Make Compiler Flag Unitialized Form's Private Variable As Error?
Jun 29, 2010I can make the compiler give me an error (Use of variable prior to assignment) with:
private sub Test()
Dim ord As Order
Dim ord2 As Order
[code].....
I can make the compiler give me an error (Use of variable prior to assignment) with:

This error first appear to occur randomly. Steps to recreate:Open Visual Studio and load a solution (some files automatically opened) - this is when the problem occurs Close all open files Restart visual studio and load solution (no issues)Open Exactly the same files again, restart visual studio and load solution so files open automatically (problem occurs!)
However, when trying to narrow it down to a single file (that is automatically opened when the solution is loaded), I couldn't reproduce the problem. Now with all the files open again the problem doesn't occur!!! So it looks like it is fixed - though this happened before and eventually the issue came back.
I think it is to do with one of the user controls with DevExpress controls on it - when the error occurs, the designer displays the error. Though I can't reproduce it at the moment to confirm that.
Just got the Visual Studio 11 developer preview installed. I see a new option in the project properties called "Prefer 32-bit" when compiling a managed (C#, VB) application with the AnyCPU target specified. This doesn't appear to be an option for class libraries, just top-level apps.
View 1 RepliesHow to access a variable that is located in a private sub and then display that variable in another private sub located on the same form.
My actual code is:
Public Sub Button4_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button4.Click
Dim strFileName As String
strFileName = OpenFD.FileName
OpenFD.InitialDirectory = _
[Code] .....
Obviously, the sub in blue has nothing in it currently and so this is the one I would like to access the variable in. The variable I want to use again is 'FILE_NAME'.
if for example i have two private sub I declared a local variable on private sub a... is there a way that private sub b could use the variable created on private sub a? Im asking because im in a problem in my app were using global variable is not an option to make the long story short
View 5 RepliesSay that i have the following code that parse about 20k records from the DB.
Code #1
vb.net While reader.Read()
list.Add(If(Integer.TryParse(reader(0).ToString, 0), Integer.Parse(reader(0).ToString), 0))
End While
And then another code which does the very same thing but it seems to be a little cleaner.
Code #2
vb.net While reader.Read()
Dim storeowner As Integer = 0
Integer.TryParse(reader(0).ToString, storeowner)
list.Add(storeowner)
End While
This is what i am confused about; does the compiler creates a new variable automatically when i use the if statement without strictly declared variable? What approach is better in sense of performance?
make all the controls that i've added to my form (in design time) Private? or do i have to manually open up the .designer.vb and edit it?
View 2 RepliesI need to set a variable , say Flag=1 when a button is clicked.
How do i set the Flag=1 and this variable can be used in OTHER application? Meaning this Flag is set in Program A, then Program B will use this variable (always updated value). I wrote application in VB.NET.
I think app.config isn't that good (use the add key="" value "" ) because when program is executing, it will lock the app.config file.
This Flag variable will be changed according user input (button click) and i try to make this variable use across other application. How to do this?
I'm programming a class library, i want to add form but i need this form to be private so it cannot be seen from outside the library.
View 4 Replieswith a college assignment. We are to make a program for a school class. It is on Flags of Europe. A Picture Viewer should show a flag and the students must type what the flag is in a text box. If it is correct it must say so in a label and display the next flag. I want it to add the correct answers the student got out of 10 flags.

View 4 Replieswhy don't we declare a variable for instance variable with dim not private?
View 3 RepliesI am just new here, i just want to ask if there are any of you who knows on how to determine if the record is flag or deleted in a dbf file. I am trying to make a program which can determine if the record is deleted or flag.

I'm wondering if it is a typo. Do they actually really wanted to say: the implementation of the JVM is free to instead of the compiler is free to.
and my second question is that do we have this issue with C#/VB as well? (in which the ""compiler"" is free to assign a value to a variable even before the variable is fully initiated/even before the constructor function of the class of the variable is fully ran.
Is there any way to know that a variable inside a method is Compiler generated.when decompiling a .net dll or exe the generated code looks like this. [code]
View 8 RepliesI've read several articles and questions/answers that conclude the best practice is to let the JIT compiler do all the optimization for inline function calls. Makes sense. What about inline variable declarations? Does the compiler optimize these as well?
[Code]...
Of course I prefer the latter because it's easier to read and debug, but I can't afford the performance degradation if it exists. I have already identified this code as a bottleneck -- No need for retorts about premature optimization.
I try to add .NET items in my ToolBox (choose items...) by browsing. When I click Open, I get this message:
"The security state of an AppDomain was modified by an AppDomainManager configured with the NoSecurityChanges flag."
I work with VB 2010 and Windows 7 - 64 bits
How is conditional compilation controlled for a VisualBasic web? For a VB Windows app, I put a conditional variable in Project > Compiler tab > Advanced > Custom controls.
How in a VB web app is a conditional compilation variable assigned that can be accessed by all the files of the web app?
I'm working in VB.net and I want to create a generic ToString. is there a way to do a "For Each" in "Me".

