I'm running into an issue with my application. If the laptop is just turned on and a user opens the application, the application attempts to hit a SQL server to do some work. The issue is that sometimes the SQL Server process hasn't started yet (slow laptop).
What is the preferred method for checking if this is running.
Do I check for it like a normal process?
Do I attempt to make a connection via ADO.NET and catch the error?
I'm trying to make an RTD server unicode compliant. It is written in VB .NET 2003, and to my understanding, Unicode characters are used internally, so no conversion should be required, right?
When I run this on an English Windows xp machine, it works fine, but when testing on a machine with a Portuguese version of Windows 7, a couple of the RTD server's dialog boxes will not open in the add-in section of Excel. Does anyone have an idea why this would happen in Windows 7 Portuguese?
I use VB.NET for a Windows application.
How can I find out if the application is now running on a server or client (programmatically)?
I have a VB 2005 application running on Terminal Server and I need the IP address, clientname and username from the client system.

1. load gridview from an uploaded excel file (this would probably be about 300 records or so)
2. compare manufacturer, model and serial No to my MS SQL database (about 20K records) to see if there is a match.[code]is there a better way to find a match between the two?
I Need vb.net sample code to run SQL Server Report.
- Would be cool if you could provide:
-vb.net code
- sample showing use of parameters
- switching data sources
- setting credentials
- running a local report using a rdl file ie report file
- running a remote report using reporting services server
I have a windows service written in .net framework 2.0. This service installs and runs perfectly fine on both XP and windows server 2003.We have a new 2008 box that we are migrating over to, so need to get this windows service up and running. When i try to 'start' the windows service on the 2008 machine, i get "Windows could not start the <service> service on local computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."I have searched everywhere looking for an answer, and all I could find was a fix attributed to .net framework 1.1 for this same error. That; however, is not applicable here, as the service was written in 2.0.
View 3 RepliesI am using Visaul Studio 2010 to build a Windows Forms application to maintain a table in an SQL Server 2008 database. The table is named CASHBOOK and here are the further details:
DATE | DESCRIPTION | DEBIT | CREDIT | BALANCE
--------|----------------|---------|-----------|---------
1/1/2011| CASH BALANCE | | | 5000
1/1/2011| SALES | 2500 | | 7500
2/1/2011| PURCHASE | | 3000 | 4500
2/1/2011| RENT | | 4000 | 500
2/1/2011| SALES | 5000 | | 5500
I can use CASHBOOKTABLEADAPTER.INSERT(...) to insert appropriately, but my problem is how do I update the BALANCE column?
I'm looking for a way to get details of the name and status of all services running on a service. I did use the following code:
Public Sub GetServices()
Dim localServices As ServiceController() = ServiceController.GetServices()
For Each service As ServiceController In localServices
If Not String.IsNullOrEmpty(service.DisplayName) Then
dictservice(service.DisplayName) = New Service(service.DisplayName, service.ServiceName, service.Status.ToString)
End If
Next
End Sub
However, since I have packaged up my project as a WCF service, the System.ServiceProcess namespace I used cannot be used: Is there any other way I can retrieve the same details? Possibly through WMI?
I am using creating a server/client style program, and it uses tcp connections. Now, the server is like this, but it will only listen until it has received its one request. My issue lies in the fact that it only listens till it receives the one message, then closes. The bigger issue, though, is the lag, it will not let me interact with the form in any way until it closes the connection. Is there a way to make it "passively" listen, for lack of a better word? I do not want it to take up tons of cpu.
View 2 RepliesI am writing a service to get a count from a table on an SQL server. THe SQL box is in the same domain, and the service is runnign under the same account as the SQL box.
The box service is running on is Win 2008 in the domain. The interesting thing is that when I use this same code and run a normal EXE on that server, it runs no issues. In a service it crashe with:[code...]
im currently working with an SQL Server 2008 database and im trying to change values in the database usign visual basic. The following code runs correctly and I have tested changing passwords and have been able to logoff and then back on again using the new password. The problem i am facing is that as soon as the application exits the database returns to its origional values so the next time i run the program the passwords are back to the old values.

How would i check a game server is running?
View 2 Repliesok so i have two "programs" one is a server and the other is a client (a little live chat). i dont want to keep my computer on for it to run the server so i wanted to somehow run it on my online server. is this possible?
View 3 Repliesfor some reason this works perfectly, when i do it in debug mode it adds the tasks to stagingtable, and then transfers none duplicates to the regular table. However, when i upload it to the server it does not work.

bcp.ColumnMappings.Add(0, 1)

I have a Windows Forms application created in VS2005 which runs fine on the user desktop but when running in Terminal Server session it frequently locks up when the remote desktop window is minimised and the user is working locally. There is plenty of RAM on the server so this is not an issue, the only solution so far has been to force the user session to log off on the Terminal Server and then reconnect.
View 14 RepliesI know i can run webforms and mvc views in seperate files, but i want to run the web server control output and events in/on the mvc view page, however, i keep getting this compiler error:
Line 38: <CuteWebUI:Uploader ID="UploadPic" runat="server" UploadType="IFrame"
Line 39: FileTooLargeMsg="{0} cannot be uploaded! File size ({1}) is too large. The maximum file size allowed is set to: {2}."
Line 40: TempDirectory="~/UserData/Images/TemporaryImages" UploadingMsg="Uploading..."

