Math - Mantissa And Exponent Calculation From Double?
Oct 18, 2010
how to get the mantissa and exponent from a double in VB.net? I know I can do a string parse and some conversion to ints but I wondered if anyone had a mathematical equivalent formula that would allow me to do this?

For greater accuracy I should use a Decimal instead of a Double ( so I've been told ). Why then have Microsoft chosen to use DOUBLE for most of the functions that return a floating point value in the Math Class?

I have a program that scans an image and converts gems to specific numbers. Look at the picture below:So i have a table with numbers. Number 1 is for yellow gem, 2 for blue, etc...
Like:
A B C D E
1 | 1 2 3 4 5
2 | 3 5 2 4 1
[code]....
I want to calculate a step, to get 3 equal numbers (gems) horizontally or vertically. For example, in this table if i swap E2 with D2, D2 will be 1, and D2,D3,D4 creates a valid step, because it's all 1. I'm using VB.NET 2010.My table is 8x8 size, it's just an example above. At now i'm just have the values in multiple variables (A1=1, A2=3, so on..)

im calculating fare amount from 2 masktextbox mtxA and mtxB, i use the format 0000.00 ,, i was able to convert all prompt char values from mtxA and turned them into really zero but however it doesnt do the same on mtxb, though ive used similar code.. so my flow should be: whatever i values i put on mtxA.. on its textchange, its current value should be also put to mtxB plus an additional of 200.00
as an example : if i put on mtxA = 0030.00
mtxB = 0230.00 should be the display
but what is shows on me is mtxB = 2300.00 and also if i save it on the database .00 is not added,.....im tired fixing this so i try to use textbox instead of maskdtextbox, what i did is put lots of conditions and function on keypress to have the same format 0000.00 but i failed because everything on my code mess up whenever the user tried to edit the text according to textbox current position..check textbox.text current length from 0 to before the cursor location...but i dont know what code i should use to get the length..

well i am having a couple of issues with this particular homework problem and this is my first programming class so there is probably quite a few mistakes well the homework problem is to take three double values entered by a user and display the largest and smallest using math.max and math.min and display the smallest and largest so i thought i could use a listbox and take the values that went to the listbox and assign variables to each so i can try to use each variable in the math.max and min but im not making it to far and i actually might be way off

I've got an app that sometimes stores some decently small numbers, such as 0.000023425. These numbers get loaded up in TextBox controls for users to edit.
Dim number As Double = 0.000023425
someTextBox.Text = number.ToString() ' Shows "2.3425E-05"
As mentioned, the text that shows is 2.3425E-05, which isn't exactly intuitive for the user to see, plus I have numbers even more precise (out to 19 decimal places). I would like the output to be fixed point. Of course I could easily and cleanly do:
number.ToString("F20") ' Shows "0.00002342500000000000"
But then there's an annoying number of zeros left over. So, to fix that, I could do:
number.ToString("#,##0.####################") ' Shows "0.000023425"
Which is what I want, but is there any better way to do it than to have that giant ugly format string there? So, ok, it's not that ugly, but surely there's a different way, right? My goal is to show the raw value being stored in the DB in a friendly way, and I would rather not have to force a format on the number at all.I found that changing the underlying datatype to Decimal solves the issue.
Dim number As Decimal = 0.000023425
someTextBox.Text = number.ToString() ' Shows "0.000023425" instead of "2.3425E-05"
So it sounds like Doubles aren't precise enough to be displayed normally?

I work with the Visual Basic Express Edition 2008. I'd like to write in a text box : 1s5 but the 5 has to be the exponent of s like 1s5 does anyone know how I've to write this in Visual Basic?
Second problem is:
Dim foo As New clsParallelPort(&H378, &H379, &H37A)
foo.communicate(2, clsParallelPort.switch.SWITCH_ON) 'switch data 1 on
foo.communicate(3, clsParallelPort.switch.SWITCH_ON) 'switch data 2 on
[Code]...
The problem is that I give out a signal to the 8 data lines and then to the control line 10 and then to the control line 1 but what I'd like to do is to give firste a signal out to the 8 data lines and then at the same time a signal out to control line 10 and 1. How can I do that?

I'm working with Ticks a lot at the moment and when setting a timespan/similar, I find the shorthand exponent notation 3e6 far more easy to read at a glance than 3000000
VS converts to the long form as soon as it tidies up the line.
Is there any way to turn off the editor feature which reformats this?

I have a situation where I am handling both single & double mouse click events on a form. In both cases something has to be loaded, however when a double click occurs, I do not wish to execute the code attached to the single click event. Is there a way to intercept the mouse click's and check if double or single and then execute the right event appropriately?

I have a htpc project that I am working on. The main program loads dll plugins which are basically other win forms. On each of these forms, including the main program, I use a picturebox (a double buffered picturebox) for the background image and then draw everything on it by hand. Whenever I load the form from the dll and show it, I get a weird flicker. It looks like it is the previously used double buffer. Is there any way to clear the background double buffer before the flicker? Or am I going in the wrong direction?
Here's a couple of videos of the problem:

I've asked this question before, and so have many before me, i have done extensive research on the topic and stil no help. Maybe this is some kind of secret info. shared only amongst top programmers. Bt how do you really, trully double buffer a form, aside from setting "Double Bufferd" to true, which doesn't work in most cases, I want to know how do companies lyk Microsoft and Symantec, prevent flashes on big applications such Word and Norton.

I am trying to do math (-, +, *, etc) based on what a user selects from a combo box. The combo has the operators (-, +, *, /) in its items list. when the user selects one of them, I want to use that operator with the two numbers the user also provides from two text boxes.
dim intNumOne as integer
dim intNumTwo as integer
dim intAnswer as integer
[Code]....
'I don't think I want to concatenate here. but this is what I would like to happen (use the operator based on the users selection from the combo and the two numbers from the text boxes. I know I could write a select case or If statement but is there a way to do what I'm trying to do without Select Case or If? I tried to make theOperator a 'char' type variable but that didn't work either.

Is there any way to parse a string in vb.net (like, built in methods), that can do math like Eval can? For example, 3+(7/3.5) as a string would return 2.
I am not asking for you to code this for me, I just want to know if there is a built in way to do this, if there is not I will code it myself.
I can wager that it would not be able to parse stuff like Sin(90) on its own, and I understand that would need to be replaced by Math.Sin(90).
