How To Consume A Web Service In A .NET Class Project

I want to create a class library .NET web project that encapsulates the functionality of consuming a web service. I can create the .NET class web project and add a web service (Visual Studio 2005) but I cannot seem to figure out how to reference it. It's easy to reference in a web site (simply address it by name), but apparently in the class library project things are different because I cannot figure out the namespace or reference name.

I created a dll project in visual studio 2008, and i dont see the add web reference option, only the Service Reference option whish looks like it takes a WCF not a regular asmx web service, is that correct?

I'm pushing the bounds of what one should ask of others with this one, but I'm totally stuck, so here goes.This is my first web service. Not only that, it's my companies first web service - nobody I work with has ever written or consumed anything like this one. I know these things are not complicated, but for a first kick at the can, this is killing me because the API is so large.

I need to write a Windows forms app in VB 2008 to communicate with a Web Service.I have searched MSDN and many other sites trying to find a good tutorial or example code with no luck. The one really good piece of code I found did not compile.It needed to import Microsoft.UDDI.I found numerous references to the UDDI SDK, but could not find any site where I could successfully download it.I have the UDDI.dll but it is in my VB 8 folder and would not register.There is no such ddl in my VB 9 folder.

We are in the process of creating a new WCF web service (WCF service that has an basicHttpBinding Endpoint) to carry out some of our business logic. The web application connects not problem at all, however our legacy Compact framework application doesn't seem to see the service at all. Are we on to a loser here and should we just revert to ASMX web service (the Compact framework cannot be upgraded) or is there a way around this?

I'm building a .NET component that will call an external web service. I used the "Add Service Reference" dialog to add the web service to my component, which generates the code needed to consume the service and adds the settings to the app.config file.I'm testing the component by adding a reference to its DLL from a Console application and calling the appropriate method that creates a new instance of the web service: ... = new MyServiceSoapClient(). However, when I do this, I get the following exception:
InvalidOperationException
Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'MyServicesSoap' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.This makes sense since the app.config isn't being brought over with the component's DLL. How can I call the web service without having to rely on the settings in the App.Config?

I am creating a simple XML web service and have run into something I can't quite explain.My web service class has the following structure :

Invoking my method using the built in VS web service test harness works fine. I created another project, in another solution, to test consuming the web service. I added a web reference to my project and set it so I could reference my web service by using "localWS". Then in the page load event of my consuming class I tried to instantiate an object of my web service:
Dim srv As New localWS.MyWS
But there was no "MyWS" type found. There is however a localWS.MyWSSoapClient class. When I use it I can invoke my web methods. My question is, why can't I create a straight up version of MyWS class? In the tutorials I'v read, and in the book I have, example consuming classes for .NET XML web services can instantiate objects of the web service class they are consuming. As a further test I added a new web form to my web service project and from there I was able to instantiate a MyWS class.

When you create a Windows Service, you create a list of the services you want to start. The default is this:
ServicesToRun = New System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase() {New Service}
Can you have multiple instances of the same Service class (that bind to different addresses or ports), like this?
ServicesToRun = New System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase() {New Service("Option1"), New Service("Option2")}
Or will that cause problems? Should we use two different classes instead?

I've created a windows service and started a deployment project for it. I have the project installer class in the service project and I've added the "Standard output etc.." from the service project as custom actions for the Deployment Project. When I attempt to install it, I get the error "Specified service already exists", which shouldn't happen (even though the service does exist) because the installer should be removing the old service and installing the new one.
I've checked that the versions are different, and that the Product Code is also different, also RemovePreviousVersions is set to true. Create a class named Service. Inside the Service class, declare a class variable named Started. The datatype of this variable is Boolean.Public Class Service Dim started as Boolean End Class Create a class named Server. Inside the Server class, declare a dynamic array that can contain elements of the type Service.(Note: For convenience, both the array and the variable Started can be accessible from a client program that creates an instance of Server and Service respectively)
Create a constructor for the Service class. When the constructor is executed, it will set the value of the class variable Started to True. Create two new classes: WebServer and DatabaseEngine. Both of these classes inherit from the class Service. Inside the Service class, declare a Sub procedure (method) named Terminate. This method should display the following text Service stopping in a message box when executed.This method can be overridden in classes that inherit from Service class.
Inside both the WebServer and DatabaseEngine class, override the method Terminate inherited from their base class Service. Both methods should first call the base class Terminate method. The messages Web server stopping and Database engine stopping should also be displayed in a message box when the Terminate method for the WebServer and DatabaseEngine are called respectively. These messages should only be displayed if the Started variable inherited from their base class is not equal to False.
Inside the Server class, declare a method named Shutdown. This method does not return any value. When executed, it will call the Terminate method for each of the Service instances (if any) in the arrServices
array. You should call the Terminate method within a For Each loop that loops through the elements of the arrServices array.
In the Sub Main method, create an instance of the class Server. Set the size of the arrServices array in
your Server instance to contain 2 elements. Create first a WebServer instance and then a DatabaseEngine
instance into this array. Call the Shutdown method from your Server instance.

I have a class library in VB.NET that does a NET-envelope for an USB device driver.There is only one function of that driver that I could not envelope in a traditional class, but I had to put it in a Windows Service as described here:Sharing a class property (field) between applications.The Windows Service works fine, but I have now two projects for my NET-envelope: the one with the class library, the second with the windows service and I do not like the idea to maintain two distinct projects for the same driver.Is it a good practice (or even if possible) to add a windows service class to a normal class library (without creating its own project as described in the vb tutorial)?I know, in any case I should create a separate setup only for the windows service, but in this way I could have together all the classes that envelope my usb device driver in only one project.

