Reliably Check If A User Is Connected Via The LAN?
Mar 6, 2009
I have a requirement that users be connected via the LAN for a small service I am writing. Simply check My.Computer.Network.IsAvailable isn't enough because that will detect any network (e.g. wifi). I need to check whether or the user is LAN connected (and can therefore connect to an Oracle DB)

I want to send some data through a serialport (USB) permanently and got a problem once the USB interface crashes. Sometimes it just happens, but if I ask the PC "serialport2.isopen ()" I will get a TRUE, even though the USB cable was uplugged. How can I check if a connection is still available. CDHolding wasnt working either. I am using VB 2008 Express

Basically I want to have a picturebox which shows an embedded resource if not connected to the internet, and an online image if connected to the internet.I assume this can be done on the form load event, I just don't know the code for it. Basically this is the logic though:
-If 'http:/[url].... is available (therefore connected to internet)
-Picturebox1.Image = http:[url].....
-Else[code].....
How can I code that properly? Would putting it in the form load event work?

I want to develop a Ip messenger app in VB.Net for all the user connected in LAN.I am able to send message to user according to IP Address.I want a functionality to list all the user which are connected(Using) to this app so that they can receive message.How to check whether the person at other location is connected to the app or not.I first used System. Net. NetworkInformation.Ping and PingReply to get whether user is available or not.[code]Also error is returned after delay if I write this code in try catch block. Is there any quick way to check whether there is a listener at a particular given port?

Using the code below i will get all network interfaces wich are enabled and functional on the machine.
Private netIntrfc As NetworkInterface() = NetworkInterface.GetAllNetworkInterfaces()
For i As Integer = 0 To netIntrfc.Length - 1
If netIntrfc(i).OperationalStatus = OperationalStatus.Up Then
[code]....
But my problem is how to get the default one, the one(ethernet adapter) through wich user is connected to internet?I need to change some settings of default(through wich user is connected to internet) adapter. settings i change through registry so i could sample add same settings for each network interface but that could cause problems and makes no point then?
EDITED:for now i have done like code below, so if this can help someone other...
Dim u As UdpClient = New UdpClient(System.Net.Dns.GetHostName, 1)
Dim localAddr As IPAddress = CType(u.Client.LocalEndPoint, IPEndPoint).Address
Private netIntrfc As NetworkInterface() = NetworkInterface.GetAllNetworkInterfaces()

On my program I am trying to make a ToolStripStatusLabel's text change to "connected" if connected to a network and if not connected to a network change the text to " Not Connected" then I don't know how to display a image if connected to a network or not connected. So if the computer is connected to a network I have a image that I would like to be displayed next to the ToolStripStatusLabel. And if not connected to a network, can the program display a different image? I tried this:
My.Computer.Network.IsAvailable=True(ToolStripStatusLabel2.Text "Connected")
My.Computer.Network.IsAvailable=False(ToolStripStatusLabel2.Text "Not Connected")

Is there anyway to reliably know when a large file has completely finished copying to a particular folder? For example, Computer1 copies a large file to Server1Share1. On Server1Share1, I want to do something AFTER the file is done copying, without Computer1 intervention.

I have researched the Internet and found more than a few potential solutions, but I keep getting errors on a Windows 7 machine. Here's the scoop. I have an application written in VB.NET that launches a console application. The console application will run independently of my VB.NET app, so the user can close and restart the VB.NET app and potentially start a second session of the console app from the same installation.

VS2008 SP1, Winforms solution, VB.NET, compiling for x86 and .NET v2 I have about a dozen projects in the solution, with a couple of Windows forms projects and some class libraries. If I rebuild the solution, it clears out and recompiles all the projects, as you'd expect... and then disappears without trace or error message. Since I'm reconnecting to VSS 2005 over HTTP across the internet, it takes all month to start back up with everything loaded, so it's incredibly irritating. The compiled application itself works fine, and normal build and run after changes also works fine.
EDIT: Just to clarify, No add-ins except Refactor! (I know, I guess I ought to try uninstalling it to see if it's that, but it's just too useful! - I will see if there's an update though). And no custom build steps. It's just a vanilla Winforms app, with references between the projects (and some references to COM dlls for interop).

I am working on server side application of FB login.Having converted the example here:[URL]..To VB, and using System.Net.WebRequest.Create to retrieve the responses I am now able to get a text string including the access_token and the expiry time in the following format: access_token=ACCESS&expires=2577
Obviously I can split this into an array and split the parts to get the access_token But, on the FB Developers example above, they do it with PHP like so: $params['access_token'];Is there a VB.net way of doing this? This seems more reliable to me than teh aforementioned splitting idea, ie, if FB change the output format.

I am using Microsoft visual basic 2010 for a asp.net site using c#.I am using the asp.net configuration for user registration. I have a comments form which I want to appear only if a user is logged in.I now there is a toolbox helper thing called Login View which does exactly what I want but as soon as I put a form inside the code won't compile because it cannot find the textbox fields.
I have the following in NewsArticle.aspx:
<asp:LoginView ID="LoginView1" runat="server">
<AnonymousTemplate>
<div class="postcomment">
[code]....
If I take the form out of asp:LoginView it works fine. Inside I get the following:
Error 2 The name 'txtTitle' does not exist in the current context NewsArticle.aspx.cs 59 53 Figmentville
Error 3 The name 'txtComment' does not exist in the current context NewsArticle.aspx.cs 59 68 Figmentville

What's a secure way to check a SQL for a user/pass? Directly connecting to the SQL is not secure at all as the user could see all of the sql data were he to decompile/deobfuscate the program.I'm thinking about using a php page to check, that way they only have access to the php page?
