My problem with both the 2005 version and the 2008 version is that the "Add New Project" window contains only the "Templates" panel. Using Visual Studio 2010, Windows 7.Setting up project on one machine, then attempting deployment it on another machine with Windows 7 on it:When it comes to deployment, every time I have one to do, it is like pulling teeth.I am in file system setup, and I have a custom folder created with DefaultLocation set at [CommonAppDataFolder].Supposably you can use the "Common Files Folder" too, but that did not work either.What is happening is, I have three files in this folder, and two of them copy over just fine, when I look at the ProgramData/Tachufind folder, both of those files are in there, but no sign whatsoever of the third file.I have tried deleting and then re-copying the file back in, to no avail.I have tried setting various properties, to see if that will change anything, to no avail. Can't Microsoft make this easier, this is deployment-hell! Is there another application you can use to deploy a project without losing your sanity?

View 6 Repliesi am trying to publish a vb.net project that has is connected to a database. the project can be published and installed and runs fine without the data base part. i get following error message: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

I am trying to deploy an application that uses SMO on a workstation without SQL Server installed on it. The instance the app is connecting to is SQL Server 2008. The application is failing with:Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Replication, Version 10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral,PublicKeyToken=89845cdc8080cc91' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.
The assembly in question is in the same path as my application as well as system32. I am running this on a Windows 7 64 bit box. I have run SQL Native Client, CLR, and SMO MSIs from the 2008 SMO redist download page.This app worked fine when connecting to SQL Server 2005.
I have already wrote my own Registration checking software in VB.NET, however I wanted a Special key that I could use in the Registration, and I want to get this from the user, so when they download my software I will with online feature send them a Serial Number, which they will enter when they install the software, I then want to write it to the Registry using the Setup and Deployment project, so that my application can retrieve it every time it is run to check Registration.

My application needs to be able to be pointed at different SQL Servers and different databases and I would like to provide the end user with a nice method of selecting both the server and database (the app is for use by other IT staff).Ideally, I was thinking of allowing them to browse to the server (with possibly entering credentials or even better, using their Windows credentials as the databases in question should be accessible to the relevant people via their AD account), and then listing the databases on that server allowing them to select one to use.
I would like them to then be able to easily change the server and database whenever necessary.I imagine I would then need to build the connection strings based on what they select but at the moment I have got rather stuck in just trying to create a form with some kind of Server Browser (I've not got as far as a database browser!).Failing some kind of server/database browser options, I would change to some simple text boxes where the user can enter the name of the server and database directly with some kind of connection verification button.
Finally, is it easy to connect to multiple databases on the same SQL Server at the same time? Is it just a case of creating and referencing multiple connection strings?I am using VB 2008 Professional and SQL Server 2005 Standard.

I have developed an application using vb.net. This application will run on approximately 15 machines at the main office and also roughly 10 machines spread over 3 different locations. I am using SQL Server Express edition in the backend. I deployed the application on the network using caspol but it is extremely slow. The Company Manager's perception is that because a script will invariably have to be deployed on each client machine to configure CASPOL, that the solution is not viable.

I made an app that uses a Access Db extensively(will be changed to sql later). I have hard coded the location of the db into the app,i use one click to deploy the program and then i manually copy the database into the location.
