I'm confused a bit. I need to open a file that another program regular reads and writes. I want to make sure that I open the program in such a way that it will not harm the other programs access in any way. My program can handle any errors created by the other program changing the file out from under me - I just need to make sure that when I open the file the other program can continue to read, write, delete, etc without even knowing about my program. FYI this is simply a weather application where the "other" program is updating a table file with current weather data - my program reads that data and sends it to another application... Here is the code I am using:
I am noticing that sometimes when I read ProcessName the Process has already finished. Sometimes it hasn't finished yet and reading the ProcessName works. I would like to find out how I can consistently read the ProcessName from a process no matter if it takes a long time or a short time to run. Is there some event I should be in? or some trick? When I read it at the wrong time I get:
System.InvalidOperationException: Process has exited, so the requested information is not available. at System.Diagnostics.Process.EnsureState(State state) at System.Diagnostics.Process.get_ProcessName()
I've always felt like SecureString was a little odd, but assumed most of my issues with it were due to security problems I don't understand. Today I decided to sit down and teach myself about it, but I've hit what seems like a fatal snag.
The scenario I envision is "user enters password into text box, that password is hashed and compared to a stored hash". At first I was worried that the text box contained the string, but then I realized you could roll a custom text box that uses SecureString as its store. Cool. It's the "that password is hashed and compared..." part that is giving me trouble. [code]...
I've been looking for a VB.net code that safely remove USB drive which I know it drive letter. I couldn't find anything that works on MS VB Express 2008. I always get errors. Anyway this article looks what am looking for [URL] However, it is not in VB and i have no about the code. I found a conversion at [URL] if not with code, you lead me to achieve the USB ejecting at least.
I have a VS 2008 .NET application which connects to many tables within a SQL 2005 database in order to fill controls using multiple DataSets and TableAdapters.how to appropriately change the database connection within my Visual Studio .NET 2008 application in a manner that will provent having to modify the datasets and tableadapters. Will changing the connectionstring shown in the DataSet/TableAdapters properties render them unusable? The tables within the production database are identical to the tables in the development database.
Recently there was a request about sending bulk email which was building a potentially dangerous collection of answers which could lead to someone easily creating a spam engine. While there are legitimate reasons to send bulk email, one must be sure to follow all the applicable rules. This means following RFC 2821 and forming properly crafted email messages. In the US, it also means complying with fedral law regarding the sending of unsolicited email (express permission must be captured through direct user initiation e.g. user's must choose to check the box to receive your email), and that means including a removal instruction as well as valid contact information.
To that end, here is an example program for sending a mass email to a list of recipient addresses located in a database. The code only cares about recieving an array of DataRow objects, so any database for which you can fill a DataTable will work.To run this example, simply place a Button on a Form and paste in the following code:
Option Strict On ''' <summary> ''' Example of safely sending bulk emails ''' </summary>
Can I safely modify -I mean: remove and re-add on a different index position- any item that I iterate over using a For Each loop in VB? We are talking about the VB Microsoft.VisualBasic.Collection class. And if yes: Is this by design, or an implementational detail, that I am building upon then?
I've written a simple program to hide the taskbar clock and close upon load and I've read a lot of different articles on how to close a program correctly and read a multitude of different answers so I thought I'd just post the code and see if it is written cleanly. Also, I am in the process of trying to get the taskbar to refresh after the hide code has ran and how to refresh it would be great too but is not the main question of this article. I'm using Visual Studio 2008 using the Visual Basic Development settings and I have vista 64-bit. Here's the code:
I have looked everywhere on this but do not know anyone who have accomplished it so far that is how to read values from a grib (gridded binary) file. Below is a link for Environment Canada where they store the forecast values in grib format. These file can be opened using tools like wget but is nowhere close in reading the data values from the file itself.url...
I currently have a program that I made which opens other apps packaged with an installer. I have set the installer to install everything to the Program Files folder. However, not all computers have a C: hard drive. I have a way in which they can enter their drive letter in one form then in the next form it remembers the drive and will take them to the program. The problem is my program stores the drive letter in an xml file. On the startup of the program it looks in the xml file to find the drive letter, if there is no drive letter the form opens then lets the user set his drive letter. The xml file is stored in the folder "Math Wizard" in the Program Files folder. But if not all

Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click Dim FileReader As StreamReader
Why would a .sln solution file open and appear empty in Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express - i.e. no windows showing projects and code files etc. When I inspect the file in a text editor, it contains references to vbproj files (which are present) which indicate that it should not appear as empty. No error messages are reported when the file is opened.
I would like to open the excel file after create the excel file. The creating file function is done, but the system unable to open the excel file. My coding as below:

I need to write data to a file, preferably in binary format, but I am unaccustomed with the concept. Where's the easiest place to get the basics? I could come here with a specific need, but I'm at the point right now where I am more willing to work within the confines of keeping it simple.
Here's what I know: 1. how to open a new file 2. how to specify the record length 3. how to close the file
Some specific questions:
Does the record length have to be constant throughout the file?
Can I read the nth record without reading the whole file?
I've noticed that when you click on a web page in Windows Explorer, or open a file in general, and the default application to open it is internet explorer, ie opens and opens the file. However, when I tried this on my Web Browser it opened, but ignored the file and went on its usual routine. How can I get my Web Browser to open and open the file that was clicked on in explorer?
I saved a file with the extension .doc. I use the RichText to write and save the text. I did not set any encoding type when I saved it. When I tried to open the file in the Richtextbox again, I got all the formatting characters in the RTF file. How do I correct this? How do I open and re-open a .doc file in the Rich Text box control without the formatting showing up in the box with the document contents?

I want to perform two hashing operations concurrently on a single file, without reading the file twice. Is there some way to share the FileStream between two synchronized hashing threads? For example:
Dim Stream As New IO.FileStream("...", IO.FileMode.Open) Dim HashA, HashB As Byte() Dim A = New System.Threading.Thread(Sub()
[code]....
Maybe some way of caching a stream? Trouble is, I don't want the entire file in memory at once (it could be many gigabytes in size) and I don't want the file read more than once, due to speed issues. I want the file cached only sufficiently to ensure that both threads can work. For example, suppose at some point in time, thread A had read 100k of the file, but thread B had only read 20k of the file. The portion of the file between 20k and 100k should be cached; but then progressively forgotten as thread B catches up. Then again, if thread B is too slow, we might still end up with hundreds of megabytes being cached.Maybe thread A should be made to wait while thread B catches up. Maybe the ReadByte() function of the stream should block for a while if one of the threads is too far behind?
friend of mine has no HTML knowledge so I'm attempting to write a program that replaces certain parts of a html file to suit his needs.I've edited the HTML file and marked certain parts with "tags" like this:
#IMAGEURL1# I have a textbox where he can copy + paste an image URL and hopefully the #IMAGEURL1# is replaced with the contents of the textbox.
So can someone please enlighten me to-as how to open a HTML file (there's no textbox to display the contents just yet, I'll add one if needed), find the specified text and then replace it with whats in a textbox.
I am trying to import a TAB (NOt comma) delimited text file into a DataGridView. The following code works fine if I have a comma separated file. All I have to do is change the FMT to "Delimited".It just does not work with FMT=TabDelimited. All columns are read into single datatable column. The text file is ANSI text and I have double checked to make sure Tabs are tabs and not spaces, even exported a sample Tab Delimited file from Excel. Can this even be done using Text Driver? [code]
