I wrote a quick and dirty web service in VB.NET. And as it always goes, I want to move it to production, but don't want to use the name Service1 for the public class. When I change the name I get an error when trying to reference it. I know there is somewhere else I need to change the class name, something in the code behind but I can't find where it is.

Invoking my method using the built in VS web service test harness works fine. I created another project, in another solution, to test consuming the web service. I added a web reference to my project and set it so I could reference my web service by using "localWS". Then in the page load event of my consuming class I tried to instantiate an object of my web service:
Dim srv As New localWS.MyWS
But there was no "MyWS" type found. There is however a localWS.MyWSSoapClient class. When I use it I can invoke my web methods. My question is, why can't I create a straight up version of MyWS class? In the tutorials I'v read, and in the book I have, example consuming classes for .NET XML web services can instantiate objects of the web service class they are consuming. As a further test I added a new web form to my web service project and from there I was able to instantiate a MyWS class.
When you create a Windows Service, you create a list of the services you want to start. The default is this:
ServicesToRun = New System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase() {New Service}
Can you have multiple instances of the same Service class (that bind to different addresses or ports), like this?
ServicesToRun = New System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase() {New Service("Option1"), New Service("Option2")}
Or will that cause problems? Should we use two different classes instead?
can someone please help me with a textbox? I have created a new class and require this textbox field within a sub in the new class but i get Error1 'TextBox1' is not declared. It may be inaccessible due to its protection level.I have tried MyClass.TextBox1 = Form1.TextBox1 but I get declaration expected.

Public class example
private IAmAObject As IAmAObject
public sub new()

Or like this:

private IAmAObject as new IAmAObject
public sub new()

I always use the first one. It's more type work but I think it's neater. How about you people and is there any real difference between the two?
Occasionally I have to create a windows service for my application. I'm more of a web developer than a windows developer so I have a "Cheat sheet" I use to create the service. Here is what I do:I create my VS 2008 windows service and copy my code from another windows service. I then make the code changes.

We have service developed in Visul Basic .NET. This service utilizes some COM objects provided by SAP to access SAP database. This has been working fine till yesterday. On this Sunday, we upgraded the SAP system, and subsequently all other programs were also re-builded using the new DLL files (for the COM object). We tried doing the same for the service also. But it is not starting now. When started, it shows a message saying service terminated unexpectedly. This is probably due to the fact that it is not able to load the requisite DLL file.

Inside the Server class, declare a method named Shutdown. This method does not return any value. When executed, it will call the Terminate method for each of the Service instances (if any) in the arrServices
array. You should call the Terminate method within a For Each loop that loops through the elements of the arrServices array.
In the Sub Main method, create an instance of the class Server. Set the size of the arrServices array in
your Server instance to contain 2 elements. Create first a WebServer instance and then a DatabaseEngine
instance into this array. Call the Shutdown method from your Server instance.
I have a class library in VB.NET that does a NET-envelope for an USB device driver.There is only one function of that driver that I could not envelope in a traditional class, but I had to put it in a Windows Service as described here:Sharing a class property (field) between applications.The Windows Service works fine, but I have now two projects for my NET-envelope: the one with the class library, the second with the windows service and I do not like the idea to maintain two distinct projects for the same driver.Is it a good practice (or even if possible) to add a windows service class to a normal class library (without creating its own project as described in the vb tutorial)?I know, in any case I should create a separate setup only for the windows service, but in this way I could have together all the classes that envelope my usb device driver in only one project.
View 1 RepliesI have created a service which runs fine on my development PC. It reads XML files data into and Access database. Any errors that might occur are wrote to an eventlog. Like I said all of this works fine on my development PC. I have copied the service EXE on to another PC and run the install and that all works but when the service is fired I get a .Net 2.0 error - system.argumentexception error. I put a delete temp file line of code in to see where the error was occuring and it seems to be when I try to open my database.
Do I need to create a deploy for my service?
I've created a service and ran it successfuly after a valid installation. however when i try to debug the service (not the OnStart function but a timer function i created) i get the following error: "cannot start service from the command line or a debugger.A windows service...").
The actions i made are (im using VS2005):
1. start the service
2. debug->start debugging
3. processes ->attach to process -> [select my service]-> attch