i don't know what else do do, it just wont recognize the control name when im writing the event signature, right after the "handles" keyword, comes the server control name and then a dot, and then the event name, but as events its just giving me "Me", "MyBase" and "MyClass" options to run events for... doesn't let me access "FileUpload.OnFileUploaded" which is the control name & event name i want to write the sub routine method declaration (and subsequently method) and signature for.
I have a running program which is installed in the server side and this program is running 24hrs a day. Now I made some enhncements on this program and would like to publish it. I tried to publish first in my local disk but after publishing Im having some errors "Critical error: Required processing file is missing" after clicking the setup.exe file. Now Im thinking of publishing this directly to my server. If I publish it directly to my server would it disrupt the running program? is it safe to do that? or is there something that I need to do it first?
View 6 RepliesI've developed a VB.NET application with Visual Studio 2008. The application communicates with SQL Server and processes a text file.
My question is about performance. While I run it from Visual Studio 2008, it takes 3 sec to complete. The same is when I run the executable created by the Setup Wizard on my desktop (Windows XP sp 3). But if I run the executable installed on a Windows 2003 Server, it takes 15 sec to complete! What could be the reason of degrading performance on the server vs. the desktop? The .Net framework 3.5 SP1 is installed both on the desktop and the server.
I've been researching for days and I've gotten to the point where my WCF service creates an Access object via com/interop.I've ran the Open Current Database call for the Access object without an error but Application.CurrentDB is still nothing/null. If the CurrentDB is nothing then I surely can't call Application.Run "myFunction" I realize WCF services aren't meant to be user interactive, but it's a long story why I'm trying to go this route. Basically I need to have a proof of concept ready sooner rather than later and the alternative (correct) route involves the complete re-writing of a large complex access VBA application. It's not a permissions issue, I have the IIS user names added to the security tab. What I really need is a way to set Environment.UserInteractive to true so my WCF service can create an instance of Access on my server machine, run the VBA functions, close out, return true.I'm using VS 2010 for the WCF, IIS 7 for my server, Access 2010 for the VBA application.

I wanted to know what are the risks of opening up a socket server on a specified port? Right now I have it limited to only accept requests from 1 specific IP to that port and all the other ones get rejected (using the windows firewall), is there a way to implement an authentication or anything else so I can allow it to be accessed from any IP worldwide yet have it secured?
View 1 RepliesI have a Class called SocketSvr which handles an asynchronous socket server. It is called via the BackgroundWorker from my main form. Basically, I just want it to display my socket data information inside a textbox in the main form, and have a server start/stop button available on the main form to do those things.
Here is the code from Form1.vb:
Public Class Form1
Dim WithEvents Socketsvr As New SocketSvr
Private Sub ToggleServerButton_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, _

I am uncertain how to properly shut down requests from the client when the StopServer() function is run. In the code above, I place a cancellation queue for the background process. The funny thing is that once StopServer() is run, it will accept one more connection, then stop accepting thereafter. If I remove the following line from the code above:
listener.SetSocketOption(SocketOptionLevel.Socket, SocketOptionName.ReuseAddress, 1)
-- it crashes when I attempt to start the server a second time (complaining that I cannot reuse the socket, obviously) My guess is that I need to add something to the bw.CancellationPending call on the background worker?
i have 2 queries in vb.net with an if clause -
if x=0 then
insert into table1
else
update table1
both queries have 5 fields. now what i want to do is after this insert or update takes place, i need to look at this inserted/updated record and compare it with another table (table2). Especially for update, i have 5 fields in both tables. if any of the 5 fields dont match with table2, then i insert a new record in table 2 which is the updated record in table 1.
I am asked to write a front end program in VB 2005 (that will run in client computers which running on Win XP) to access an existing MySQL database running in Linux. It is not my preferred choice, but the user have the database and server working just as he wants it, and do not wish to change, at the same time I do not wish to change programming language. Is that even possible? Can we actually write VB 2005 programs that will run in client computers complete with NET framework 2.0 to access a Linux operating database?
View 4 RepliesI have an application that will not load unless my local SQL Server is running on an Vista Home Premium machine. This started after a .Net 1 to .Net 4 conversion. I am using a sub main sub that is not being called (msgbox is not fired when entering the app), however, I see the app through taskmgr with increasing memory usage, but then the app is removed from the list. By design, if the program cannot locate a SQL Server a form pops up with a connection box to locate the SQL Server for the app. How it determines if it has a valid connection is the program looks for a connection string in the registry, then attempts to connect to it, however, none of this code executes because of the failure to enter into the sub main. The two machines I have tried the 32 bit app on
XP Pro: Failed / Using SQL Server 2008 Express
Windows 2003 Server: Works / Using SQL Server 2008 Developer
Both machines have .Net 4 Client Profile with Extended?
I am building a Setup project for a Web system using Visual Studio 2008. I upgraded my development machine from Windows Xp to Windows 7. The problem started with Windows 7. Whenever I try to build I get the above error. I ve tried several solutions given online but I ve failed to get a solution. When I transfer the system to a machine running Windows Xp or Windows 2003 Server it builds successfuly.
