in a winform, in vb net,I have a list view with hoverselection set to true. I start a drag and drop operation when the mousedown event is fired, but it's fired only when i release the mouse button on the control or on the dropped control!

My question to you is, can I delay the mouse down event so that it does not intefere with the code of the Mouse.Click event? I have tried adding a timer and waiting x amount then setting a bool value to true, but the code executes to fast and it skips the other code.
View 6 RepliesI'm currently debugging a form that sets a flag when the mouse button is pressed, then clears the flag when the mouse button is released. As long as the mouse button is pressed, the user can move the mouse around and a few things happen depending on where they move. One of the things that happens is that a timer starts, or stops, and a few things change color depending on the mouse position. The timer starts when it should, then stops when it should, but once stopped, it is not re-starting when it should. I can verify that MouseMove events are getting through, because coloring changes as I move the mouse, as it should. This would be a simple thing to debug...except that it requires the darn mouse button to be down, and it uses the mouse move event. Anybody who has put a breakpoint in a mouse move event handler knows the issue: There are THOUSANDS of them. Worse yet, since the mouse button is necessary for switching to the IDE, as well as setting a breakpoint (technically, a keyboard shortcut could do this if I could shift focus), I can't wait for the problem to happen, then switch to the IDE and set a breakpoint to see what is happening then.Does anybody have any tips or techniques for debugging in mouse move events when the mouse button is down and has to stay that way? As it is, I'm going to have to write some funky code into the method just so that I have a place to get a breakpoint when I need it without breaking on every one of the mouse move events.

I have a mixed DGV of bound fields and an unbound checkbox. The DGV uses an SQL statement with a Group By clause. I then populate the DGV via table adapter/DS. So, I have two issues, first I need to get the status from another table that has the value of 0 or 1 in a column and set that checkbox. The part number already loaded into a cell will link to this table. I cannot link this table directly to my Group By table because it would lose its logic. The second issue, is changing the checkbox and saving it both to this table and the DGV for display.
I'm confused at which events in the DGV will need to be fired to do these tasks?This code seems to work OK but seems to run a little slow. So, i'm wondering if my approach to this is incorrect.

Work = New ExampleWork()Here the Work is a withevents variable and I've used the handles clause for handling various events fired by the ExampleWork object. However the event handler will not get assigned till the constructor of the ExampleWork returns. Now how can I handle any events fired from the constructor? I can move the constructor logic out to a separate method and call it after the constructor has returned and thus handle all the fired events including events fired from constructor. I want to visually simulate "dragging" an object (though I do not want to use standard drag and drop for reason of purpose).Basically, I have a label object that, on its MouseDown event, I want it to follow the mouse cursor inside a 640x480 solid-size grid (but not outside of it!). Mind you, this grid is centered inside a full-screen window. Again, the object should not follow the mouse outside of the grid (I'm guessing a "ClipToBounds = True" here)Then, on the label's MouseUp event, I want it to either stay in its current position or return to its original position, as determined by the value of a boolean variable set by another object's MouseEnter property.Note, if it would be easier to work with, I can change the grid to a canvas in a cinch. My end game is really to be able to monitor events fired in many objects from another object, isn't there a more maintainable way to do that then to add a special sub in each object that handles the event that I want to catch? how to view and populate a listview with a text file. Now I come seeking wisdom on how do create an effect based upon the location where a mousedown event occured.
Here is my example. (I like to give simple examples because it helps me learn rather than be given the answer and learn nothing).
I am working in vb.net, in a windows form. I have a map of Western Europe called picturebox1.
I want another form to pop up when a user clicks on a section of picturebox1. For example: I want a "Germany" form to pop up when the user clicks on Germany. And such for if France, Spain, Italy, Austria, England, Scotland, etc...based on the location of the mousedown event.
Historically, when working with a picturebox with sections that were rectangle, I would do little screenshots and overlay them over the picturebox and use that as a cheat.
The challenge here is that the countries are polygons and now I need to learn this for real. I am looking for a little direction on where to go to learn about a mousedown event that causes an effect based upon the location of the mousedown event.
This can be a challenge because each country is of different x, y location coordinates so I image I need to create an elaborate if or case statement to capture and evalute. However, I don't know how to acquire the coordinates of a mousedown.

I created a control that has picture box control docked within it. This control allows me to "animate" the image by swapping them out by setting the interval to swap them at. I want to use this control kind of like an animated icon within a application, but because the picture box is docked, the control I created won't respond to the events, MouseHover specifically. View 2 RepliesI've been working on a GUI in WPF which I'm fairly new to, having only used Windows Forms up until now. So far, my GUI is very simple: it contains two rectangles, each of which drops a shadow. The shadow creates an effect of rectangles "floating above the canvas" so to speak.
When one of the rectangles is pressed, the myRectangle.MouseDown event is handled such that the shadow goes away, thus creating an effect of the rectangle being pressed down onto the canvas, like a button.Similarly, when mouse button is released, the myRectangle.MouseDown event is handled such that the shadow reappears and the rectangle "floats" again. This behavior make them resemble buttons. Note, there a reasons I want them to be rectangles and not custom buttons.

