A year or so back I made a database management program in vb.net and now its out dated and i want to start from scratch, since I wasn't very good at vb.net at that time most of it is hacked together in one single file.Now i want some tips in making these kind of programs.I've heard of something called a data access layer. What is it and Should I use It ? Is it a Class or interface (I don't know what interfaces do yet but they should be to hard)?

I need to make a small programm for ticketing on a parking for a small hotel.So i have 2 Printers pariking In (for delivery of the tickets) and 2 Readers PArking Out.Both Printers and REaders are working Serial.So i need to poll the serial ports of the printers and readers every second.The data is stored on a SQL database so i need to read and write in the database.Can i do this with 1 PC and 1 programm or 1 PC and 4 programms that are runnning at the same time ?

I place this in text changed event and I have a problem implementing it, because the date conversion will not take place until the data is loaded. The second part works but not the first(Date) part.
I can create a button and use its click event to format the text boxes just fine, however i wanted the text boxes to be formatted on the fly . The problem is no matter where i call the function the date conversion wont work.
I coded a small application in VB Express 2010 and I wish any one could provide for me some code on how to save personal settings from an options form so that the end user don't have to keep making their personal choices every time that start my application that I created.
Personally I don't have a clue on how to accomplish this feature with in VB Express 2010.
I used check boxes and radio buttons in the options section on a form for the end users choices.
I am planning to write a recipe storage program for personal use. I know what I want to do, but I am not perfectly clear on the most efficient way to do it. I am using SQL server 2005 and I am comfortable writing stored procedures. This is one of my first vb.net projects and I am still getting comfortable with ADO.net.What I want to do is create a form that can handle an list of ingredients of an unknown number.
The form will also accept a cooking procedure of an unknown number of steps. Each step will be written by the user into Rich Text boxes (vb 6 term?)I am planning to use combo boxes to select ingredients from a list or add new ingredients as needed. I also want to eliminate duplicates in the ingredients table of the sql 2005 db. I am looking for the most efficient method to save all the parts of a recipe to the database. saving a recipe will require dozens of database hits and therefore be unacceptably slow.
I'm a newbie in visual basic. I'm doing a login system. I'm done with the GUI. but for the programming part, I want to know where to store new user's information along with the username and password. I've done research. seems like it has something to do with database. p/s: I'm looking for high security in storing data to prevent hacking.

I'm have a data management program. I've fixed everything in it, except when I run my Insert or update commands on a different computer I've installed it on, JIT tells me that the collection has be modified, it then gives me the option to continue or quit. I know it's been modified, the user knows it's been modified, how do I get rid of that?

I have FTP things along time ago but not asp just basic stuff. I have read about xcopy,copy project, I have XP and IE that I can FTP from. I also have to put a database up from SQL Managment Studio. I need to know HOW WHAT WHEN WHERE on how to do this right. This is an interactive site that I made, very similar to a Forum like this site. Do I just upload the dll.
I don't want my source code available for everyone to see, do I have to obfucate it if I am using [url] as a host. The site can't really be down all the time, I have read that I could work on thesite while it is up but I believe I will have to have all the source files up and open.

View 4 RepliesI just wanted to know if visual basic 6.0 or Visual Basic 2010 can be programmed to create a system that uses both smart card reader and sensors (photoelectric sensors) and be recorded their information into a information management database for date and time log.
Example:
1. A personnel will have to tag their smart card to the smart card reader. It will then be checked from the database and approved if their record is available in the database.
2. He will then have the access to enter and take a particular stuff from a rack (which has the sensor) guarding on each item on the rack. If the personnel take the item. It will then be logged into the database for the 1. personnel I.D, 2. item position on the rack, 3. time and date when the item is collected.
Question:
1. What hardware are needed to incorporate all this (smart card reader and sensors to database)? a controller perhaps? terminal for all the sensors?
2. What software to create the information management database so an authorized personnel may check the event history? also software to incorporate with the sensors? will it have to be on separate software or all can be done in the package given in VB6 or VB2010 or an additional software to be used?
3. Does MSComm Control have any relevance on this subject? All i know is what it does (vaguely) and no idea how to implement it.
What I'm trying to do is to get the X and Y position of mouse but not starting from the screen upper left corner but the stage's upper left corner. Right now all I got is:

But it gets the upper left corner of form, not stage. Is there any way I could get the width and height of the borders that the form uses?

I've developed an application in VB2008 express and have installed it to another PC. The installation has put the mdf file in c:documents and settingsuserappsdata.I want to attach this with SQL Server Management studio but when I try to browse to the file in order to attach it, I find I can't browse further then C:documents and settingsuser.

My program opens with a title page (Form2, which is visible at 100% Opacity) that I want to fade after a few seconds, this works fine except that at the first reduction of opacity, Timer1's first 'Tick', the whole of Form2 blacks out for a moment. (Blinks)

I developed the code on a XP machine, but I also get the same 'Blink' on my Win. 7 Pro machine.
i have a small program to get text from a DAT file. the program gets all the text and puts it into a rich text box (rtb1) then I click a button (btnformat) to split the text in the dat file into indexes so that I can output the indexes that I want to an excel file. This program works when I use small amounts of data but if I use say 800 lines of text the program crashes/ can't handle the volume of data and just stalls.
View 14 RepliesI found out how to get the emulator working for my kinectmultipoint on 32-bit and 64-bit machines (i still need to confirm 64-bit by tests but 32-bit works). I used the webbrowser controls invokescript property and placed my vbscript code in an html page to tell internet explorer engine to pass script to correct version scripting engine when executing the vbscript.
after using navigate property I use these lines of code:

i am trying to make a small program to encrypt files using AES, and then have the password from the AES encrypted using RSA for its use of public keys. i've got the AES part working fine and i found a good RSA tutorial here url....but after i encrypt the AES password (which is saved in a .txt file) using RSA, then i try to decrypt it again, it comes out as an empty .txt file!

View 11 RepliesI are trying to write a small program for iTunes using Windows COM. We are able to talk to iTunes and create popup boxes that show the current track, and a few other small things. However, when we try to set this info to a Label for example, we get:
InvalidOperationException was unhandled by user code Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'Label1' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.
The program then hangs and locks iTunes from closing. I believe the issue is the event handler I have created, which I know very little about. We are using VB 2010, so that may change some things. We followed a rough example from a forum post HERE. If you scroll down the orange text, you will see a reply right after by Will Hughes with a "Handles iTunes.OnPlayEvent". If I add this to the end of my event handler, I get:
Handles clause requires a WithEvents variable defined in the containing type or one of its base types. Not sure if its important to the issue or not, but I found it curious. Our code is shown below.
