View 3 RepliesI am about to develop an application in vb.net 2010, until now I used to connect to database server to manage my data . Now i need to develope an .exe which could run in any pc, so I need somehow to store the data in a local database which is embedded to my application, I see .NET has a local database. My question is a right choice to use a local database for these kind of solutions?
View 4 Repliesi am trying to write a program which reads a data from the database and perform some calculations. what i am intending to do is when a user selects an item from a listbox and clicks the submit button the program, calls a function to calculate using the value stored in the database and display the result in a textbox.the problem is i cant store the data retrieved from the database into a variable so that the calculations can be done. i am using vb and microsoft sql server.can anyone tell me how do i store the data retrieved by the query into a variable.
View 12 RepliesI've always used this approach while implementing data layer DLL for web application:
1) put datasets into the dll project
2) use a helper class with a method like this:
public shared sub settCnnStr(strconnhere as string)
My.Settings.Item("connectionString") = strconnhere
end sub
3) when I need to use the dll I call a method like this (usually into global.asax):
xxxxxxx.helper.setCnnStr("yyyyyyyyyyyyyy")
This method always worked for me nicely but I'd like to know if this method could have serious drawback or if there's a better solution.

Is it possible to have a Textbox on a form that when the user inputs data, ( during Runtime )that data remains in the Textbox for good and the Textbox then becomes read only ? Is it also possible to make it so that the CD with the programme on, is in the PC when the programme is being used. Perhaps writing the Textbox data back onto the CD ?

View 3 RepliesI have a form with one combo box and text box, and an SQL database named balance with two columns; one as customername and the other as obbalance. I had bound all of the customer name to the combo box, now what I have to do is, when a user selects a customer name from the combo box, the text box should show the obbalance of the selected customername; here, the customer name will not be repeated - only one name per customer.

I've tried this, but I can't see the value in the text box, and obbalance is a floating-point value from the SQL database.
textbox1.text = "6916092, 15195440, 16107657, 1836924, 3758726, 12566463, 7526079, 7405793, 6945974, 241502, 2296476, 5130294, 3102017, 7324121, 14993507"
ColorDialog1.CustomColors = New Integer() {TextBox1.Text}
I am getting an InvalidCastException. How do I insert the value of textbox1.text into those brackets in vb.net?
why do i get an error here?TextBox1.Text = TextBox1.Text & Str(ColorDialog1.Color)
View 1 RepliesI have a vb .net ArrayList that I would like to store in one field on my Ms SQL 2008 database. Is it possible to put it in and get it back out as an ArrayList? I'm guessing i need to break down the Array some how and store it as a string, then rebuild it when reading back as i dont see any datatypes for sql that are for arrays. Which is a bummer for me! edit - The ArrayList stores a set of quote ID's. There is no limit to how big it is so it could hold 1 or 1001 different ID's

how to store images in database using VB.Net?
View 2 RepliesRecently I started a project with the goal being to have text that was inputted into a textbox stored within a three dimensional jagged array. The idea is that every time a button is pressed, whatever text that is inputted into the textbox is split into separate elements, where each word occupies its own element in the array. So for example, if a poem were entered into the textbox and the button clicked, each word of the poem would be assigned to a discrete element in the vertical dimension, and each line of the poem assigned an element in the horizontal dimension. After the text is stored into the 3D jagged array, the text should be cleared from the textbox and a counter should then ensure that on the next button press, the new text inputted into the textbox is stored in a discrete element of the array. Below is the code I have written so far, but I know that I am far from having anything might accomplish what I have just described.

I'm creating a project for my brother's thesis for his VB subject.Now, the thing is, I'm trying to display row data from database to the (already binded) textboxes in form1. As you may know, this procedure requires that the program:
1. Declares an sqldatareader, sqlcommand, and an sqlconnection.
2. open the sqlconnection.
3. ....and use the sqldatareader to fetch the data from the source file.
The database file is made using sql server compact 3.5 and is located on same pc as where I'm making the program.The problem is, I'm getting stumped in trying to connect to the sql server. I'm getting a 26 error "error locating server/instance specified". installing sql server 2008 management studio to allow remote connections (which was already allowed in the 1st place), enabling TCP/named pipes protocol in the config manager, and enabling sql server browser service. I dont have spi firewall on since my isp has its own firewall on and xp fwall is off too. What I'm not sure about is my connection string as it might have been impeding me to connnect to server. How do I form out the correct connect string?

I try to use VB .net to develop a small program. In this program, there has a form. In this form, there have several text box and toolbar. The problem is after I input text into textbox and I do not press <enter> key, I go to click save button in form's toolbar. I found that this textbox's data cannot save into database. If I press <enter> key after I input text into textbox, data can save into database properly.

I am in front of a great dilemma whether to store files in Database or doing it the standard way. I would choose the second option, but my application will be used by multiple users, so I am doing it by Web Services.
On the one hand, storing in database will be very useful as every user would have access to everything very fast, not caring about file paths, locations and so on.
On the other hand, if this table consists of 1000 files, wouldn't it be a bad idea as there should be some performance loss?
At the present moment, I am using mysql as database, but I am thinking of moving to SQL Server, but I suppose this is not DB Issue.
I'm trying to store three images from a form (PictureBox's) into a SQL Database (MSSQL2008) The below does what I want but is clearly inefficient. Any pointers on what to change to improve this?

I am using vb.net (visual studio 2010) and have made a form application that uses a login screen. All that works but I am having trouble any firm way to encrypt the passwords in the database. The encryption doesn't have to be very high standard as its just for a college project. Whats the best way to encrypt the password into the database? Or just encrypt the password string, I can then sort out the database end myself.
