DB/Reporting :: Charity Library Management System - VS2010
Aug 15, 2011I have read syedwaqasali95's thread but found it rater confusing so thought I would post my query separately I am trying to build a library system for a local blind person's charity using Visual Basic. Their current system of recording is an Excell Spreadsheet that was created for them by someone else. What they have asked for is something more User Friendly.I thought about using Access first, but I wanted to hide the Data where it couldn't be modified by accident, and I wanted to make it as user friendly as possible so I opted for a VB WindowsFormApplication that will have a simple user interface albeit having to get more complicated under the hood.The library has two types of items that they lend, Audio Books, and Music CD's. Also there will need to be a record of the members creating three tables for my database.I should state that the library has a laidback lending approach whereby it is less worried about how long you borrow a book or CD, rather it just wants to keep a record of the location of said items.
I need help/pointing in the right direction with the following things 1) I want to prevent any ability to directly edit the datagridview data instead I want the user to highlight the entry in the datagridview, and then click an edit button which will open a form containing the record to be edited.
2) I want to be able to call information from the borrowers database, and to be able to apply it to the books data, so that the user can see who has what book at any given time.
e.g. the user highlights a record in datagridview and clicks the "Lend" button, this pops out a form allowing the user to search/choose from the list of members, once a member has been selected the save button (or confirm lend) would add the member info to the book table and close the form
3) I have a large amount of data (1500 records) in the original excel document, I would like to import these (once the database is ready to be compiled) so that they don't have to be re-input.
Visual Studio Causes Error In SQL Management Studio
Apr 17, 2011This is my first try of Visual Basic 2010 Express, though I have 10 yrs+ experience in VBA. I'm running Windows XP SP2 on a desktop pc with following installed: Visual Basic 2010 Express... just installed! SQL Server 205 Express ... been running on pc for 12 months I've created a new DB in SQL for my test application, but have not added any users or permissions to it as I'm using Windows authentication.
I've created a new Windows Forms Solution in VB2010EXP and tried adding a new Data Source for my new SQL DB, but it keeps giving error message about not having rights ot the db. 2 days of searching on the web has confirmed many others with similar issues, but no obvious solution. Eventually I find a few threads about permissions and moving the mdf into the root of the HDD, so try moving my mdf file up closer to the root of the Hard Drive msf was in C:Documents and Settings\_SharedDataApplication_DataMSSQL2005Data now in C:SQL2005Data

Nov 5, 2009Using Vb.net 2003 Asp.net 1.1 Sql Server2005 Express Vs.Net 7.1. I have Vb.Net Standard and there is no Web Set Up with this version. I have FTP things along time ago but not asp just basic stuff. I have read about xcopy,copy project, I have XP and IE that I can FTP from. I also have to put a database up from SQL Managment Studio. I need to know HOW WHAT WHEN WHERE on how to do this right. This is an interactive site that I made, very similar to a Forum like this site. Do I just upload the dll.
I don't want my source code available for everyone to see, do I have to obfucate it if I am using [url] as a host. The site can't really be down all the time, I have read that I could work on thesite while it is up but I believe I will have to have all the source files up and open.

Jul 7, 2010I am writing a program to record patient info for a local ambulance company. My problem is when a patient is added it does not write to the SQL server. When I open up the table in the Management Studio the record is not there. Here is the other thing that is weird to me. I open the program, add the patients info, clear the search box, type in their info and the record shows up. When I close and reopen the program I search the same record and nothing comes up. I tried redoing the string command, then thought maybe I needed to use parameters but that didn't work either.

Jun 26, 2011Is there a straightforward way to make a copy of a VB.NET solution and continue the project in another direction? I'd think this is a common problem but haven't been able to find an easy solution. Copying the files and renaming seems messy to me. Does the VS IDE provide anything like this? Update: It's a small project on my home computer so I'm currently not using source control. I wasn't expecting to need to fork or anything. Is there a way I can do this without setting up git or similar?

In this case, SelectQuery and ManagementObjectSearcher are underlined with squiggly blue, and it doesn't know what these are. What am I missing here? Please help, because I'd love to be able to write console apps that query WMI.
WMI Printer Management?
Aug 1, 2006I am using vb 2005 and need help with trying to do the following :A Form that has a combo box , a listview and 2 command buttons( When the form loads ) i need the combo box to be enumerated with the printers that are on my server ( so will need to connect to my server which is obviously a remote machine ).Then when ever I select a printer from the combo box, it enumerates the listview with any print jobs that are in that printers que and I am able to select either one or multiple print jobs and click on the cancel print job button ( which will cancel any selected print jobs ) or click the cancel all button which will just delete any print jobs in that printers que.I know this is a lot to ask but even if I could just get an example of how to enumerate the printers into the combobox and get the listview to display the print jobs ( If any exist ) for that specific printer.That would be great.

Can't Authenticate Using System.Management And WMI
Jun 16, 2009I'm trying to write some code that can read events from another computer's event log. I haven't used WMI or System.Management all that much before this, and despite all the examples I've found on the web (there's a lot), I cannot authenticate to another machine.
No matter how I tweak the code, I always receive a System.UnauthorizedAccessException in System.Management.dll. (The message is "Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED))".) I have tried connecting to two different Vista machines on the network using their local user account information.[code]...

Where username and password are predefined. What I need is a way of utilising the Windows credential manager to handle this. Ideally, I like it to pop up a credential prompt at application start, and then store the credentials for later use. So far so easy, but I want to be able to use the tick box to save the credentials back to the store, so taht next time the application is used, they are already filled in.
So far I've been investigating the CredentialsDemo from MSDN, but have been unable to adapt the routines to a web request from the given example of a SQL request. In fact I've not even been able to get the demo working adapting it to my own SQL server!It utilises the CredUIPromptForCredentials function. Is this the right way to go? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
