How To Access Variable Located In Private Sub On Same Form
Jul 25, 2009
How to access a variable that is located in a private sub and then display that variable in another private sub located on the same form.
My actual code is:
Public Sub Button4_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button4.Click
Dim strFileName As String
strFileName = OpenFD.FileName
OpenFD.InitialDirectory = _
[Code] .....
Obviously, the sub in blue has nothing in it currently and so this is the one I would like to access the variable in. The variable I want to use again is 'FILE_NAME'.

Is it possible to set a variable in my custom class for Private Read/Write access and Public Readonly access without creating Properties with Get and Set? In other words, from within my class I want full access and from my form I only want read access. Right now I declare my variable as either Private or Public to control Public read/write access. I tried googling my question a bit but I'm not sure what the correct terms even ar

Trying to understand the best way to do this and I'm can't get it figured. Here's basically what I have:
Public Class CardParsingClass
Private iAcctIDStart as integer
Private iAcctIDLength as integer
[code]....
I've only included 2 of the class level fields here but there are actually 30, so that's why I was hoping to be able to send the name of the field to set and the value to set it at in the SetValue function. So in some other routine in the program I'd like to be able to issue the following call:
SetValue("iAcctIDStart", "3")
But then when I get into the SetValue routine, I'm not sure how to proceed. I thought about a case statement that would basically be this:
select Case strFieldToSet
case "iAcctIDStart"
iAcctIDStart = cint(strValue)
[code]....

I am trying to access the controls' properties on another form without having to modify the code of the other projec (the one containing the controls that I want to access) because it is already compiled as a DLL. In this DLL that I am trying to access, the functions/sub-procedures are all declared as private. Would there be any way of accessing the controls' properties without having to modify the DLL? Basically what I am trying to do is create a sort of console application wrapper for the DLL that would create a new instance of the DLL's form and then make certain checkboxes checked and click certain buttons. Basically, I am trying to automate the form as it currently exists.

I have a public variable which seems to be going out of scope. I am confused as it has been dimensioned as a public variable: Public xlCell as As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Range
I originally had all my code in the same module in the same project and it was wrapped within a For/Next Loop (Example 1). I decided to clean up my code and make it more modular (Example 2). All the code is still in the same module in the same project.
Upon doing so, my public variable is not recognized in any of the private subs that I have created. I keep getting the following error: Message="Object reference not set to an instance of an object." When I test the variable using ?IsNothing(xlCell) in the Main Sub I get False in the main sub. this tells me te variable is recognized. However as soon as the Call SelectCaseSub() is triggered, I get a True value for ?IsNothing(xlCell). Why is this? Shouldn't this variable be in scope regardless?

I come from C# (use VS 2005, .NET 2) and I know that when I declare a private variable I can "extract" from it the corresponding "property". In VB.NET I've declared a lot of properties (in the diagram class designer). Now am I forced manually adding the corresponding private fields?

I don't know if this has been asked before, but we're having a discussion about it today at my job. Should private variables (that are shared/static) be instantiated when they are dimensioned/defined, or is it a better practice to do this inside of a constructor?

Private Const HOST As String = "http://test.com/url/example"
Private Shared _Example As New OurClass(HOST)which one to use?

I have about 60 Child forms
Each have a variable with same name.
In Main form I want to set the value of the variable of the active child.
One way of doing that is like
Select Case Me.ActiveMdiChild.Name
Case "formName"
frmformName.Variable=0
I donot want to do that as it involves writing many cases and I may miss some.
Is there some other way of doing it .
I tried
Dim O as Object = Me.ActiveMdiChil
O.VariableName= 0
and its various variants but its not working

On one side, in Vb.Net when you add an event handler to an object the created method is named: <NameOfTheObject>_<NameOfTheMethod>.As I like to have consistent syntax I always follow this rule when creating event handlers by hand.On the other side when I create private variables I prefix them with m_ as this is a common thing used by the community, in C# people use to put _ at the beginning of a variable but this is no CLS compliant.

