Timer To Run Off PC/Server System Time?

Aug 2, 2010

I have an application that I'm writing that needs to run 3 different Timers. One that will run every 5 minutes, 1 that will run every hour and 1 that has to run once a day sometime after 5:00 P.M. I know that I can seperate the application into 3 seperate applications and use Windows Scheduled Tasks to perform this however I would prefer to have everything in 1 application and just run the different Sub/Functions off of the appropriate Timer. I'm trying also figure out a way to avoid 2 timers firing at the same time.

What i would like to do is tell the 5 minute timer to run say 2 minutes after every 5 minute mark in the our so the first one would be at 12:07 and then the next would be at 12:12 and so on. The hour timer should run sa at 12:20. The daily one run at say 5:31.Is it possible to use the System.timer or the System.Threading.timer in this way?

I was about to start with programming the socket class(es) when I realized that I have no idea how to make such a complicated socket system. I do not under any circumstance want to use any other code than my own since that would not help me learn sockets. I am familiar with a single connection socket system like most tutorials use.

Sql Server - Strategies For Testing Against A Live System?

Dec 1, 2009

Let me describe the scenario:Our VB.NET web application talks to a third party data provider via webservices. It also saves data in a HUGE SQLServer database which has extensive business logic implemented in stored procs and triggers. The webservice provider also employs convoluted business logic which is quite dynamic.

The dilemma is that both the webservice provider and the sqlserver are essentially live systems and our company has no access to them outside of normal operations (web and SQL calls). Neither offer helpful support on their end.Additionally, the webservice has no 'test mode' and all calls are treated as live transactions. It is not possible to mimic the logic in either of these systems, nor is it possible getting a copy of the sqlserver DB.

So, my question is:How do you do any kind of testing (manual or automated) of our VB.NET application against these live systems?

Sql Server - System.ServiceModel.FaultException SQL Error

Sep 16, 2010

So upon a method call to a webservice, I'm getting this error:

"System.ServiceModel.FaultException`1[System.ServiceModel.ExceptionDetail]: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Fault Detail is equal to An ExceptionDetail, likely created by IncludeExceptionDetailInFaults=true,

[code]....

What could this possibly be? At first I thought it was coming in locally, but someone below pointed out since the error is wrapped in a ServiceModel.FaultException, it might be on the host end. Is it definitely on their end? Or are there any possible ways this could be on my end?

Connect To Sql Server 2008 R2 FILESTREAM From Remote System?

Jul 2, 2011

I'm developing a online document management application for my client using the following technologies

Front End - VB.Net 2010 (Windows Forms)
Back End - SQL Server 2008 R2 Express (FILESTREAM enabled to level 3)

I wanted to store the files (*.pdf, *.doc, *.exe, .) using the FILESTREAM feature in SQL Server 2008 R2.I prefer FILESTREAM because sometimes the file size exceeds 2GB.I'm able to save and retrieve file with FILESTREAM (using Windows Authentication/Integrated Security). But my client wants to save or retrieve the file from different PC.So I'm in need of accessing the FILESTREAM BLOB from remote systems.

Email Code Works On Local System But Not From Web Server?

May 2, 2011

I have developed an ASP.Net 2.0 application and I am facing problem in sending email from my Web Server. Following is the VB code I have used to send email from my web application. Thing is when I try to send email from my local system (laptop) the email goes out fine and reaches the recipient address instantly but when I try to send email from my web server it fails. My hosting provider gave me a relay-host address for sending out email. The email goes out fine but the relay host has an annoying amount of delay in email delivery which is a problem during the sign up process.

Here is the code I am using:I have imported system.net.mail in my code and used async="true" on the aspx page.

Private Sub SendMail(ByVal actcd As String)
Dim mailMessage As New System.Net.Mail.MailMessage
mailMessage.From = New MailAddress(support@ihomejobs.com)

[code]....

I have tried the above settings and they work fine from outlook and the application when tried on my laptop but these settings fail on web server.I want to send email from my web server without using a relay-host.

.NET 1.1, System.Web.Mail And Windows 2003 Server Error Message?

Apr 14, 2009

I have a project that up until recently has been working fine. It sends an email message to a user once a file has been successfully uploaded, registered and/or approved to use the website. It is written in VB.NET framework 1.1, running ASP.NET on a Windows 2003 server SE sp2.

First the code
Public Sub EmailAfterRegister(ByVal sEmail As String, ByVal sUser As String)

This has worked for over one or two years. Today I realized upon testing I get the following error:The procedure entry point IstrcmpiI could not be located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL.Upon some research I found that maybe I needed to install MDAC 2.8, which i downloaded and installed today, however i still get the same error. I have had my communications and network admins check traffic and connectivity to the smtp server and all is working fine. Yet I still get the error.

Php - Automatically Restarting A Chat Server Application On System Restart?

Jul 22, 2009

I developed a chat application with an attendant chat server. Everything is working fine. The issue now is the fact that whenever the chat server goes down (for instance, the server system shuts down as a result of power failure or some other problem), by the time the server system come back on, the chat server would have to be restarted manually.

I believe (and I know) it is more appropriate for the chat server application to restart itself when the computer comes back on (and of course regardless of who is logged in and of course, even before anyone logs in). I have a batch file that executes the chat server. My attempt was to create a windows service that start automatically and runs this batch file using a Network Service account on the server system. Although, I'm having a hard time with this (temporarily), I would love to ask if there are any alternatives to using a windows service.
