' Declaring a structure
Public Structure AnIndividual
Dim XCoord() As Integer
Dim YCoord() As Integer
Dim FitnessValue As Double

Each individual has a fitness function and has its own X and Y coordinates. I just want to say if individual six (for example) has the lowest fitness value then rank this individual the first one and so on for the rest of individuals.

ReDim RollsCC(NumOfPlayers - 1)

Here I am creating a temp single dimensional array, merging my 2d array into it, and then attempting to sort it by Rolls(N,1), which is a integer 1-6, Everything seems to be working right with the exception of this.
RollsCC.Sort(RollsCC, 0, 1)
How would one specify a numeral sort based on the first character in the string? im aware that I am switching Rolls(n,1) and Rolls(n,0) information during the sort.

I'm trying to sort an array based on a structure but whenever I do this, it basically erases all the data in the entire array.I have verified that the array is populated correctly, it is when using array.sort that everything returns blank.
View 6 RepliesI'm using the following code to read in a highscores file with the score written first and the player's name written to the next line, and then display the top 3 scores or fewer if there aren't 3 scores written to the file. A highscores display should have the scores sorted with the highest first so that's what this program tries to implement.
Array.sort() isn't doing a damn thing. In fact, the program's not even reversing the arrays like it should either. I've tested array.sort() this way with the names and scores arrays given explicitly and it works fine. I thought maybe it was still reading the data as string even though it's declared otherwise but it rounds off decimals when I change the array type to Integer so I'm pretty sure it's not that.
I have no idea why reading the data in from a file changes how it's sorted. My teacher didn't understand what was going on either. Does anyone know what's going on here?

I am working on a code that should capture the color of a pixel in a bitmap and then check if the 8 surrounding pixels have the same color. If the checked surrounding pixel HAS NOT the same color it will be ignored, otherwise if it HAS the same color, it should check for its own 8 surrounding pixels and so on.
To do that, I have created an array that starts with a single entry (the x,y coordinates of the initial pixel). So, when a pixel with the same color is found it is pushed to the end of the array. I used a for each loop supposing that VB would keep looping until the end of my array - and since it is growing, the last position of the array would be always pushed until I have not more pixels to be checked.
The problem is that VB is not respecting it, and is considering my array as if it had just 1 entry. Seems that it catch the size of the array when it enters the loop, and regardless the fact I have pushed new items to the array it doesnt keep looping it.
How can I force VB to update the end of array position while looping it? Although I think it wouldnt be necessary, here it goes the code I have so far...

This adds 1 and 2 to list. My question is why does the first element in the 2d array determines the length of an array and if we want to get the length 2nd index then what will be the method for that?
I have a bunch of type Double variables in my program, say for example
Dim Area as Double = 0
Dim Perimeter as Double = 0
Somewhere in my program I want to calculate these values, so I define
Public Sub TheSquare(ByRef TheArea as Double, ByRef ThePerim as Double, ByVal TheSide as Double)
TheArea = TheSide^2
ThePerim = 4 * TheSide
End Sub
and somewhere in the program I'm collecting side lengths and calculating the area and perimeter; say
While True
S = GetSideValueFromSomewhere()
TheSquare(Area, Perimeter, S)
End
In my real program, I have, say, 20 quantities that I want to calculate. Obviously each one has a different equation. But in the end I want to output all 20 to a file, so to save typing, I create an array of the quantities, like this:
Dim TypingSaver() as Double = {Area, Perimeter}
so that I can dump values to file with a three-line for-loop instead of copying and pasting 20 variable names.
This does exactly what I want if Area and Perimeter were reference types like Objects. But since they are Doubles, TypingSaver contains only their values, not references to the actual variables. So after I use my TheSquare function the values of Area and Perimeter are correctly updated but TypingSaver just constains whatever the values of Area and Perimeter were when I declared the array.
how can I create an array of references to doubles in VB.NET?
could anyone show me a code on how to transpose a two dimensional array of doubles (changing rows to columns and vice versa) ?
View 1 RepliesI need to sort an array containing a list of words and search the same using binarysearch. For certain reasons, the word-list must always be sorted using the sorting-rules of "en-US" i.e. American Regional Settings. The code will run under various international Operating Systems and of course this will mean that the word-list will be sorted differently according to the local Regional Settings in use. One problem could arise on a computer/device running with Lithuanian Regional Settings. Why? Because the letter "Y" in most languages is sorted like X-Y-Z while in Lithuanian, the sort order is I-Y-J. This behavior would create havoc to my program.
[Code]...
However, in means of flexibility I believe Guffa's answer is the best one. Why? Let's use another example:In German, the letter Ö is sorted Ö-X-Z while in Swedish and Finnish, the order is X-Z-Ö. In Estonian the sort order is Z-Ö-X. Complicated, isn't it? Guffa's solution will let me force Swedish sorting-oder (changing CultureInfo) on a device running under German Regional settings. Using Comparer.DefaultInvariant with its association to English wouldn't help in this case, probably the letter Ö would end up with O. Therefore my vote will go to Guffa.

