Split String On Non-alphanumeric, Non-hyphen Characters
May 24, 2012
Basically, for each character in a charArray created from the string to split, if the character is a letter, digit, or hyphen, I append it to a temporary string. When I see a split character or the last character, and the temporary string has value, I add it to the collection to return.
For i As Integer = 0 To (charArrayLength - 1)
charToInspect = CChar(charArray.GetValue(i))
If IsLetterOrDigit(charToInspect) Or charToInspect = hyphen Then

I'm working in Microsoft Access attempting to concatanate the results of a query into a single string. The code looks like this:rtn = Trim(rs.Fields(0).Value) Trim$(rs.Fields(1).Value)When I display the string in a list box, I only see the value for Fields(0) I cannot see the value for Fields(1).When I run the code in debug mode, I can see the value of rtn and it contains these non-alphanumeric boxes like this:"Earth4[] Admin[]" (where [] indicates the non-alphanumeric character)What can I do to cleanup the string, remove the [] and then display in my list box?

How can I insert a hyphen after each 3 characters in a textbox? For example, if in the text box there are: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOP. how can I insert a hyphen between each 3 letters automatically? The result would then be ABC-DEF-GHI-JKL-MNO-P. I have come to a way but it's not a practical one, i.e I used Insert(,"-") but then lines are filled with conditions slowing down the application. I have a program where a user enters a list of numbers in the form of a string. This list of numbers is always a multiple of 8.So the list can contain 8, 16, 32, 40, 48, etc. numbers.
I need to split that string into every 8 characters. For example, say the user entered "1234123445674567"
How can I split it into a string array where (0) is "12341234" and (1) is "45674567"
Note: The size of the array has to be equal to the length of the string divided by 8.
Like this:
Dim stringArray(txtInput.Text.Length/8) as String Edit: I know I could do this by making a loop that counts 8 numbers and splits it into an array but that would be lengthy and take a few variables and I know there's a more efficient way to do it. I just don't know the syntax.

MVC 3. Vb.net. Part of my app generates PDF files using Itextsharp. Some strings are too long to go onto the background image correctly. So I basically need to split this string when its over 26 characters long and when it splits it cant split in the middle of a word. from there I will use newline to add the string to the right to the next line... I did start bulding the function that I will pass the string into test for length and then pass back the string after it finishes.
Private Function stringLength(ByVal _string As String) As String
If _string.Length < 26 Then
_string.Split(
End If
End Function

I have had a look at 2010 to see if any options have been added to
System.StringSplitOptions
and we still have;
None
or
RemoveEmptyEntries
Anyway after answering another STRING related question here.>>
[URL]
I thought about how the String.Split method works.
Often I have wanted to split a string on the characters that terminate a sentence such as a full stop >> . << ,
a question mark >> ? << or an exclamation mark >> ! << and still keep the string split characters.

I am working on a site where I use the Split function on a string. To make sure I used a separator character that I do not use anywhere in the data I selected the character'£'. This worked fine in Firefox and Safari, but in IE8 I get an 'Index out of range' error, so apparently the '£' character is not handled correctly.

I need to define a regular expression that accepts Alphanumeric and the following special characters:
@#$%&*()-_+][';:?.,!
I've come up with:
string pattern = @"[a-zA-Z0-9@#$%&*+-_(),+':;?.,![]s\/]+$";
But this doesn't seem to be working.

I have to process a string that could include all sorts of non-standard characters and I've been asked to provide a regular expression that will match and remove all characters that are non-alphanumeric except punctuation and spaces. Is there a way to do this?

I'm trying to use a GUID to generate 6 random alphanumeric characters (just letters and number). Is there a way to change the format of a GUID before it is generated. Or must I generate the GUID in its standard format and then manipulate it.

I need a regular expression that can validate that a string is an alphanumeric comma delimited string.
Examples:
123, 4A67, GGG, 767 would be valid.
12333, 78787&*, GH778 would be invalid
fghkjhfdg8797< would be invalid
This is what I have so far, but isn't quite right: ^(?=.*[a-zA-Z0-9][,]).*$

I am trying to split a long string based on an array of words. For Example:Words: trying, long, array Sentence: "I am trying to split a long string based on an array of words."Resulting string array:Multiple instances of the same word is likely, so having two instances of trying cause a split, or of array, will probably happen.

I have a string array of size 51 CardListIn() representing randomly ordered cards in a deck {1d, 2d, ...14c} e.g. 9d = 9 of diamonds and so on. I then have 52 text boxes for user input. These have been put into an array of text boxes as so:[code...]
I want to search my original string array for any cards the user may input in any of the textboxes and then delete those entries from the string array. So say the user enters "1d" in one of the textboxes, I then want that removed from the string array.
I'm parsing through both the array and the text boxes fine, but for some reason that I cannot fathom, it doesn't find a match. The string array definitely contains "1d" and the textbox definitely contains "1d", but it doesn't register as a match. I've tried using Val() for the string array and the text boxes, but then it removes every entry beginning with a 1, e.g. "1d", "1h", "1c" & "1s".

Is it possible to replace string characters using the delimiter and limit of a split function?
For example you have this string "1,1,1,1,1"
I wish to replace sentence number 2 into the string "2" between the "," character so that will be limit number 1.
So the result would be "1,2,1,1,1".

I am reading a text file with mostly alpha characters. the content is not really relevant but the size of each line is very important. The process I will feed this text to will require each line be no more than 50 characters. So I will pre-process the text and add line feeds to make sure that happens.I tried several VB.NET regex like ^.*$ but that doesn't really break up the lines by 50 characters. I would take the result and iterate through each match and then cut it up and write it to an object in memory. Can this be done with a single regex pass?Otherwise I will use a streamreader and on each line check the length and if <=50 write it out with a streamwriter. if >50 cut it up in sections of 50 and then use streamwriter.
A brief example of my text:
119 SMITH KATY AAAA F ZZZ X NB SX ET
MILES,200/LM450

I need to create a console program that allows you to enter a string, of which is then outputted in reverse.
Sample:
Input: Diewas
Output: saweiD
Apparently I need to find out about strings and will also need to use a loop.

Not sure if too many people know this, but the following line will cause an error:
GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_"
....if the length of GroupName is less than 3 characters. I always thought it would simply return whatever characters in GroupName, but no, it errors. I must be thinking of the old VB6 days. So, I now have to change the code to:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) Then
If (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then
Note that the two comparisons need to be on separate lines. If they are on the same line, such as:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) and (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then then the code will still fail as the length command is executed at the same time as the substring command- which will cause the error when the GroupName length is less than 3.Just thought that those of us not aware of this should be!

Is there a way to use the string.split command to get a section of a string without using an intermediary array?for example, if my string is "1 2" and I want to get the "2" part using string.split(" "), is there a way to avoid creating a new array, and just get the bit of the string I want in a single line?

After having some trouble in my own code using String.Split and the Split(String(), Int32, StringSplitOptions) overload, I decided to look to the MSDN.I copied the entire VB.NET code example from this link: url...I placed it in a new class, and received the following errors (same errors as my own code example):[code]Why can my code not recogognize the string() parameter overloads to String.Split? Remember, i took the code from the MSDN link above, copied and pasted and it still did not work.I am counting on using the string() instead of char() overloads shown here: url...
