View 1 RepliesOur company runs Windows Server 2008 R2 and as part of the normal login procedure you type your username and password. IT sets the domain when you get your PC so that is all good. So, when you open IE, the intranet sight detects that you are person XXX YYY and then logs you into the site automatically as the right person.
Now is there any way that I can do the same with an application written in C# or VB.NET. I.e., I would like the user to not have to log in as they have already done so during Windows log in, and then use the application as the individual user. This is for loggin purposes and specific rights for each group.
I have developed a windows application for my company. It is a multi user software and we are using sql 2008 as the database. The sql 2008 is installed in our company server. Within our LAN, there is no problem in accessing the software and its working pretty fine.
Now the problem is, some of the managers need to go out frequently(for business tour and all) and they need access to this software. The software is already installed in their laptops. Is there any way to access the database that is in our company server ???
We have few static IPs with us, is there any way i can use that here (Using NAT in the firewall or something)?
I have a .NET 2.0 *.dll that calls My.Computer.Network.Ping(). The *.dll is then run out of an *.exe via AppDomain.CreateDomain() and Invoke(). The problem is that this works just fine under Windows XP but under Windows 7, I get an exception saying that no network connection is available. I tried the Ping() call out of a small console application under Windows 7 and it works just fine.

Here is my idea so far: I have a bunch of computers connected in a local network. One of them is a MySQL server, one will have a vb.NET program wich will act as a "second server" and the rest will be different clients. What I want to do is that the "second server" will send out some kind of message or network package to some of the clients in the network, and they will execute a code based on what message it is, or what kind of package it is. I'll give you a simple example:
[Code]...
How can I map a network drive over a Windows Service. What I did until now.
Using the Shell command. -> not working.
vb.net
Shell("net use \" & My.Settings.ParaRootPath & " " & My.Settings.ParaPasswordHTTPS & " " & "/user:" & My.Settings.ParaLoginHTTPS)
Using a System.Diagnostics.Process object. -> not working
vb.net
ShellExecute As New System.Diagnostics.Process
ShellExecute.StartInfo.RedirectStandardOutput = True
ShellExecute.StartInfo.FileName = "cmd.exe"
[Code].....
If I run the application as normal application, it is working correctly.
Im able to access the internet on my Phone. I made a small app that lets me get to my database hosted by Godaddy. The problem is, unless I have my phone plugged into my computer it says Im not connected to the network. I can show my code if needed, but that has nothing to do with it because the application works fine as long as its hooked to my computer. Any idea on establishing a connection I guess? Im not sure why its not since Im able to access the internet, Im not sure why connecting to the computer makes it work.
View 1 RepliesI have an application that resides on a network drive. When the program runs from an XP machine on the desktop or over the network the program works for any user. When it runs from Win 7 on the desktop it works for everyone, but when it runs from Win 7 over the network it fails for users with fewer permissions.Below is the code.It fails on the last line "Dim searchResult As SearchResult = directorySearcher.FindOne"..[code]Can anyone tell me what is missing in the network permissions?
View 3 RepliesI'm trying to make a quick app that changes a few settings on PC which I need to be able to run a piece of software and I want these services on when I'm not using it.I've managed to get the Windows Services I need to act as I want but can't find a way of programmatically turning off Windows Network Discovery.
View 1 RepliesBasically, if you go to Start and click Computer and then click on the Network link on the left hand side, you'll notice on the right hand side several categories, one of which is titled "Network Infrustructure", in that category, my router is listed, and in my case, it is "LINKSYS WAG160N Wireless-N ADSL2+ Gateway" and when you right-click and select properties, it lists basic info such as internal/gateway IP address, on mine it is "192.168.1.1" I would like to know how to retreive this information in code, preferably a Windows API so that i can call it using a legacy VB6 app. Also, even if you just know a .NET version or a Delphi version, please do list that as well as i can code in both. However, the answer i'm ultimately seeking is a method to access this via VB6 so that would probably be a WinAPI call (will upvote & select this as answer), however, other methods are also welcome incase i can't find a legacy method (i will upvote these).
View 3 RepliesI have a program where I need to be able to access files from an administrative share on a remote machine where the username is administrator and there is no password. I want to be able to access these files without the user getting prompted to input the username and password.
I have searched around and found some references to WMI - but as far as I can tell, WMI is mainly for managing the remote machine and not necessarily for file access (?). Also, some information gathered about WMI leads me to believe that it may be disabled on some machines or not installed on others (?). Since this program is meant to go out to a diverse customer base, I need to make sure that I cover as many angles as possible to ensure this program will run on as many machines as possible.
I am working on a backup utility for use with the mysql db. Because I need the actual backup to run regardless of if a user is logged on or not, I created the backup engine in a windows service.
Basically the backup engine checks to see if a backup job is scheduled to be run and if it is, it kicks off a mysqldump to do the backup. For sake of performance I am saving all backup jobs to the local c: drive then doing a file copy to the user defined destination.
Everything works fine except for the file copy. If the user selects a local resource to the computer it works fine. However, if a network drive is selected, I get an error that it cannot find the path.
I started thinking about it and believe this is expected since the backup engine is probably oblivious to whatever mapped drives that particular user has, i.e. the mapping process is done when someone logs in and my app is running at a lower level.
I started doing some research on this problem and found that some people are saying that windows services are oblivious of networks all together. This seemed a little odd to me so I thought I would bring the issue here.
Is a windows service truely unaware of network activity? How can I change the program to move the completed backups over to a network drive?
I have an application in vb.net that runs over a network. Actually shortcut of the exe file is shared over LAN, so databases remain on one computer where the application has been installed. Everything works great except one thing. The logo of this application is saved in a database, that reports can pick to load picture. The logo file is chosen by the user, using OpenFileDialog and then saved in database. It is saved like D: Picturesfilename. jpg When I run the application from network (using shortcut that we have made to the main exe file), it given error on D:Picturesfilename.jpg because this doe not exits in the system that is running the shortcut. How to save the logo path in a way that it always finds it in application directory, when run over the network.
View 2 RepliesHow difficult would it be to have my application check for user authorization over a network?
If I have a php server, each time someone starts my application it should connect to the server and check the users computer name against a list of authorized computers, possibly using MySQL.
I want to develop an accounting software for a mini Super-Store, this program will be able to run on a network with a central database; in other words a network application. I have not used sql sever before neither have I written any application that will run on a network.
View 7 RepliesI have a treeview control which is being used to browse various folder on the users system drive. It can also be set up to connect network folders using UNC paths e.g "serverfiles". At the moment I'm getting a list of Directories by using My.Computer.FileSystem.GetDirectories however this obviously fails when the folder is password protected.
Is there a way that I can get Windows to open the credentials dialog as you would see in Windows Explorer and deal with the credentials side so then the user name & password is cached as well?
I have to schedule an exe file as windows service. The exe file should be triggered when user connects to the pariticular net work for ex: company network.User can connect/disconnect to the company n/w "n" number of times to the network in a day. so every time when user connects to the network theservice should run the exe file.
View 1 RepliesI have a client-side app which I am working on. As I start to enhance the app, I am starting to wonder whether or not I should be building a network side app instead. My app in its current form sits on the client side and generates some text and XML files which are stored locally on the client side. The user reads/write to these files. However, I want to start working with SQL AND the processing time of my app is starting to consume resources (i.e. time and CPU) on the client side.
Can someone provide me with some highl level feedback on what one would do to make their client-side app a network app that multiple users would have access to. I realize more detail would need to be provided in order to provide thorough answer. However at this point, I really just want to understand how a network app would differ from a client app from a programminga and deployment perspective. This is not necessarily a VB question. Howevever since I am working in VB I though I would start in this forum. Feel free to move to the appropriate forum if need be.
I have a VB2008 application that runs off a server. Users connect to the application via shortcut.
[code...]
For what it's worth, the application is targeting .NET 2.0 Framework on both the development side and package install side.
The illustration below is more for my sake than yours, but should help me explain the problem.
User A and B work just fine, but when User C and User D attempt to use the program via shortcut9(same as User A and B) the error below is displayed.
[code...]
what I can do to allow User C and D to use the application?
On the earlier version of VB.net 2003, I could run a wizard to give full trust to a .Net application on the network. With VB.net 2008, there is no longer a wizard to do this. I did some Googling and most of the references I find refer to using Caspol for .Net 2.0. That doesn't seem to be an option .net 3.5 (I can't find Caspol in the framework folder). Does anyone know how to do this for VB.net 2008?
View 2 RepliesWe are using a web browser to show a pdf file located in a folder on the network. The code looks like this:
System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser.Navigate(New Uri("\hostpath ofile.pdf"))
This works fine, but now I have to use a specific user to access this file and I don't know how to include the user name, password and domain in the URI. Is it posible to add user credentials to the URI? Can I use another variant of Navigate method to accomplish this?
Any simple way of automatically updating a newer version of my application from a network share. Everything I have read pertains to an update from a web site. This is possibly a simple thing to do but as I have 6-8 users using the application I have to email them all stating there is a new version on the share and for them to copy and overwrite the existing application executable in the program filesapp directory. If this could be done on launching the program within the splash screen that would be fantastic.

