Sorting - List.sort Not Working?

I have a slightly odd problem that I think is most likely due to an act of foolishness on my part, but for the life of me I (and other members of my team) can't see it.I have an object that contains a generic list property which I would like to sort. I have written a comparer class to do this for me and I am calling it in the following way:baseObject.ListOfThings.Sort(new ThingComparer()I have debugged into my compare function and it is returning the right values.However After the sort call, the list remains unchanged. Have I missed something obvious, or is there something else I need to do.EDIT: Yes I was being a fool, and the property returning a list was recreating it from scratch each time it was accessed

I'm using a Listview in VirtualMode, so I can 'add' a lot of files almost instantly. A Listview in VirtualMode does not allow sorting, so I need to sort the data myself. The data is stored as a List of Structure (it's faster to load than a List of ListViewItem). The code below works fine, but I need to sort based on multiple variables in the Structure. Code:

This is my first time posting here although I have been lurking for quite some time. I'm stuck with a problem I have seen before and never solved: I have a long list (~23,000) of alphanumeric strings that I'm reading into a List(of String) from a text file, and then sorting. When I iterate through the list after sorting, it appears to be correctly sorted EXCEPT that the element that was originally at the beginning of the list is now at the end (and it should be somewhere in the middle after the sort)Here is a sample input:

I have a List(of String()). I have written a custom comparer (implements IComparer(of string)) to do an alphanumeric sort.Is there a way to sort the List using a given index to determine which position in the String() to sort by? In other words one time I might sort by Index = 0 and another time by Index = 3. The length of all String() in the list is the same.For reference this question is similar to Sort List<String[]> except I am using VB.net and that question is hardwired to Index=0.
EDIT from OP's comments:I started simple with the non custom comparer but I am getting an error: expression does not produce a value. Not sure what I am doing wrong.Here is the code:

I am trying to sort my report on the values in a column. The underlying query consists of a director colum a movietitle column and a rating column, for every movie a director has directed there is a record which off course shows the rating in the ratingcolumn In my report I have grouped by Director and created two other columns which are called: Nr of Films and averageRating. in the design view i used two functions to accomplish this. the first is: count('the field of the rating') and sum('the field of the rating')/count('the field of the rating'). This is working... but now I would like to sort the column, Nr of Films. I think I have to do this with interactive sort of the textbox which holds the column name(i.e. Nr of Films)

I have a List(Of T) storing a list of Custom classes called Advertisement. Each advertisement contains 3 properties, Year, Make and Model. I need to sort the list By Year, then by Make and then by Model. I have a property in the Advertisement class called Vehicle which returns a formatted string with the Year Make Model like 2007 Toyota Tacoma and ive been sorting on that but its not working how I thought it would. Basically I want to sort the list by Year (decending; lowest year first) then sort by the Make and Model (in alphabetical order) Is that even possible? Here is the code ive been using.

In the following code all goes well until the .Sort line. Then I get an error which says, "The sort method is not valid. Make sure it is within the data you want to sort and the first sort by box isn't the same or blank."I've tried various permutations to deal with this exception, all to no avail. The Range is Selected ok and the Excel data are pasted from the clip board ok. Then I get the error and no sort occurs.

I'm using vb 2005, seems sorting is not working if I change the data by code. For example, if I have a simple form with only one datagridview and one button, grid was sorted on column 1, then I press the button to randomly change data in column 2, then use column 2 to sort, the display order is not correct, but after the button click, if I click on a cell, the grid will re-sort by itself, and get the right list. I know DataGridView is not for Editing data...

What would be the fastest way to sort a list that contains a list of objects, based upon another list? An example follows:Say I have multiple lists of employees. Each individual list has a common property value, say "Department". So I have a list of employees, in one list they all have the department string value of "Sales". In another list all the objects have a department value of "Finance". These lists of employees are then contained in a list which holds them all.
I have a second list, which should drives the sort order of the employee lists. The second list simply contains a list of strings like, "Finance", "Sales", "IT" and so on. I'd like my lists of customers to be sorted in the order of "Finance", "Sales", etc.I'm using VB.NET in .NET 2.0

I got a problem with dataview that get data from datatabel (Col1 : ID,Col2: Time) and I'm sorting by Time in desc ... when the values for example {40.21,80.21,70.25,25.2} the dataview sorting them as I need but when one of values goes above 100 for example {40.21,80.21,100.25,25.2} the dataview always sort the highest number is the buttom, I don't know why ..

I've tried google a way to sort a table but couldn't get my code working.My program lets the user input enter information such as first name and last name in textboxes, once done they click on update button(so far everything works).On the top right of the form it has a Combobox and it displays a list of all the names of poeple the User inputed... but it shows it in the order the user inputed.I want to have a sort button so that way when the user clicks on "sort" it will alphabetically sort the msql table by last name and reupdate that on the Combobox (most importantly save msql with the new order of names)

I'm trying to sort a List of objects with a generic comparison.I get an exception when the property on which I'm sorting happens to be null in one of the objects.VB.NET 2.0, web.i've read several posts on this exception, and still don't get it.[code]It is true that this only happens on properties which happen to be null somewhere in the list.Sometimes I sort on other properties which happen to always be always non-null (using a different, but similar, comparison method), and this technique works just fine.I've tried to implement the CompareTo for both IComparable and IComparable(of FollowupSurvey) so I could capture this exception while debugging, but netiher actually get invoked (despite what it seems like the exception is telling me). At this point, I don't have a CompareTo in my FollowupSurvey object; thus, it's using Object's.It doesn't seem as if I can really help if the base CompareTo doesn't reutrn 0.anyone have any idea what this exception really means, and how to make sorting work properly?

I'm working with datagridview.I found an example on the web about creating a datagridview: firs I make my array containing data, then I make a datatable from array, then I make datagridview from datatable.I don't know if it's the correct way but it seems work.In a column I make random numbers for test: for example I have on column "Time" these values: 1155, 1725, 584, 996, 1352.Then I try to sort with code when I press pushbutton: it doesn't work because I have the values:1155, 1352, 1725, 1758 (until now it seems to work correctly), but then I have 584 and 996 values: wrong!Ok, let's try with the manual sorting: same result.I filled cells with "integer" values, let's try using strings, then I used "value.tostring" same result.I also tryed to fill strings with blankspaces to obtain same length, but nothing changed.
