Keep / Maintain The Split Characters When Splitting A STRING?
Apr 29, 2010
I have had a look at 2010 to see if any options have been added to
System.StringSplitOptions
and we still have;
None
or
RemoveEmptyEntries
Anyway after answering another STRING related question here.>>
[URL]
I thought about how the String.Split method works.
Often I have wanted to split a string on the characters that terminate a sentence such as a full stop >> . << ,
a question mark >> ? << or an exclamation mark >> ! << and still keep the string split characters.

I am trying to strip the first 75 characters from various strings (sentences / phrases) and it seems right but I need to ensure that the now words are truncated in the process. Meaning that if the 75 character is part of a word it needs to fall back to the beginning of the word or nearest space..
I thought of stripping the entire string into separate words and then counting the length of combining the words and stopping when I reach the target but what do I do in the case when it is not a valid sentence just a bunch of characters jammed together. I thought of using grammar parsing tool libraries and parsing into tokens etc but that seems to over complicated.
if text.length() > 75 then
ctext = text.remove(text.length, 75) & "..."
endif
I put elipses at the end but using the above I also get the error:
does anyone have any better suggestions.

I have a situation where a user can enter just about anything they want into a text box.Whatever they enter in the box, I need to split the string into an array of strings where each item is one word. For example, if the user enters All State Insurance, I split that into a string array:
sParams(0) = "All"
sParams(1) = "State"
sParams(2) = "Insurance"

Using VB.NET - I have a string:
"##RES00012##Some value ##RES00034##Another value"
That I want to split using the "##RES" as a seperator to:
"##RES00012## Some value " and "##RES00034## Another value"
The string.split function doesn't seem to offer an overload to split on multiple characters or array of characters and maintain the seperator, which is required for functional purposes.
I'm looking at simply searching for indexOf("##res") and using string manipulation to do this unless I'm missing something obvious? I've searched SO for a solution but unable to find anything that actually does what I'm after.
The following is the closest i've found: how-do-i-split-a-string-by-a-multi-character-delimiter-in-c

I have a program where a user enters a list of numbers in the form of a string. This list of numbers is always a multiple of 8.So the list can contain 8, 16, 32, 40, 48, etc. numbers.
I need to split that string into every 8 characters.For example, say the user entered "1234123445674567"
How can I split it into a string array where (0) is "12341234" and (1) is "45674567"
Note: The size of the array has to be equal to the length of the string divided by 8.
Like this:
Dim stringArray(txtInput.Text.Length/8) as String Edit: I know I could do this by making a loop that counts 8 numbers and splits it into an array but that would be lengthy and take a few variables and I know there's a more efficient way to do it. I just don't know the syntax.

MVC 3. Vb.net. Part of my app generates PDF files using Itextsharp. Some strings are too long to go onto the background image correctly. So I basically need to split this string when its over 26 characters long and when it splits it cant split in the middle of a word. from there I will use newline to add the string to the right to the next line... I did start bulding the function that I will pass the string into test for length and then pass back the string after it finishes.
Private Function stringLength(ByVal _string As String) As String
If _string.Length < 26 Then
_string.Split(
End If
End Function

Basically, for each character in a charArray created from the string to split, if the character is a letter, digit, or hyphen, I append it to a temporary string. When I see a split character or the last character, and the temporary string has value, I add it to the collection to return.
For i As Integer = 0 To (charArrayLength - 1)
charToInspect = CChar(charArray.GetValue(i))
If IsLetterOrDigit(charToInspect) Or charToInspect = hyphen Then

I am working on a site where I use the Split function on a string. To make sure I used a separator character that I do not use anywhere in the data I selected the character'£'. This worked fine in Firefox and Safari, but in IE8 I get an 'Index out of range' error, so apparently the '£' character is not handled correctly.

I am trying to split a long string based on an array of words. For Example:Words: trying, long, array Sentence: "I am trying to split a long string based on an array of words."Resulting string array:Multiple instances of the same word is likely, so having two instances of trying cause a split, or of array, will probably happen.

