Start A DOS Application Using VB 2008 Express?
Jul 1, 2009I am complete newbie to VB express. I have created a simple windows form that opens programs using menus and so on.Works great using the Process.Start on windows apps (word, excel, etc.) but I have some very old programs that run in DOS I am also trying to open that do not work when using the Process.Start method.
I am able to get the command prompt box to open up and in the title bar it shows the path of the .exe program I want to open but the actual program is not opening.

Start A Vb Express Application Without Opening Its Form?
Jul 28, 2010I've been in VB express for about tree weeks, formerly of VB 5 for about 10 years.
I need to open a form on top of the form of another application, that is, making the other applications form its parent. The title on the applications form can change, so searching for the form by name won't work.
I'm also curious, can you start a vb express application without opening its form? Like in Vb5/6 you could start in Sub_Main?

Aug 2, 2011I have an Excel template that contains numerous pre-defined charts and a program that opens this template and collects data used to populate the charts. This works great but I now want to adjust the series length so that the charts only used the data collected (not a range of 32000). I'm trying to iterate through the charts and determine the range for each series of each chart but not having much luck. The snippet below allows me to see the xvalues but does not return any information as to where this data is located. Does anyone know how to extract the range for each series in a chart?

Feb 28, 2011I have made my application to start automaticly when windows start (registry ../currentversion/run/appname + path). In this mode the application start minimized and an little icon appear in the notification icon area. With this icon you can maximize the app or exit it.If you exit the app and start it again using the Menu (Start/programs etc) than the application start in minimized mode (and in this case I would like to have it in normal mode) because the setting autostart is still true.Is there a way you can detect when the application start when windows startup using the above registry or when people click on an icon in the programs menu (or desktop)?

Mar 16, 2009I have recently released a free application for some game and now I have added a few features 'the public' requested.
I used Inno Setup to create the installer, which works just fine.
Now however, instead of having the ask the user to uninstall the current version, and then reinstall my new version, I want to be able to give the user an Update install exe which they can simply run and it will update the existing application.
One thing I would like is that the users Settings are not changed. So hence the following questions: 1. Where are the Settings stored? I thought it was in the user's Local Settings <Application Name> directory, but I cannot find my application there... I cannot find it in the All Users or Administrator 'accounts' directories either...
2. Are the Settings stored depending on the Version of your application? (Assembly Version / File Version)?
If 2. is true, then obviously changing the Application Version (which is logical in an Updated executable, no?) would also change the Settings back to default..? Can I avoid that?
Finally, is it enough to simply overwrite the executable? What registry 'work' do I need to do, or can Inno Setup do that for me? I am only using one other file which is the SharpZipLib DLL file.

Apr 1, 2010For some reason I get "Exception from HRESULT: 0x800A01A8" from the following code only if I open the XLS file outside of the application I'm coding while this code is being ran. Can anyone advise as to what might be occurring and how to fix this? Right now when my application launches I just output a messagebox informing the user not to open Excel while the data is being loaded. I'd like to correct this problem.Another thing is that when I open the XLS file externally after my application loads an instance of the file, it doesn't prompt to open it as read-only.

Jul 13, 2010I have an application the contains several excel files bundled with it. I'm not opening the files and processing them within my application. These files contain a data-connection to reload all of the pivot-tables within each excel file. I have a 'link' on my form, that when clicked, it determines which file to open and calls a sub using filename and executing Process.Start(filename) for any excel file I want to open. I have no problems opening any one of the files and then exiting excel.
The problem is when I 'close' a file, but don't exit Excel; then try to open another file(clicking link on form)... it creates a new instance of Excel.
I know from experimenting that the fileopendialog form will 'reuse' an existing Excel instance, IF it does not already have a file open.
How can I do the same thing without using the fileopendialog?
I don't want the end-user to have access to the folders where these files live. That's why I have multiple 'links' on my form, one for each xls that already exists. I just want them to be able to click on a link and the xls file opens AND if they choose to merely 'close' a file and not exit... Don't create a new instance of Excel, but re-use the existing one.

Mar 13, 2009How do I diagnose this?I have an app that I am creating... it has worked fine up till now.Heres what changed from the last build:Took most of images and removed them from resx file and instead added them in folders set to content and copy if newer.Added a RichTextBox Added an XML reader (Imports Imports System.Xml & Imports System.Xml. then just code to load/parse an xml file - and load it into the RTB an color some tags I published it, uploaded it (ClickOnce)tried it on my pc.. worked fine.. updated/ran users are saying the app says "The Application wont start - contact vendor"How on earth do I diagnose what the issue is? any ideas? (I cant get to these peoples computers... i dont know them)EDIT: Seems that it works fine for Vista Users, but not for XP users...? (odd, im on XP and it works fine)Digging around i found an app called dependency walker. Its saying that the DWMAPI.DLL is missing.. seems to point to IE7 needing this on XP?So, if I am thinking right... if the XP users dont have IE7, then the XMLReader breaks it? maybe??

I imagine I'll need to use a loop... but I can't figure out exactly how yet.I need to send anywhere from 1 - an infinite number of files names to this application. Each file has to be sent one after the other. So once the first one is done, I need to loop back around and past the second one.I can probably use the Directory.GetFiles method to get all of the files, but I don't know how to assign them.

Is there a way to do this? I have been using Process.Start.