View 4 RepliesI have an app (vb.net) that sues multi threading and have tow problems.
1. The program is used for trading currency markets and mointers prices all day. When a signal is generated it wil place a trade in a new thread. In the new thread it checks to see if a trade is on already and if so it will not place another trade.The problem is it can be too fast and place another trade before the server has processed the first trade. So trade count returns 0. As the system watches 6 accounts I can not just pause the other thread to make sure it has finished before trying ot place another trade.How to i check to make sure the first thread is finished so when i check for trade count it retuns 1?
2.The new thread is inside a class and has a logging class as well. The problem is writing to the text box on the main thread. As the logging thread is created in the new thread it has no access to the textbox. I have tried using invoke but it still does not write to text box as it does not exist in the new thread.How do i reference a form from a class that was created in a new thread?
I am building application that will be hosted as a web service. This app takes an employeeID and returns an employee object that contains lots of info regarding the employee. (name, status, full-time/part-time, etc)I want the two existing apps we have (and more to come) to be able to call a method that the web service will have and return the employee object. (also at time this web service that returns the object may have new fields added to it - Pay rate, etc)How would I go about creating a new object from this web service reference in the existing applications.Would I decalre it like Dim Employee as new emp_webservice.employee? And then be able to use this object within the app? Or would the better practice be to also included the same class files? It seems like this would not be the way to go, since if I make a change to that class I then have to make it in all places.
View 1 RepliesI've created a custom class that I've grown rather dependent on in my coding. I've encapsulated it as it's own "Solution" and use a reference to the class module within the solution on most of my new projects, and that all works fine. It seems slightly clunky to me that my encapsulated class module is packaged with solution-related directories and so forth. For me, this seems to make management and maintenance of these little class modules difficult (renaming them for instance). So now, a few questions:
When you recognize you have a useful class embedded within a solution:
1) What's your method for encapsulation? (is there a template you like?)
2) How do you organize/arrange your code libraries?
3) When, if ever, might you consider using that "Code Snippets Manager" thing in the IDE?
I'm struggling a bit trying to understanding how Visual Studio wraps-up everything in what appears to be a "Solution" umbrella. There doesn't seem to be a lot of write-ups on how to go about organizing your code libraries to work well within this Solution/Project Visual Studio framework.
I have created a class which generates a form in code. I have hooked up the buttons and a text box so that they work. Now, I am trying to hook up the Resize event (and probably will need other events) for this form. How do I do that? If I can understand how to do it for the Resize event, I should be able to apply that to whatever other events I might want to use. I can't just put "Handles frmMyForm.Resize" or "Handles Me.Resize". I get the message "Handles clause requires a WithEvents variable defined in the containing type or one of its base types." This all has been a learning experience.

I have created 3 arrays of buttons for a form which manipulates the value in a combo box or 2 by the name of the button ( buttons named 2 through to about 70 )
This works great but the problem is, now that the buttons are in, I want to be able to change the color of the buttons when another button is clicked
ie. The first bunch of buttons is a list of locations all with unique text.the second bunch of buttons is events that happen, sign on, sign off, beach open and beach closed.
What i want to be able to do is change the color of the button clicked "before" i click sign on, sign off, beach open or beach closed.
I do not know how to reference these buttons in my code as for starters, they are numbers, which is a big no no apparently. Also, even if i change the name from just a number to something like cmdBeach(i) when creating them, i still can't refer back to cmdBeach5 in my code as the button doesn't exist yet
I'm facing problem while reference vb6 dll in .net project. When ever i refer a vb6 dll in .net project the interop dll is created with same version(1.2.0.0). Its creating problem for me as the setup used to deploy the application at client side does not replace the dll if the version is same as before. I want to change the version of the interop dll (created using vb6 dll). I read it cam done using tlbIMP but how to create tlb file for vb6 dll.

I can create the .NET class web project and add a web service (Visual Studio 2005) but I cannot seem to figure out how to reference it. It's easy to reference in a web site (simply address it by name), but apparently in the class library project things are different because I cannot figure out the namespace or reference name.
View 2 RepliesI have a class in a shared library, that I have added references to on both the webservice and the client project. One of the functions in the webservice returns a list of this class.
when I try to cast the return value into a List of the class on the client side, I keep getting an error telling me that a 1-dimensional array of type '<webservice.class>' cannot be converted to type '<sharedlib.clas>'.
The reason that I put the class into the shared library, was because I wanted the webservice to return strongly typed data, but I also have a couple of methods in the class. I dont care about them on the server side, but they are needed on the client side. I figured that this would be the "better" method, since in a shared library it is only declared once for both projects.

Looks good, but I am having a problem calling it from the main project. Here is what I have tried using...

However, it says thatKeyPressEventArgs is a Type and cannot be used as an Expression. I tried 'e' but no go. I am a little ahead of my classes (no pun intended) so I am likely missing something about what I am doing wrong.
I have three comboboxes so I though this would best suit my needs in the interests of writting decent code and not populating each call with repeating code.