I need to define a property in my class which is an array (of doubles).My original (bad) version is this:
Public Class Market
Property Correlations0 As Double
Property Correlations1 As Double
Property Correlations2 As Double
[code].....
This however doesn't work. I get an error already at design time: "Public Property Correlations as Double has no parameters and its return type cannot be indexed."What should I do with it? I also do not know in advance how large the array should be (the array size is determined at runtime based on other properties).
The application I'm doing requires me to "enter the size of an array in a TEXTBOX, then click a button, a list of random number would show up, then re-arrange from Lowest to Highest".For ex, i enter "5" in the TextBox, then an array or list of 5 random number will show up vertically on the ListBox. I already got this part done. Now the thing is, I have to make a For...Next statement to rearrange them from Lowest to Highest.

Now This Array is populated with decimal values and i just want to get the index values of the highest and lowest scores.i.e. if the [[scores(3) = 90]] and [[scores(7) = 90]] are equal and highest scores, i want 3 and 7 as integers in return..and same for the lowest scores..I retrieved data from a text file and stored it in Classes.. now i want to relate the above Array and these Classes..
Dim Student1 As New Student
There are total 20 of these classes.. Student2.vName, Student3,vName.. etc etc
Student1.vName = SplitterArray(0)
Student1.vID = SplitterArray(1)
Student1.Score1 = SplitterArray(2)
[code]....
For example, After i get the highest score indexes from scores(19) array i would like to get the name of the related person from Student*.vName Class (If i get 3 and 7 index i the related names would be Student4.vName and Student7.vName consequently)?
Can I do this to find the lowest value in an array greater than zero?
Dim findLowest() As Integer = {right, left, backRight, backLeft}
Dim theMove As Integer = findLowest.Min > 0
Can't seem to find it on MSDN.
I'd like to know how to sort an array that has entries with numbers after text.
I have a list of four entries:
Book 1
Book 2
Book 11
Book 12
Using Array.Sort(aBooks) returns
Book 1
Book 11
Book 12
Book 2
Is there a way to have it sort lowest to highest like 1 2 11 12 instead of 1 11 12 2?
I am new to using VB2010 (and coding in general). Also brand new to these forums . Okay so I am making a program that: allows the user enter the number of customers served for each of 12 months into an array. The application should calculate and display the following statistics: total number of customers for the year, the average monthly number of customers, and the months with the highest and lowest numbers of customers. Use inputBox to get user input. Do not accept non-numeric or negative numbers.
The problem that I am having is that I do not know how to display which was the best and worst month. I imagine I need something that targets the highest/lowest number and finds the text in the corresponding index but I'm not sure how to do this.

Dim ds As New DataSet()
da.Fill(ds, "AdvancedQuizModule1")
Chart1.Series("Advanced").XValueMember = "ID"

I have this values
tablename: AdvancedQuizModule1
ID Rate
1 43
2 5
3 87
4 23
When I plot the points (rate) it will just shows the order of the table from ID(1-4). How do I plot it in the chart that when the values displayed it was ranked from highest to lowest.
I want to get the n highest values from an integer array that has n or more elements. This can obviously done by sorting an slicing the array, but I'm wondering if there is a more efficient way to do this, since sorting a whole array would be quite ridiculous when for example only the top 2 elements of an array with length 4200 are asked for.
