I originally wrote this with Option Strict Off but I'm wanting to rewrite my application with Strict set to On. The error I get with Strict set to on is: "Option Strict On disallows implicit conversions from 'Object' to 'System.Delegate'."

I have the following code in an Asp.Net user control:
Me.pnlAddComment.Visible = MyBase.Associate.IsAgent()
Me.lblRating.Visible = Me.pnlAddComment.Visible
Me.Rating1.Visible = Me.pnlAddComment.Visible
Now when I run this code, the value of MyBase.Associate.IsAgent() is true. Yet at no point is Me.pnlAddComment.Visible evaluating to true. When I output the results as Response.Write statements, it shows IsAgent = True, pnlAddComment.Visible = False. When I run it in debug mode, placing the line break on the second line above to allow the set to occur: I put the mouse over IsAgent and it displays "True"; I put the mouse over pnlAddComment.Visible and it displays "False".
A Co-worker suggested that it's possible that it's Panel.Visible black box code in the getter that allows the assignment to occur but returns false because some parent object is set (at that point in the code execution) to False. I've reviewed the parent objects and at no time do any of them appear to be set to not visible.
If this were a reference type I might be convinced that some other process is modifying the reference between this assignment and when it is actually used (at Render), but this is happening right at this line of code.What would cause this boolean assignment to behave this way without throwing an exception?
Solution:The answer turned out to be a parent object in the control hierarchy located outside of the user control itself. Since nothing was explicitly set to false, and I agreed with @Shadow Wizard, @Damien_The_Unbeliever and @CodeMonkey1 that it had to be some outside control influencing the panel at that point, I decided to put a recursive while loop to test the parent of each user control in the hierarchy at that point:

Then I just ran this on the server and the output came back with the full visibility of each control in the chain. What ended up occurring is that this control was contained within a view control within a MultiView. This view control is expected to be visible as it is supposed to be the ActiveView for this particular call, but at the point in the life cycle when my code is run, the view has not been identified as the active view. Since it's not officially active, the view is implicitly false, and all child controls return a value of false when Visible is queried.
The rest of the assignments behave as expected from that point. The lblRating control is set to false (permanently) because at that moment the proper visibility setting for pnlAddComment is false. The lesson I've learned here is not to make control visibilities dependent on each other in this fashion when there is an alternative (and just as simple) method.

I had problems with treeview methods, but when I run them using invoke method everything is ok. But I still have one problem. When I load the form for the first time, everything works fine. But, when I then close the form (me.dispose, me.close), and load it once again, when Filesystemwathcer start the procedure i have an exception "invoke or begininvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created" trying to run a treeview.invoke method?

I know how to invoke, safely, the control from which it was not created from a thread. there are threads being processed in a threadpool, all of which calls an "agent" (which is a notifier to raise an event back to the UI to then increase the progressbar). an "agent" is set as a property in a State object, which is then passed into a method which will be executed on the ThreadPool. so, I invoke on the UI the method to update the progressbar, but the bar does not seem to update at all (screen frozen) and it takes a very very long time for it to execute. without threading, no problem.

I have a radio button control on a web form. The members of my ListItem collection are
assigned the following.

Value 0
Text Yes
Value 1
So what I need to do, is to readd a varchar value from my database and if the column value returned equals 'Yes' then I need to select the radio button that has the assigned value of 1. Otherwise if the value read from the database is 'No', then I need to select the radio button assigned a value of 0
So how can I set the value for my radio button? I experimented and could not figure it out. The 'Yes' or 'No' value is stored in my database in the field ds.Tables("employee").Rows(0).Item("answer")
So I tried something like this which is not correct:
RadioButtonList1.Items.FindByValue(ds.Tables("employee").Rows(0).Item("answer") = "Yes").Equals(True)
I am trying to convert "-10,00" from a string into a currency using the Swedish culture. Here is my code:

The output from the above code is: -1.000,00 kr, which is wrong. It should be -10,00 kr. Is there anything wrong with my approach?
The solution is to pass the cultureInfo into the ToDecimal function as a second parameter.

I'm creating an open-source web browser in VB.NET Express 2008 and I've created a User Setting named History to save a collection of strings for the browsing history. However, when I try to load the history form at runtime, only the first item (of the three I added) shows up in the listbox. I have a script that attempts to load XML text from a URL and I am having difficulty figuring out how to check to see if it is valid, normalized XML. I don't have a schema as there are several variables which could change the XML format, I just want to check to make sure all of the opening tags are closed properly so I can verify that the entire string loaded properly.

I am looking for a code snippet which opens a image, creates a clone of this bitmap in memory disposes this opened image so that all handles are closed.
Usually we can open a bitmap using this[code...]
the following code however keeps the Image File locked until the application is running, any suggestions how to dispose it properly. (So that no handle is left open )

With setting the string length. I have got a streamreader reading from a .doc file into a listbox and then i want to set the string length of how long it to be and then if longer to go to the next line so it will fit in the listbox as the listbox you cant scroll accross but you can up and down.

I have a method that I've created that accepts a button as a parameter and sets the case to UPPER case if the text of the button is lower case or lower case if the text of the button is UPPER case. I've been pulling my hair out over some unexpected behavior from nullable integers.If I set an Integer to Nothing, it becomes Nothing as expected. If I set an Integer? to a String that is Nothing, it becomes 0! Of course I get this whether I explicitly cast the String to Integer? or not.[code] Previously I had my code up here so without the explicit conversion to Integer? and everyone seemed to be fixated on/confused by that. There were a lot of suggestions that Option Strict On would catch this type of thing. However, this is actually a quirk of the string-to-integer conversion rules which predate nullable types, but still impact them.

I need to be able to set the limit of the string length for certain fields.Is there an easy way to set the limit of the field so that if the string was larger then the limit then just take the substring and if smaller would add extra spaces?I was able to accomplish something similar to this with integers by just using .toString("00000").

View 1 RepliesI have a little problem with application setting in VB.net 2008. I want to switch main server and backup server connection string with combobox. [Code] It did change the Application Setting connection string in the main form when combobox1 was changed. But the problem comes, when child form was called. On the child form there is DataGridView with Dataset using application connection string. Even the Backupserver was selected on the main form, child form dataset connection string doesn't change. I don't know how to pass the current connection string to child form dataset although it is set to use application setting.

In our projects we use setting variables to store user setting for the applications. Moreover, with every latest version of the applications, we upgrade these variables to retain user settings.Normally, this works fine, but recently one of my end user reported an error i.e.Configuration System failed to initialize". The error is related to user.config file. Therefore we requested the user to send us his file.After received the folder, we noticed that it contains 3 files (3begfjb.newcfg,3begfjb.tmp and user. config). 3begfjb.tmp is an empty file, while 3begfjb.newcfg and user.config are identical files. We tried to open these files but the data in user.config isn't proper xml rather its unreadable formatted file.Do any you guys had experienced this sort of issue or any ideas how and what may have created these files and corrupted user.config file.
