Start A Vb Express Application Without Opening Its Form?
Jul 28, 2010
I've been in VB express for about tree weeks, formerly of VB 5 for about 10 years.
I need to open a form on top of the form of another application, that is, making the other applications form its parent. The title on the applications form can change, so searching for the form by name won't work.
I'm also curious, can you start a vb express application without opening its form? Like in Vb5/6 you could start in Sub_Main?

I am complete newbie to VB express. I have created a simple windows form that opens programs using menus and so on.Works great using the Process.Start on windows apps (word, excel, etc.) but I have some very old programs that run in DOS I am also trying to open that do not work when using the Process.Start method.
I am able to get the command prompt box to open up and in the title bar it shows the path of the .exe program I want to open but the actual program is not opening.

I'm working on my first Visual basic program and I've hit a snag. I want to make a working search form that pulls data from an access database that i already have linked into my visual basic program.
Basically when they click search, i wan't it to check the textbox (lets say firstName.text box for now) for there name, then find all the entries in my database that have those names and display them in a grid.

I have made my application to start automaticly when windows start (registry ../currentversion/run/appname + path). In this mode the application start minimized and an little icon appear in the notification icon area. With this icon you can maximize the app or exit it.If you exit the app and start it again using the Menu (Start/programs etc) than the application start in minimized mode (and in this case I would like to have it in normal mode) because the setting autostart is still true.Is there a way you can detect when the application start when windows startup using the above registry or when people click on an icon in the programs menu (or desktop)?

I am at the form/application stage, and now working on my final project. I know how to open an application from the form, but I want to open the app within the form. I already have my web browser on one form, and button command that gets me there. I also want to run a special program that I have already created in the command window on the form that I have. I have the form ready, the command that I click to open the cmd.exe but, now it I cannot get it to run in the form, ie. a panel. At least that is where I think it should run.
my panel is called pnlcommandwindow, and I have it visible:false until I click the button. It opens with cmd.exe and command.com. But, I want the same window that is opened when I run a program in VB command window.
In the command button or the panel or another box?

I am developing a commercial application that needs to do some environment checking upon start up. I need to check things like the following. 1. Is there a registry entry on this machine that has various keys for paths to SQL Server 2. If it does not I need to create them. 3. Prompt user for the path to the SQL Server 4.Check the SQL Server to see if the database I need exists. 5. Create the DB if not. 6. Populate the DB with the tables I need 7. Create stored procs in the DB 8. Write the registry. I could do all this in the form load of the main form. However is there a better way? Like doing all these checks as part of a splash screen for example.

I am converting several VBA projects to Windows form applications. The only problem I have is that some of the functionality of Excel is essential to the application, such as R1C1 formulas. I do not want to instantiate the Excel application or access saved worksheets. All of the data is retrieved by querying Oracle databases. 2-Dimensional arrays are not an option because the columns contain differing datatypes, and DataGridViews are too slow to work with.
I thought simply dimming a Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Worksheet object would be enough, but the program kept failing and upon inspecting the object's elements in debug mode, I found that every value says this:
{"Unable to cast COM object of type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.WorksheetClass' to interface type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel._Worksheet'. This operation failed because the QueryInterface call on the COM component for the interface with IID '{000208D8-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}' failed due to the following error: No such interface supported (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80004002 (E_NOINTERFACE))."}

I want to know how to start a forum hidden. I know I can just add Me.Hide() to the Window_Loaded event, But it's ugly. The user sees the form for a split second then it dissapears. I want to form to start up hidden. Little background on my program, it is a small taskbar application, Has a small notify icon. When the app is loaded. I only want the notify icon to be visible. I have done this by creating my own Main subroutine in a Module that I created. and I am laucnhing the application like so
Imports System.Windows.Application
Module MainModule
Sub Main()
Dim mainWin As New MainWindow

"How to avoid Linked Table manager message while opening the Access DB."I have asked how to disable Macro (programmatically vb.net) while opening the MSAccess DB and I got some good reference and code samples to do so. But unfortunately I could not able to achieve the expected result. I have tried API to enable/disable Keys (SHIFT) at run time and also use some command-line options programmatically but still it's not working even not getting any error as well.One of my AccessDB contains Macro and it calls a form while opening the DB. And the form has some link to Tables and it creates interrupt asking proper path to the table and halts the application till the user intervention.Other one calls form in start-up while opening the DB. It causes opening of all the forms while running the Application.

I need to open a .xlt for editing, like so:
System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("Template.xlt", "Editable=True")
But I don't know the correct switch in Excel. This is the same as right-clicking on an .xlt and choosing "Open", whereas the default action is "New".

I'm using Process.Start to start an external command line application and using the StartInfo.Arguments method to send parameters to the application. I imagine I'll need to use a loop... but I can't figure out exactly how yet.I need to send anywhere from 1 - an infinite number of files names to this application. Each file has to be sent one after the other. So once the first one is done, I need to loop back around and past the second one.I can probably use the Directory.GetFiles method to get all of the files, but I don't know how to assign them.

Creating a new database in a Windows Forms project (done according to one of the MSDN tutorials) results immediately in a "The event log is full" error.The database exists as an item in the project, but cannot be opened or configured (i.e.,it doesn't exist really). newly installed MS SQL Server Compact Edition,This is a new computer (though fully updated), and to my knowledge no other versions of SQL server are installed.I note that someone else has contributed a message about the exact same problem (according to a preview in the MSDN search results page), although for unknown reasons clicking on the item does not take me to that message.