I have a public variable which seems to be going out of scope. I am confused as it has been dimensioned as a public variable: Public xlCell as As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Range
I originally had all my code in the same module in the same project and it was wrapped within a For/Next Loop (Example 1). I decided to clean up my code and make it more modular (Example 2). All the code is still in the same module in the same project.
Upon doing so, my public variable is not recognized in any of the private subs that I have created. I keep getting the following error: Message="Object reference not set to an instance of an object." When I test the variable using ?IsNothing(xlCell) in the Main Sub I get False in the main sub. this tells me te variable is recognized. However as soon as the Call SelectCaseSub() is triggered, I get a True value for ?IsNothing(xlCell). Why is this? Shouldn't this variable be in scope regardless?

How can i make my own compiler ?
View 5 RepliesTrying to understand the best way to do this and I'm can't get it figured. Here's basically what I have:
Public Class CardParsingClass
Private iAcctIDStart as integer
Private iAcctIDLength as integer
[code]....
I've only included 2 of the class level fields here but there are actually 30, so that's why I was hoping to be able to send the name of the field to set and the value to set it at in the SetValue function. So in some other routine in the program I'd like to be able to issue the following call:
SetValue("iAcctIDStart", "3")
But then when I get into the SetValue routine, I'm not sure how to proceed. I thought about a case statement that would basically be this:
select Case strFieldToSet
case "iAcctIDStart"
iAcctIDStart = cint(strValue)
[code]....
I come from C# (use VS 2005, .NET 2) and I know that when I declare a private variable I can "extract" from it the corresponding "property". In VB.NET I've declared a lot of properties (in the diagram class designer). Now am I forced manually adding the corresponding private fields?
View 4 RepliesI don't know if this has been asked before, but we're having a discussion about it today at my job. Should private variables (that are shared/static) be instantiated when they are dimensioned/defined, or is it a better practice to do this inside of a constructor?
Public Class IpCam
Private Const HOST As String = "http://test.com/url/example"
Private Shared _Example As New OurClass(HOST)which one to use?

i wont to code in vb.net do that compiler makeing exe for Example make form2.vb to form2.exe or like that
View 2 RepliesWhen referencing class properties from a function within the class do you use the value from the actual property or the private variable value?
public class
private m_Foo as double
public property Foo() as double
[Code].....
On one side, in Vb.Net when you add an event handler to an object the created method is named: <NameOfTheObject>_<NameOfTheMethod>.As I like to have consistent syntax I always follow this rule when creating event handlers by hand.On the other side when I create private variables I prefix them with m_ as this is a common thing used by the community, in C# people use to put _ at the beginning of a variable but this is no CLS compliant.
View 1 RepliesI am running visual studio 2008 with SP1 installed. I have a solution which has 7 projects. One of the vb files (which has some 15000 lines) is freezing the visual studio and when i close the studio it shows the visual basic compilation error. I have tested the solution in other workstations and it is running fine. I tried repairing visual studio and i tried reparing 3.5 sp1.
View 1 RepliesToday I investigated a logical bug in our software and figured out that this is related to the way VB.NET thread variables inside a loop.Let's say I have the following code:
Dim numbers As New List(Of Integer) From {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
For Each number As Integer In numbers
Dim isEven As Boolean
[code]....
The problem is that isEven is declared but not assigned.In this specific case, it would be correct to write dim isEven as Boolean = false but I haven't done this.In VB.NET, a variable that is declared inside a for loop keeps its value for the next itaration. This is by design: [URL]but this is also dangerous pitfall for programmers.
However, until now, I haven't been aware of this problem/behaviour. Until now.Most of our code base is C# anyway, which doesn't allow the use of an uninitialized variable, so there is no problem. But we have some legacy code that is written in VB.NET that we have to support. So the best thing would be to generate a warning or even an error in this specific case.But even with Option Explicit / Option Strict this does not generate a warning / an error.Is there a way make this a compile time error or maybe a way to check this with FxCop?
I've found a difference in overload resolution between the C# and the VB-compiler. I'm not sure if it's an error or by design:
