Referencing A Class As A Web Service

Nov 18, 2011

I am building application that will be hosted as a web service. This app takes an employeeID and returns an employee object that contains lots of info regarding the employee. (name, status, full-time/part-time, etc)I want the two existing apps we have (and more to come) to be able to call a method that the web service will have and return the employee object. (also at time this web service that returns the object may have new fields added to it - Pay rate, etc)How would I go about creating a new object from this web service reference in the existing applications.Would I decalre it like Dim Employee as new emp_webservice.employee? And then be able to use this object within the app? Or would the better practice be to also included the same class files? It seems like this would not be the way to go, since if I make a change to that class I then have to make it in all places.

VS 2010 Referencing Web Service With Code?

Mar 22, 2011

I did a search on the internet but came up with very limited results. I'm using asp/vb and need to create a n application that does the following steps:

1. User defines web service URLs to WSDL pages .. populated in combo drop down (already coded)
2. User selects web service - Clicks Connect
3. User is prompted for any input fields the web service requests.
4. Output (in XML) is displayed after input fields are populated.

I know how to reference web services in the development environment, and use them... but have no idea how to dynamically create them and show the input fields requested.

.net - .NET XML Web Service, Consuming Class Not Able To Access Web Service Class?

Mar 21, 2012

I am creating a simple XML web service and have run into something I can't quite explain. My web service class has the following structure :

Imports System.Web.Services
Imports System.Web.Services.Protocols
Imports System.ComponentModel

[code]....

Invoking my method using the built in VS web service test harness works fine. I created another project, in another solution, to test consuming the web service. I added a web reference to my project and set it so I could reference my web service by using "localWS". Then in the page load event of my consuming class I tried to instantiate an object of my web service:

Dim srv As New localWS.MyWS

But there was no "MyWS" type found. There is however a localWS.MyWSSoapClient class. When I use it I can invoke my web methods. My question is, why can't I create a straight up version of MyWS class? In the tutorials I'v read, and in the book I have, example consuming classes for .NET XML web services can instantiate objects of the web service class they are consuming. As a further test I added a new web form to my web service project and from there I was able to instantiate a MyWS class.

Creating A Class And Referencing It

Feb 20, 2009

how to create a class yet, and I think I need to learn how.I am wanting to shorten my code in a form, thinking of creating several classes to do so.Lets use a Listview as a reference if you dont mind.Say there is a listview, you have a numeral amount of if statments to fill by. Is there a way to create a class(is this the way to go) so that you can open the class to modify that specific block of code? Example of questionYou have multiple items you need to add for each if statement. Animal as a group Dog as an item 14 years as a sub item Cat as an item 11 years as a sub itemIs this the way to go, if so how do you create a class and call it from a form?Davids Learning

Windows Service: Multiple Instances Of The Same Service Class?

May 3, 2011

When you create a Windows Service, you create a list of the services you want to start. The default is this:

ServicesToRun = New System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase() {New Service}

Can you have multiple instances of the same Service class (that bind to different addresses or ports), like this?

ServicesToRun = New System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase() {New Service("Option1"), New Service("Option2")}

Or will that cause problems? Should we use two different classes instead?

Referencing An Object (class) Within A Thread Fails

Jun 8, 2012

Referencing an object (class) within a thread fails

I have an object ("a vb class") that needs to run on a separate thread and communicate with the U/I.

Even using sample code, I cannot get the object to run within a thread. I demonstrate this problem with two examples. The first calls a function within the form and it works perfectly. The second creates an object and performs the same calls, but fails.

example #1 [working] (Called within a form)
Private Delegate Sub FuctionToBeRunInThreadDelegate
Private Sub Button1_Click(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

[Code]....

SUMMARY: When the thread creates the object, it appears that the object is not actually running inside of a thread or else form.InvokeRequired would be true. I have other more complex examples where this is strongly verified and evidenced, but I provided these two as a very simple demonstration of my problem. How can I have a thread "own" a series of individual objects so that the objects are run asynchronously and can independently report back to the U/I?

VS 2008 Referencing A Property In The Parent ITEMS Class

May 6, 2010

I have a collection class, say ITEMS, that inherits a Dictionary (of String, SINGLEITEM). From the SINGLEITEM class, I would like to reference a property in the parent ITEMS class, what is the best way to do this? For example, say the ITEMS class has an IsDirty property and I would like to set that if ANY of the contained SINGLEITEM objects is modified, what's the best way to go about doing this?

I know I could add a reference to the collection class in each SINGLEITEM class (since I override the ADD method, I could make this assignment), but this seems like overkill.

Inside The Service Class, Declare A Class Variable Named Started?

May 8, 2012

Create a class named Service. Inside the Service class, declare a class variable named Started. The datatype of this variable is Boolean.Public Class Service Dim started as Boolean End Class Create a class named Server. Inside the Server class, declare a dynamic array that can contain elements of the type Service.(Note: For convenience, both the array and the variable Started can be accessible from a client program that creates an instance of Server and Service respectively)

Create a constructor for the Service class. When the constructor is executed, it will set the value of the class variable Started to True. Create two new classes: WebServer and DatabaseEngine. Both of these classes inherit from the class Service. Inside the Service class, declare a Sub procedure (method) named Terminate. This method should display the following text Service stopping in a message box when executed. This method can be overridden in classes that inherit from Service class.

Inside both the WebServer and DatabaseEngine class, override the method Terminate inherited from their base class Service. Both methods should first call the base class Terminate method. The messages Web server stopping and Database engine stopping should also be displayed in a message box when the Terminate method for the WebServer and DatabaseEngine are called respectively. These messages should only be displayed if the Started variable inherited from their base class is not equal to False.

Inside the Server class, declare a method named Shutdown. This method does not return any value. When executed, it will call the Terminate method for each of the Service instances (if any) in the arrServices
array. You should call the Terminate method within a For Each loop that loops through the elements of the arrServices array.

In the Sub Main method, create an instance of the class Server. Set the size of the arrServices array in
your Server instance to contain 2 elements. Create first a WebServer instance and then a DatabaseEngine
instance into this array. Call the Shutdown method from your Server instance.

Adding A Windows Service Class To A Class Library

Feb 14, 2012

I have a class library in VB.NET that does a NET-envelope for an USB device driver. There is only one function of that driver that I could not envelope in a traditional class, but I had to put it in a Windows Service as described here:Sharing a class property (field) between applications. The Windows Service works fine, but I have now two projects for my NET-envelope: the one with the class library, the second with the windows service and I do not like the idea to maintain two distinct projects for the same driver. Is it a good practice (or even if possible) to add a windows service class to a normal class library (without creating its own project as described in the vb tutorial)?I know, in any case I should create a separate setup only for the windows service, but in this way I could have together all the classes that envelope my usb device driver in only one project.

IDE - Upgrade To 2010 Projects Referencing A Class Library Targeting A Different Framework Fail To Build

Aug 18, 2010

Say I have a Framework 4.0 project that is referencing a class library targeting 3.5. The project will simply not build. It won't give me any valid error message it will just act as though the reference does not exist.

Projects that were working like this in Visual Studio 2008 are no longer working in 2010. Took me forever to figure out what there error is. If I remove the project reference and add it back the intellisense lights up and you can tell a variable referenced in the class library is found. But as soon as you build the project everything is lost. My using statements get underlined, references to the variable all turn grey and project fails to build saying the class cannot be found. Once I make the class library 4.0 as well everything builds. I get the same issue between 4.0 client profile and 4.0 as well.

How To Consume A Web Service In A .NET Class Project

Dec 14, 2009

I want to create a class library .NET web project that encapsulates the functionality of consuming a web service. I can create the .NET class web project and add a web service (Visual Studio 2005) but I cannot seem to figure out how to reference it. Shared Class Across A Web Service Boundary?

Aug 15, 2011

I have a class in a shared library, that I have added references to on both the webservice and the client project. One of the functions in the webservice returns a list of this class.

when I try to cast the return value into a List of the class on the client side, I keep getting an error telling me that a 1-dimensional array of type '<webservice.class>' cannot be converted to type '<sharedlib.clas>'.

The reason that I put the class into the shared library, was because I wanted the webservice to return strongly typed data, but I also have a couple of methods in the class. I dont care about them on the server side, but they are needed on the client side. I figured that this would be the "better" method, since in a shared library it is only declared once for both projects.

Xml - Use A Custom Class To Return Data From A Web Service?

I could use a List(of String()) to send the values back but I want to use a List(of Custom_Class) instead because later I have to do this on a much larger scale and I want to learn on this simpler version.

WCF Service Generated Proxy Class Exposing Function As ByRef Sub

May 23, 2011

I have a WCF Service exposing a single contract and operation:

<ServiceContract(Namespace:="ImageSystem")> _
Public Interface IUploadService
<OperationContract()> _

[Code].....

This subsequently leads to stream casting issues, because the generated function allows me to pass a memory stream as an input (which works correctly when passed through to the service), but instead of passing me back a new stream for the response, it attempts to cast the MessageBodyStream received from the service into my memory stream.

This is, in some ways similar to other posts but as you can see, there are no enums involved in my contracts - presence of Enums caused strange proxy class generation is marked as the answer in the similar post.

Is there anywhere I configure the proxy behaviour to use the contracts I've specified? Clearly I'm within a dev/test environment currently, but when this eventually goes to production it will be memory and file streams passed to the service, and the returned stream can be in any format to be honest, I intend to treat it as the abstract stream class. The only way round this I can see right now is to change my in stream to be the same as the anticipated out stream, but surely there is a better way?

i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:

Warning: Type library exporter encountered a type that derives from a
generic class and is not marked as
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)]. Class interfaces cannot be
exposed for such types. Consider marking the type with
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)] and exposing an explicit
interface as the default interface to COM using the
ComDefaultInterface attribute.

It does not work. I have tried to call it through a class library but this does not work either as the end point is not set correctly.