I have a DataGridView that is embedded in a TabPage of a TabControl and the TabControl is embedded in a SplitterPanel of a SplitContainer and the SplitContainer is embedded in a ToolStripContentPanel of a ToolStripContainer which is on a Form. I want to get the name of the form the DataGridView is on, how do I do this?
Note: Sometimes in my application the DataGridView will not be embedded in any control other than the Form. So I would need this code to work no matter what the DataGridView is embedded in. For example, if I send my DataGridView as an argument to a function how can I get the name of the form the DataGridView is located on?

How can I get access in a fast way to the single bytes that form a double variable?
In pseudo-code I want to do something like this:
Dim myDouble as Double
Dim myArray(7) as Byte
myArray = myDouble
'continue doing things with the single bytes
The code is meant for use in a I/O-handler. The double-variables have to be sent / received via TCP. For this purpose they shall be put into / assembled from I/O-buffers.

I am new to VB. I have created some labels/textboxes in my Form1. I use them to do some calculations. Basically, this is my calculation area (in Form1) and then I want some of the results that have been calculated and showed in these texboxes to be shown in labels which are in another form (Form2). So here is what I have done in terms of coding:
Label12.Text = Transactions.ComboBox1.SelectedItem
Label13.Text = Transactions.ComboBox2.SelectedItem
Label14.Text = Transactions.ComboBox3.SelectedItem
Label15.Text = Transactions.TextBox1.Text
Label16.Text = Transactions.TextBox2.Text
These codes are in Form2 and Labels 12-16 are in my form2 as well. My form1 is called Transactions as you can see. Everything looks OK, when i run no errors, also when do the calculations and I go from form1(Transactions) to form2, labels 12-16 show the results from form1 but the problem when I go back to form1 and change the values and go back to form2, the labels 12-16 are not changed. They simply show the old values regarding of the fact that they have been changed in form1. So how can I make form2 to show them correctly, to refresh the form or what?

show me how to Load an Image that is located in a Folder created on a nother Form. Public Class CroppingForm Private Sub CroppingForm_Load(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load PictureCropper.Picture = Image.FromFile(MainForm.CurrentFilePath, "PreView Photo.bmp")
End Sub The Image that is sepose to be loaded into PictureCropper is named "PreView Photo.bmp"
By using: PictureCropper.Picture = Image.FromFile(MainForm.NewImage)the Image is being loaded correctly.
Unfortunately this is going to be a problem later on, for a Image with a diferent name will allso have to be saved to the before mentiond Folder. That is the reson for var."CurrentFilePath" it mast hold te Folder Path only "D:DIY.ID Photos"

I have an API that I created and currently utilize successfully in C#. I am trying to create an example of interacting with the API in VB.NET (so that the QA without C# experience can still utilize it for creating automated tests).
In C# I do the following
[TestingForm(FormName= "Land Lines", CaseType= _caseType
, Application= ApplicationNameCodes.WinRDECode, HasActions= true)]
public class LandLines : RDEMainForm
[Code]....
This gives me a compile time error because it claims that FORM_NAME and CASE_TYPE is not defined, even though the class has it defined inside.
How can I use the defined constants inside the class in the class attributes?

I'm using VS 2010 Professional built-in test cases. I've got a class that has a read-only property that looks something like this:
Private _server As IServer = Nothing
Public ReadOnly Property Server()
Get[code]......
In my test cases I want to make a fake server implementation so I can test some of the class methods without actually hitting the server. I've looked around and have seen the InternalsVisibleTo attribute, but that seems to only allow access to Friend-level members. Is there any simple way to get access to these members, aside from declaring them Public/Friend?

I am wondering if there is a way that I can add a form to my DLL and keep it private to the dll? I have a class which handles communication. I would like to be able to call a status form that would have a progress bar on it to show the status of a file upload and perhaps a form for handling comm settings.
The class is public with several public methods and properties but I do not want the form to be available outside the DLL. When I add a form to the project it is set to public and when I change it to private it tells me it must be inside another class.btw any methods used must be supported by CF V2 as this will be ran on Mobile devices.