Is it possible to replace string characters using the delimiter and limit of a split function?
For example you have this string "1,1,1,1,1"
I wish to replace sentence number 2 into the string "2" between the "," character so that will be limit number 1.
So the result would be "1,2,1,1,1".

I am reading a text file with mostly alpha characters. the content is not really relevant but the size of each line is very important. The process I will feed this text to will require each line be no more than 50 characters. So I will pre-process the text and add line feeds to make sure that happens.I tried several VB.NET regex like ^.*$ but that doesn't really break up the lines by 50 characters. I would take the result and iterate through each match and then cut it up and write it to an object in memory. Can this be done with a single regex pass?Otherwise I will use a streamreader and on each line check the length and if <=50 write it out with a streamwriter. if >50 cut it up in sections of 50 and then use streamwriter.
A brief example of my text:
119 SMITH KATY AAAA F ZZZ X NB SX ET
MILES,200/LM450

I need to create a console program that allows you to enter a string, of which is then outputted in reverse.

Apparently I need to find out about strings and will also need to use a loop.

Not sure if too many people know this, but the following line will cause an error:
GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_"
....if the length of GroupName is less than 3 characters. I always thought it would simply return whatever characters in GroupName, but no, it errors. I must be thinking of the old VB6 days.So, I now have to change the code to:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) Then
If (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then
Note that the two comparisons need to be on separate lines. If they are on the same line, such as:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) and (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then then the code will still fail as the length command is executed at the same time as the substring command- which will cause the error when the GroupName length is less than 3.Just thought that those of us not aware of this should be!

I need to split a string at all whitespace, it should ONLY contain the words themselves. How can I do this in vb.net? Tabs, Newlines, etc. must all be split! This has been bugging me for quite a while now, as my syntax highlighter I made completely ignores the first word in each line except for the very first line.

I am trying to split a string into array. I know about split, but it seems to need a separator of some type. Suppose I am going to be working with input like the following. 8561369 and I want to split each character of that string into an array. I tried something like this, but again Split seems to need a separator, I just keep getting the entire string in one entry of my array, not split. Dim values as String 'I am going to be populating this string variable via user input eventually, 'which is why I cannot just add spaces. values = "8561369"

Im trying to work out how to do a project called pig latin in vb.net 2003... so far I've gotten it to work for a single word. If there are spaces it still acts like there is only one word with the rules (ex: monkey stuff = onkey stuffmay) I know that i have to figure a way to seperate the string up if there is a space and do the rules for pig latin for each word and then make it show up in a message box but I'm stuck... as soon as i can get it to split I have to calculate the number of words starting with a variable and percent of said words and so on which shouldnt be hard with an If Then statement

I want to get only the value that I highlighted. I split the line like this
Dim tfLines() As String = System.IO.File.ReadAllLines("C:\file.txt")
Dim sf As New System.IO.StreamWriter(drill, True)
For I As Integer = 0 To tfLines.Length - 1
Dim Words() As String = tfLines(I).Split(",")
Dim sWord() As String = Words(0).Split()
[Code] .....
From the code above I can write all the values that I highlighted in red. To get the blue colour value I try to split my line again like this:
Dim tWord() As String = Words(1).Split()
If I use this code it shows me error "Index was outside the bounds of the array." I don't know why I am getting this error.

Here is an example "I want to split this string into 3 separate pieces" The above string contains 50 characters including the spaces.What I want to do is divide the string by 3 =16, but split it at the next space so the words stay whole, so they will read "I want to split this" = 20 "string into 3 separate" = 22
"pieces" = 6 With another string, it may need to be split into 4 = 12 characters each, but split it at the next space, so it would read:
"I want to split" = 15
"this string" = 12
"into 3 separate" = 15
"pieces" = 6
I would need to use the trim method to remove leading spaces and trailing spaces - I can do that but I can't work out how to split a string into 3 approximate equal lengths and keep words whole.