I'm trying to open a project we did in class the other day at home.
When I try to open the project in VB, I get an error that's not terribly helpful. It basically says the project cannot be opened because its project type () is not supported by this application.
I believe that the information I need should be contained within the paren which is blank in my error message. I've looked up the error message and all the examples I've seen contain some information there.
The project was done using VS 2008 in VB in the classroom. That's exactly what I have at home. The only thing that I can think of is that something is missing from my version of VS2008 at home. The reason why I believe this is because when we needed to use SQL, it was already installed at school whereas I needed to go out and download then install it at home. So I assume my install at home is somehow incomplete. I've thought about uninstalling everything at home and re-downloading it and selecting all of the "add-ons" when I do it. This could be a total waste of time though since I don't really know what's going on.
I just thought I'd ask around before going through that.
EDIT: I downloaded VS 2008 Pro from dreamspark. Everything seems to be working.

I have developed an application in VB.Net 2005 Express. This app was then transformed into a windows service using a template I found on this forum. I am able to install the service using InstallUtil.exe and I am very happy, BUT the powers that be me are asking for a more eligant method of installing / upgrading the service.
All of my reading suggests I need to upgrade to VS 2008 Enterprise to achieve this goal. Before I lash out and reach for my credit card, can someone confirm the minimum requirement to achieve a pretty service installation.

I'm currently starting work on my first windows service and I've encountered what I find to be a strange error. For some reason the compiler is telling me that a whole bunch of typical classes (such as Image, Bitmap, Graphics, etc) do not exist. For example, these simple lines of code, which work perfectly in a normal project, return a bunch of errors:
Bitmap b = new Bitmap(destWidth, destHeight); //Error 13 The type or namespace name 'Bitmap' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)
Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage((Image)b); //Error 17 The type or namespace name 'Image' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)

Now that I've got this service that runs really great on my 32-bit development machine when I use InstallUtil.exe to install it, I'm ready to take it to the next level and generate something that I can use to install it on my 64-bit production server. I've never done this before, so I'm looking for detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to "publish" this Windows Service that I've written, or make it such that I can take some kind of file (or set of files) and install my service on another machine. I'm looking for a way to do this using Visual Studio 2010. I think the processes are different than in previous versions of Visual Studio.

I am trying to work on a service where I need to export a report into a folder under the service project and email it to the user. The delete the report when complete. The issue I am having is I need to know how to access a folder under the project. I know you can use System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory to get into the bin where the excuting file is but I want to get to a folder is this possible? If not is there a way of creating the folder under the bin directory and accessing it. I can manually create a folder under the bin but didnt really want to do that.

I am building application that will be hosted as a web service. This app takes an employeeID and returns an employee object that contains lots of info regarding the employee. (name, status, full-time/part-time, etc)I want the two existing apps we have (and more to come) to be able to call a method that the web service will have and return the employee object. (also at time this web service that returns the object may have new fields added to it - Pay rate, etc)How would I go about creating a new object from this web service reference in the existing applications.Would I decalre it like Dim Employee as new emp_webservice.employee? And then be able to use this object within the app? Or would the better practice be to also included the same class files? It seems like this would not be the way to go, since if I make a change to that class I then have to make it in all places.

I have a web service that I'd like to include as a project reference inside a windows forms application. (The application will be running on non-networked hardware.) I could simply copy the *.vb files I need into my forms project, but I'd rather not fork the code base.It wasn't hard to include the ASP project in the windows forms solution. However, I can't figure out how to reference it in my forms code.

Currently I am building a Connectship (Shipping Service Provided by UPS) project in VB 10. This is my first project in 10, in the past I have always used 2003. We decided to upgrade due to the connect ship API(.dll) wasn't compatible with 2003.
My current problem is as follows:I've built a program that uses ADOBD, some XML httprequests and a little bit of integration with there API they have. I also built it to use .net Framework 4.0. I can run the project just fine on the machine I built it on (XP SP3), but when I go to run it on the other machine, it acts like it runs but just doesn't do nothing. Basically just starts and stops.. The machine is not the same model as mine, but has all the updates (SP3) & the .net 4.0 framework on it. I've also tried installing the software package that comes with Connectship on the machine, this is how the .dll work but it still doesn't bring anything up so I don't think it's that messing it up.I was also wondering, to run VS 10 projects you should at least have SP3 correct or could you use SP1 also in XP?

I've been busy with work and other bits and bobs and not really had much time for programming... but anyway, I have just written a fairly simple windows service in VB.NET and although I can install it on my PCs/servers using the command line InstallUtil.exe component, this isnt ideal for other people that may need to install it without my assistance.
So basically I just need to know how to get a normal Setup and Deployment VS project to install this service itself... I thought it would be as simple as selecting the service assembly to include in the deployment project and building it, but unfortunately that seems to do naff all. Do I need to use a 'Custom Action' in the setup project (and if so, how/what do I do?)

I have a simple windows Service developed in VS.net 2008 and VB.net. When I install the service using Installutil.exe from the command prompt it is working like a charm.
When I try to add a setup project and set the output and build and install it though it says successfully installed, it is not showing up in the services.
The event log shows that it is successfully installed. I just did check the registry, it did place the assemblies in HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftinstallerassemblies.
But I don't understand why it is not showing up in the services listing. I refreshed and restarted.