If the pointer leaves a rectangle while mouse button is pressed, I'd like shadow to reappear. This is arguable simple, because theoretically in this case, any time myRectangle.MouseLeave is raised, the shadow should come back on, even if it was already there.If the pointer left a rectangle when mouse button was pressed, then came back while before the button was released, I want the shadow to disappear again. This one is what gives me problems. No idea how to do this.
I am new to VB.NET, Now i'm working with Events in VB.NET, I have two event methods, Mouse Click and Mouse Down for a single button in a form, I have displyed a message in each of these methods but only mouse down event is triggered. Why Mouse Click is not triggered? Similiarly I Did the same for Mouse Enter and Mouse Move for a particular button, in this case both the events are triggered.

View 2 RepliesI have a form with 2 contols that I with to connect by drawing a "wire" on the screen. It goes like this: you mouse down on the first control then move the mouse while holding the mouse button down. When the mouse is over the 2nd control the mouse button is released and the controls are wired.
So I am playing with mouseup, down, move, etc. When the mouse is over the first control I get mouse moves from that control, but when it moves off the events stop, and I get no events from the form even though the mouse is there.
Is there a way to do this? I have seen it done in a Java app. I could brute force it and just draw a box on the form instead of a control, but that sounds like a step back.
Normally the event: PanelTransparentMarquee_MouseUp is only raised when the mouse is within the PanelTransparentMarquee panel. I'd like it raised where ever the mouse is on the screen.So in the load event for the usercontraol containing

I've got a NotifyIcon that signals downloadable application updates. I want the download page to open on a Left Click on the NotifyIcon and on a Left Click on the NotifyIcon balloon (on screen for 10 seconds). However, when I handle the BalloonTipClicked event I can't figure out if it was a Left or a Right click. Thus, while the balloon is still on screen and the user Right clicks on the icon, I get both the popup menu and the download page opening. How do I detect the Right mouse button was used?

View 16 RepliesI'm working on a grid of cells that is something like a DataGridView, but not really. The two are close enough that you can picture a DGV for the purpose of this question. What is actually there (and this is true for actual DGVs) is a set of cells drawn on the screen with a couple scrollbars for vertical and horizontal scrolling which are only drawn if there is too much data to show in the visible cells. There aren't more cells than the ones that are visible, so when you scroll the scroll bar, it looks like new cells are being displayed, but what is actually happening is that the existing cells are just being filled with different data depending on the position of the scrollbar. The key observation is that the set of controls displayed in the grid is always the same (unless the grid is re-sized, but that's not relevant to this issue). The appearance of those controls can change, but the controls themselves do not.
One of the features I am adding is the ability to drag-copy data similar to how Excel works. In my case, if you click on a cell, then drag outward (move the mouse while holding the button down), all the cells in the selection rectangle are tinted green. This works nicely. Some of the cells are enabled, while others are disabled. If the drag selection includes disabled cells, those are not tinted. Only enabled cells can be selected, though a drag can cover disabled cells. The relevant point here is that some cells are enabled and some are disabled.
The feature that I am adding is the ability to do drag selection beyond the visible edge of the grid. The grid is a monthly calendar, and I simply can't get 31 cells onto even a wide-format screen. What I am trying to do is allow the user to do drag-copy onto days that are not currently visible. The way I do this, the user clicks in a cell, then drags out to the border, at which point the grid scrolls (the scrollbars move, and the contents of the cells is updated as a result of the changes to the scrollbar value). This is largely working.
The way I handle the selection is that when the user presses the mouse button while over a cell, a flag is set to indicate that the button was pressed, and the current cell is recorded (so that I know where I started from). MouseMove events are used to figure out what new cells the user has visited, and set the selection area based on whatever is under the rectangle described by the initial click point and the current point. Lastly, when the user releases the mouse button, the MouseUp event initiates the actual copy. At that event, I know that the user is done with that copy action. Therefore, the MouseUp event is kind of critical, and therein lies the problem.
As I mentioned, some of the cells are disabled and some are enabled. Disabled controls don't raise events. If I click on a cell, it HAS to be enabled, but that's fine. The problem is that if I then move the mouse in such a fashion that the grid scrolls such that the cell that I had initially clicked on is no longer enabled, then the cell doesn't raise events any more, and the MouseMove and MouseUp events stop happening.I only see one viable solution, which is to not toggle the enabled state of the grid cells. Instead, I would have to have to add a custom property that would make the control act and look disabled as far as the user was concerned, but it wouldn't be disabled as far as the program was concerned such that it would keep raising mouse events. This would be pretty rough, since I would need to prevent the control from appearing to have focus even though it technically would have focus

I'm trying to make a way to navigate around a custom grid. Basically, I'm implementing the drag-copy feature from Excel. Right now, you click on a cell grid and can drag around the grid. Anything in the drag area gets a green tint. Once you release the mouse button, whatever was in the first cell selected is copied to all the others that are tinted. That works pretty nicely, but it works only for the cells visible on the screen. I can live with that, but decided that if you dragged over the scroll bars or the column or row headers,then the grid should scroll (if there is anywhere to scroll).
That's where the problem arose. It turns out that scrollbars don't raise the MouseMove event (at least not as far as I can see), and the MouseEnter and MouseHover events are not fired as long as the mouse button is held. Interestingly, the MouseLeave event does occur when the mouse button is held, just as the MouseMove event is occuring for all the cells. That's pretty annoying. Why do some mouse events get raised when the mouse button is down while the others don't? Also, I suppose, is there any way around this?
