Are DLL files created by creating a Class file in VB ? If not, what are their purpose ? If I were to create a class that held the functions I needed for my program to function, would the class file compile with the assembly as a DLL ? Do I have it all wrong ?

Or like this:

I always use the first one. It's more type work but I think it's neater. How about you people and is there any real difference between the two?
I am creating a class that searches a binary file for a specific customer number. I am using a binary search that keeps on slicing the file in half until I find the customer number while is sorted. Once it finds it I am positioning it at the first instance of that Customer number as there can be multiple records with the same Cus Number.
Now here is my question. I now need to loop through this Customers records and do some data base searches. Since I want to make my class as generic as possible what should I pass back to the calling class? An Array with all their records. If I do this I have to loop twice, once in the class and once when it passes the array bac to the original calling class?

I have VB project and I tried to use PUBLISH feature.It seems to create nicely some kind of setup program, but the setup program does not ask where to copy files (it does not seem to copy filesto target machine "PROGRAM FILES".)Is this setup program somehow different from usual installers?
NOTE: I want that app files are installed to Hard disk( from USB stick source)Is the signing recommended or necessary? My App is pretty simple, its just using access DB + printer api, should I still sign?
I am trying to write a simple application that monitors the COM port and writes the incoming binary data to a file. So, I gathered a File class is provided, but looking at its methods list in the Help page, I see no method for writing individual bytes (and the Write methods seem to close the file after writing).
How can I write a byte array into a file, keep it open and repeat this as necessary?
Ok I know this question has been asked to death but I still have not seen a good answer. I have created an application in VS2010 using VB.NET. In my application I have an error log that is an XML file located in the Public gstLocalErrorLogLocation As String = Application.StartupPath & "ErrorLog"that gets written to in the event of an error so I can trouble shoot application easier. My application also downloads files from our FTP site and puts the files in Public gstLocalDownloadLocation As String = Application.StartupPath & "download"So I have files that get read and written to as well and created and deleted all in the Application.StartupPath which is either "c:Program Files(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File)" or "c:Program Files (x86)(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File)" depending on 32bit or 64bit Windows 7.
After creating the setup I install it on my test machine that have both Windows 7 32bit and 64bit.Everything in the application works great till I have to write to, delete or creat a file in those directories above. I know it is an access issue and the UAC. This will get installed on numerous systems so the options I have seen to change file or folder permission on the computers manually is not an option.What has to happen is after I install the application it just works like when you install it on XP. Some post have suggested that you us a user with administrator privilages or group which is all fine and dandy but the user I have used to test the application has all of that.
So what I am asking is how do you create an application with VS2010 in VB.NET that after creating a setup package and installing on Windows 7 will just work with out "Access to the path c:Program Files(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File) is denied." If I have to install this on 100 Windows 7 computers it has to be a concreate no manually doing anything just install and work like when we installed on XP.
How can I check if an array of labels is created before creating it?
The If Created dos not seem to work with an Array.

View 9 RepliesI've createda vb.net class library where I've defined a number of small classes... nothing complicated, just working with strings, sending emails, etc.In another project, I reference the class library and I'm seemingly able to create an instance ofone of tclasses - intellisense shows me all of the plic properties, methods, etc... all looks perfect. No compile errors at all, nothing b gumdropsand lollipops.When I run the app I'm working on that references the class library, it fails at the point where I'm creating an instance of the class and gives me a vague exception, "System.TypeLoadException".

When I change the name I get an error when trying to reference it. I know there is somewhere else I need to change the class name, something in the code behind but I can't find where it is.

View 1 RepliesI have an app where a user enters information on a ticket and that ticket is saved off to a file on a share.Later on, when the ticket is closed or resolved, the file is deleted.Pretty straightforward.The below code is used to achieve this but, and this is the odd part, I'm finding that sometimes the app does not write the file and other times it will not delete it.I've confirmed that the user is running the latest version, that the tool isn't in off line mode, that all the appropriate criteria are set to true before entering the routines. It works 99% of the time but every so often it doesn't create/delete the file and there are no errors thrown or anything.Going into this section of code, chkOffline is not checked, "GoNoGo" is set to "Go", "Type" is set to "Live" and all fields have been filled out on the form(and vetted).What's more, there are other actions earlier in the app/sub that rely on these same conditions and those actions are getting carried out.[code]
View 2 RepliesI've been having a very odd problem when creating zip files in vb.net. They are ok when I run the code and save the file locally. However, if I run the program via remote desktop, and then save locally, the zip file is corrupted, and will not open (message "cannot open file:it does not appear to be a valid archive").I have tried opening it as a txt file, and found that there is a load of HTML at the bottom of the corrupt version, that the non-corrupt version does not have. Anyone got any idea how this extra HTML might have got there?[code]

View 5 RepliesI have an app (vb.net) that sues multi threading and have tow problems.
1. The program is used for trading currency markets and mointers prices all day. When a signal is generated it wil place a trade in a new thread. In the new thread it checks to see if a trade is on already and if so it will not place another trade.The problem is it can be too fast and place another trade before the server has processed the first trade. So trade count returns 0. As the system watches 6 accounts I can not just pause the other thread to make sure it has finished before trying ot place another trade.How to i check to make sure the first thread is finished so when i check for trade count it retuns 1?
2.The new thread is inside a class and has a logging class as well. The problem is writing to the text box on the main thread. As the logging thread is created in the new thread it has no access to the textbox. I have tried using invoke but it still does not write to text box as it does not exist in the new thread.How do i reference a form from a class that was created in a new thread?
I am need of creating a windows executable that contains a compression of certain other binary files, (executables etc)
It is a basic form with a button, on press of the button, it has to decompress certain binary files( some other executables too) into a certain path, the decompression happens based on some specific conditions and not always., This is the reason I could not use WinZIP to create the EXE.
I create some files in VB.net from a master file but when I try to open the newly created file, Excel starts and nothing is displayed, you can see the outline of Excel and it's menus and nothing else. You can't do anything with excel except close the entire application. [Code] It is upon trying to re-open where it fails, outside of the VBE. I have not had a problem like this using VB6 before, so I am assuming I am doing or not doing something.

View 4 RepliesI've created a custom class that I've grown rather dependent on in my coding. I've encapsulated it as it's own "Solution" and use a reference to the class module within the solution on most of my new projects, and that all works fine. It seems slightly clunky to me that my encapsulated class module is packaged with solution-related directories and so forth. For me, this seems to make management and maintenance of these little class modules difficult (renaming them for instance). So now, a few questions:
When you recognize you have a useful class embedded within a solution:
1) What's your method for encapsulation? (is there a template you like?)
2) How do you organize/arrange your code libraries?
3) When, if ever, might you consider using that "Code Snippets Manager" thing in the IDE?
I'm struggling a bit trying to understanding how Visual Studio wraps-up everything in what appears to be a "Solution" umbrella. There doesn't seem to be a lot of write-ups on how to go about organizing your code libraries to work well within this Solution/Project Visual Studio framework.
