I am making a exe application and i am using mysql as my database. So the thing is, when i change to a new computer, i need to change the file path for the database connection string to that computer.
like below:
Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=----------SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=Flexlink;" & "Integrated Security=SSPI;"
i need to change the data source = --------------- SQLEXPRESS to the computer name that i am using for my project.
May i ask is there any method such that the user dont have to go in to the source code to change the computer's name like those normal installer?
Just install and the application will run according like any exe file that we buy.

I just completed building an application that reads and writes to a MS Access database located on a network drive. It works great on the computer that I created it on, but when I try to run it on another computer it fails to initialize. I'm not sure if there's a setting in the database I need to change,

I've been working on a piece of software for a few weeks now and I've got to the point where I'm publishing it and testing it on other computers, namely my colleague's. We're both working on the same network and have similar permissions for our accounts, but for some reason the application will launch on my account but not his.
We've tried using the same computer and just changing accounts, but that won't work either; he still isn't able to launch the published application.
I receive the standard "[x] has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." message.
What is baffling me is that we've tried previous versions on his computer and they worked just fine. I can't think of any changes that I've made that would suddenly stop the application from running.
A few extra pieces of information: the application has a splashscreen, which displays for a few seconds before the error message crops up. In this time, the program is supposed to check if certain files and directories exist and, if not, create them. It also changes file attributes. These files exist in a directory we are both able to access and both have permissions to change. It also changes and sets some variables within the program itself, but I don't see that being an issue. It is able to catch exceptions of type IOException and InvalidOperationException (which was being thrown when a computer didn't have access to the intranet).

I have an VB.NET 2010 application using framework 4 that has issues with reading and writing to cells using command similar to 'RequiredSoftwareVersion = EmployeesSheet.Cells(37, 4).value'. The big thing is I can open/close the workbook, select which worksheet in the workbook. On some computers it works fine, on others I get a pop-up that asks if you want details, continune, quit. All the computers have Office 2007 installed.

I have recently finished a console application and deployed it to several computers on our network for testing. As it is just an EXE a copied to the hard drives of selected computers for now. When the app is launched it writes info to an sql DB so I always know which computers it is on.
During the past few weeks I have modified this app at least 6 times (improvements, adjustments, etc)
It is a paint to keep going back to the computers to update it with the new version, and getting mixed up which version i am on - LOL I am looking for advice on how I would go about doing this automatically, for example, it would be cool if I just had to put an updated file in a repositry and clients would use this to update.
In Visual Studio, when I view the properties of my application>assembly information - I can set a file version. Is it possible to extract this info and store it in a variable? I would like to dump the in my DB. Also I could then possibly compare the file version of the launched app against an updated file in a network share folder.

Any simple way of automatically updating a newer version of my application from a network share. Everything I have read pertains to an update from a web site. This is possibly a simple thing to do but as I have 6-8 users using the application I have to email them all stating there is a new version on the share and for them to copy and overwrite the existing application executable in the program filesapp directory. If this could be done on launching the program within the splash screen that would be fantastic.

I'm trying to build a small application that will automatically visit a few websites. The list of the websites I want to be stored inside a txt file like:
website1.com
website2.com
website3.com
and when I press the "Start" button, my application will open the websites from the txt file, one by one with a delay of 10 or more seconds before loading the next website, in a webbrowser control.

I am trying to build a self-updating .NET application that will run in an environment with limited user accounts. No admin rights here. The application must run on Vista and XP, and probably Win 7 when it comes out.An X-copy deployment would be fine. I would prefer NOT to use click-once.So far I have tried a system where the application checks a manifest and downloads updated binaries, which worked great in development, but not so much when the app was installed.Vista refuses to to let me copy files to Program Files. After that, I tried downloading an updated .msi, which works except that the MSI has a UAC prompt -- no go if the user does not have an account with local admin privileges.
running the program in AppData and using the x-copy method might work, but I have not seen anyone say that they have tried it and it did work. Will that work for an account without admin rights? Can anyone vouch for this method before I start writing more code?

I use VB 2005 Express @ home for developing stuff. I am wondering if anyone knows how to run a script automatically after building my application. When I click build I want it to compile my InnoSetup installer and also zip up my executable + readme.txt file into AppName-version.zip. Right now I manually do it, and it's not that big of a deal, but if I am just wondering if it's possible. I think I can do it with full VS, so I will check it at work, but I am wondering if I can write a plugin or something if VB2k5X doesn't have an option do it already built in.

I developed a chat application with an attendant chat server. Everything is working fine. The issue now is the fact that whenever the chat server goes down (for instance, the server system shuts down as a result of power failure or some other problem), by the time the server system come back on, the chat server would have to be restarted manually.
I believe (and I know) it is more appropriate for the chat server application to restart itself when the computer comes back on (and of course regardless of who is logged in and of course, even before anyone logs in). I have a batch file that executes the chat server. My attempt was to create a windows service that start automatically and runs this batch file using a Network Service account on the server system. Although, I'm having a hard time with this (temporarily), I would love to ask if there are any alternatives to using a windows service.

I have created a little application to move some files around and put them into a database. This is working well except that the application needs a timeout. If my app has not completed the task within 2 hours it re opens and locks out everything. I need to say that if my application has been open for 2 hours close it. One thought was can you set a time out in an application.

In VB.NET, you can set focus to an external application using
AppActivate("Windows Name")
or
AppActivate(processID As Integer)
Now this works fine if you do for example:
Dim intNotePad As Integer = Shell("C:WINNTNotepad.exe",
AppWinStyle.MinimizedNoFocus)
AppActivate(intNotePad)
But when I do:
For Each theprocess As Process In processlist
If InStr(theprocess.ProcessName, "DWG") Then
strProcessList += String.Format("Process: {0} ID: {1}", theprocess.ProcessName, theprocess.Id) + vbCrLf
AppActivate(theprocess.ID)
[code]....
then it doesn't find the window, even if it's open and even if it finds the window using the window title. But I need it by process ID.How can I do that?I need it to set focus on a 3rd party installer in a windows installer setup project.

I have an application that has two states based on the value of a Boolean variable: a read_only=true state and read_only=false state. The value of this state is stored in an external settings file. My application has a feature called deploy that generates a copy of itself in the same folder with the read_only=true state. But, the read_only variable value is stored in an external file so now both files will be in the read_only=true state. What I want to do is make one of them(the original one) always be read_only = false and the other read_only=true