View 7 RepliesI am starting a new project in VB, a card game modelled to be similar to a real card game.
I have the majority of the program planned out and have even started coding parts of it; my problem comes with the networking. This is a real-time card game (not turn-based) and I want to be able to play with real people (family mostly, so over LAN is what I'm after).
I have tried searching for code samples but I everything I have found seems more complicated than I feel is required for the task, introducing a lot of new concepts and not explaining them.
What I'm after is a simple way to exchange the information in real-time, I don't care so much for efficiency (at the moment) just ease of use - though if I need to wade through a heap of documentation I will. A perfect answer would tell me what the names of some of the controls/methods that would be appropriate are, even if it just re-affirms a bit of the complexity, you do not have to detail anything if you don't want to I just feel a bit at loss as to what exactly it is I am looking for!
I have my vbnet application with sql server express designed for individual desktop pc. Now I want to have it work on a network.
1_ how can I make my customer to install sql express and the Database on the server and enable the network protocols seamlessly? dont want to have my customer configuring sql expess manually. 2_ how can I have my client software to look for the sql express and connect to it in a seamless way??
Can I avoid the customer to enter configuration data?

Lately our network is having some speed issues at certain times of day, so what I'd like to do is make a little app that will test the network speed at certain intervals, like once an hour between certain servers etc and then write the results to a text file. Is VB 2008 cable of doing something like this? I thought of maybe copying a 500mb file from 1 place to another and somehow record the average transfer rate of that file, but I am not exactly sure about how to record the transfer speed.
