counted in by the for loop.

View 5 RepliesIs it okay for a structure variable to hold a small number of reference types? I thinks it's fine because the pointers themselves are not that big, regardless of what they're pointing to. But I never did fully figure out the whole heap/stack thing, so I'd like to make sure.
View 6 RepliesI would like to know how to declare a variable that holds bits.
View 11 Repliesi am reviewing variabes, and just wondering any variables that can be used in math to hold a value this big =)

What's best practice (in VB.Net):
Function GetSomething() as String
GetSomething = "Here's your string"
End Function
or
Function GetSomething() as String
Dim returnString as String = "Here's your string"
Return returnString
End Function
Obviously, neither of these implementations make any sense, but they're just meant to illustrate my point. Is there anything to be gained by using GetSomething itself to store the return value instead of declaring returnString locally and then returning that (does it avoid having an extra string allocated/instantiated - and if so, are there any performance/memory benefits)?
So I do not know at design time if the var ms is going to be a stringreader or a memorystream. So I am trying to do basically this:
Dim ms as object = myfunction...
Dim mytype As Type = ms.GetType
Dim returnedobject = ser.Deserialize(CType(ms, mytype))
But I get an error saying "type mytype is not defined". How can I do this?
Say I have something like this
Dim Level1 as Integer = 83
Dim Goal as String
Goal = InputBox(" What level is your goal?")

I pass this class i created a variable by reference and i want that reference to be assigned to m_Text so that when i change m_Text it changes the TextValue variable i passed. Example:
Dim test2 as String = "ok"
Dim test as New GeneTextBox(test2)
'then some one changes the text in the GeneTextBox and i want it to change the test2 string...
Public Class GeneTextBox
Inherits Windows.Forms.TextBox
Private m_Text As String
Public Sub New(ByRef TextValue As String)

I have the following code passing a dataView variable to a function and I am getting the following warning:"Variable 'cl' is passed by reference before it has been assigned a value. A null reference exception could result at runtime."
Function Editclass()
Dim cl As DataView
Bindclass (SqlConnection2, cl)

I am trying to make a program that will be an auto-run in a game for me, the movement key is W and when i use SendKeys, it just spams W really fast (but with the KeyUps also) so my character just slowly goes and stops goes and stops. Is there a way I can just hold the W key down through VB.NET (such as just placing your finger on a key and holding it down)?
View 5 RepliesThe code below works for the class that I hard coded "XCCustomers" in my RetrieveIDandName method where I use CType. However, I would like to be able to pass in various classes and property names to get the integer and string LIST returned. For example, in my code below, I would like to also pass in "XCEmployees" to my RetrieveIDandName method. I feel so close... I was hoping someone knew how to use CType where I can pass in the class name as a string variable.
Note, all the other examples I have seen and tried fail because we are using Option Strict On which disallows late binding. That is why I need to use CType.I also studied the "Activator.CreateInstance" code examples to try to get the class reference instance by string name but I was unable to get CType to work with that.When I use obj.GetType.Name or obj.GetType.FullName in place of the "XCCustomers" in CType(obj, XCCustomers)(i)I get the error "Type 'obj.GetType.Name' is not defined" or "Type 'obj.GetType.FullName' is not defined"

I have an issue with a third-party COM+ DLL meant to be used from VB6, where it has a function to set a Callback for a hardware event. However, I'm using VB.NET, and AddressOf now returns a reference type instead of an integral type, which means that the setCallback function on the COM+ DLL apparently can't be used.

I don't think I fully understand passing values from a sub to a module. Here is what I'm trying to do (problem is at the '****):
[Code]...
I think I've seen something like this before - where the actual function returns a value. Is this possible? Or would I have to pass an integer variable from the sub to the function, and then return it back to the sub?
Using a "Numeric up down" or text box, how would i save the number the user picked to a variable and then add two to that number?
View 4 RepliesI have a problem when debugging a code. On top of class I declare an array, and the length of array is an integer variable which is applied value below declaration of array.
E.g. class declaration
Dim array1 (2, integer) as string
Public Sub
integer = 5
End Sub
So basically, array is created with integer being 0 or whatever, because it is declared before integer was assigned a value. But the problem is, I need it to be declared at class variable so I can use array in different subs.
Is there anyway to customize a variable to use both an integer and a boolean value?For example. I am kind of making a simulation engine and using GDI as a visual aid, I am generating a grid of tiles for objects to be displayed, but I do NOT want to repaint all the tiles just the ones that have changed, so that I can save fps.So I thought if I could set a variable for the "tile number", "how many objects there are on a tile", and a boolean value for whether or not the tile needs repainted.[code]
View 2 RepliesIs there a way of testing to see if a number variable is an integer, or a decimal?
View 8 RepliesI want to assign the value of the integer returned from the InStr method to a variable. So, If TextBox2.Text = "The Apple Pie" And TextBox1.Text = "App", I want the integer returned, which in this case would be 5, put into a variable, lets say its called 'VarString'.
So VarString (would) = 5.

I am currently looking into the conversion of a string value to an integer. Obviously I will need to do some validation as to whether the passed value is in fact convertible to an integer.
At the heart of my question is this: the users' local is nl-BE (dutch (Belgium)), which means that we use a comma as decimal sign (and points as thousands separator); e.g. 123.456,78 would be a valid nl-BE number. Now, when using the numeric keypad, the
decimal key will yield a point, not a comma (weird huh!). So many user will enter 123456.12 and when converted to an Int, this should yield 123456.
The thing is that I want to cover all possible angles; both points and commas may be used as decimal sign by the users. So I wondering if anyone has written some code that deals with such a situation. I was thinking of an extension method that makes the
conversion based on whether a point or a comma is last used in the passed string (since no thousands separators should occur after the decimal sign).
