I just want to verify something. I believe it is likely that if I apply the using command to a SqlDataReader, that it will both close the data reader and dispose of it. For example:
Using sdr As SqlDataReader = cm.ExecuteReader()
Dim someInt As Integer = sdr.GetInt32(0)
'other details and actions
End Using
Will that close the sdr SqlDataReader after it exits the Using code block. (I believe it will, but just want to verify.)
I have a utility programs's EXE file, when i run this file there is a winform only and there is button when we click on it, it run windows's notepad. Now I want to hijack this program's command to run notepad and instead of running notepad I want to run MS Word. I know C# and VB.NET. What I need to do this ?
View 2 Repliesi was wondering if theres a way to make an if command apply to more than one thing, this is my problem: theres 9 white squares and if theres one or more thats orange, then a numer.text goes down one but at the moment theres 9 white squares and for every one thats orange the score goes down one, so if three are orange then the score goes down by three, or if five are orange then the score goes down by five, I'd like to make it so that even if there all nine the score only goes down by one.
View 13 RepliesI'm trying to create a valid RegEx replacement pattern for correctly formatting specific .XML file names. Specifically, if a file name does not begin with a prefix, let's say, ACE_. If the XML file name and extension does not begin with ACE_, prepend the string ACE_ to the file name. For example, if my input source string is the following:
Widgets.xml
I would like to execute a single RegEx Replacement that would result in the string being:
ACE_Widgets.xml.
Conversely, if the string already begins with ACE_, I would like it to remain unchanged. Also, how can I include the pattern ".xml" to ensure that the string pattern for the file name and extension ends with ".xml" in the same matching pattern for the RegEx Replacement pattern? As for the match, I have some luck with the following:
^ACE_{1}[dD]+
Which indicates there is a match for the pattern if the input string is ACE_Widgets.xml and no match if the string is Widgets.xml
The RegEx pattern would suffice, but if you need to know the language in which I'd like to use the replacement pattern is in .NET 4.0 in either C# or VB.NET.
The following posting is close to what Im looking for, but with the inclusion of the *ix directory path prefix, and the use of preg_replace() in PHP, I'm having a bit of a struggle getting it to work with what I need to do:
Regular Expression: How to replace a string that does NOT start with something?
How will I select a substring with 2 criteria? I have a Richtextbox where I select a number after a : with this code; For Each line As String In Richtextbox1.Lines Dim equalsPos As Integer = line.IndexOf(":") + 1 txtFound.AppendText(line.Substring(equalsPos, line.Length - equalsPos)) Next This is working ok, but the whole line.length is appended for number2. The line ex. Some text:my number some text-my number2. I want my number appended to txtFound, and my number2 appended to txtFound2. With my code only number2 can be appended correct.
View 4 RepliesI am trying to create a tool which I would input a word in a text box and it would search the path i give it to look for a word in a notepad file and copy the whole line to a new notepad and paste it.
i did this for now, i am able but i am able to copy all the text from the note pad and put it in a textbox for now..
Dim FILE_NAME As String = "P: est est.txt"
Dim objReader As New System.IO.StreamReader(FILE_NAME)
Dim TextLine As String
[Code].....
I am having trouble to get the command to ask them to go read the text file and copy only the line for the word I put in the input box and to put it in a new notepad.
I am trying to remove VB6 type code and use VB.Net code, in particular, remove "Left" and use "Substring". This code does not do what the old style code does. It seams to ignore the first two chars and forces the msgbox prompt no matter what I type in the textbox (at "Leave").
Private Sub TextBox5_Leave(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles TextBox5.Leave
If TextBox5.Text = "" Then
'Do nothing

First let me say that I am not sure whether or not this should go in this section or the API section, and if it needs to be moved I apologize. My issue is fairly straight forward, but for some reason I cannot get it to work.
I am trying to send a command to a command line and then submit the command. I have been trying without success to get this to work in v2008 Express and v2010 Express, Here is the code I am trying to us:
Private Declare Function FindWindow Lib "user32" Alias "FindWindowA" ( _
ByVal lpClassName As String, _
ByVal lpWindowName As String _

I am currently using psexec.exe from PsTools to send a command to a remote system to fire a command through a command prompt however I am finding that the shell I am doing does not seem to like the spaces in the path.

Any ideas on how I handle the following error thrown in the SqlDataAdapter.Fill as a result of the BeginTrans in the callee?
System.InvalidOperationException = {"ExecuteReader requires the command to have a transaction when the connection assigned to the command is in a pending local transaction.The Transaction property of the command has not been initialized."}

Public Sub ExecuteTransaction(ByVal connectionString As String) Using connection As New OleDbConnection(connectionString)

I am using the following code to run defrag and to analyze if the C: drive requires defragmentation:
Dim analyze As Process = System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("C:WindowsSystem32defrag.exe", "C: /a /h /u /v")
This process runs through analyzing, runs it in normal mode & prints the progress to the command window.
My problem is that as soon as the process is complete the command window closes. I need it to stay open so that I can read the results.
I am trying to send a command to the external command line (cmd.exe) from the Windows form application that I'm writing in VB.NET (using VS2008).
I can only access the external program thru the command line (its not my program) and I must do so from a form app.
I am trying to use the following code. I am able to call a cmd.exe window, but I can't pass the command line my command.
Using mp As New Process
With mp.StartInfo
.FileName = "cmd.exe"

I'm getting an ArgumentOutOfRange error when using substring function in .NET. I'm new to .NET so probably doing something wrong. I have a txtField, which is a text field component in GUI. I'm using Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express
txtField.Substring(txtField.Length-4,txtField.Length-1)
If txt.Field contains only numberic values it works ok, but as soon as the text field contains characters it breaks.
I have a piece of code that I am using a for next statement and stepping through a string a little bit at a time. The problem is I get an error towards the end of my loop because my substring goes beyond the bounds of my string.
Dim Right As Integer = StartNumber.Value
Dim left As Integer = LengthNumber.Value
Dim i As Integer = 0

Also my streamwriter is not writing to my file?
I have a string that contains a file location[code]..."
I want to get a substring of String 1 that does not contain the name of the actual file (e.g. "C:SomeDirectoryEntries")
Which one would you prefer to extract a sub-string from the given string and why?I am thinking that since Left and Right are VB functions and not .NET functions, they may cause problems in the future in terms of compatibility.
View 3 RepliesThis question was resolved in C#, and I don't know how to do it in VB net. I want to search through a directory of files and see if my string is contained within any of the filenames. Then I just need a bolean answer if it exists or not. I know how to use the file.exists...this is not what I need. The link below is to the C# response. How to check if filename contains substring in C#
[Code]...
Example i have string =D:aaabddddd.jpg
string =D:aaabdddddfsdfsdfdd.jpg
i want to flexible sub string from right to ""
so answer=ddddd.jpg and dddddfsdfsdfdd.jpg
My problem is at SubString will do the job for me, but next string could look like this: 101OldGranny91222 So I can't determind the number - for the split - of char in the string, because it changes depending on there name etc.

I have a text label, split half-and-half with a "/".label1.text = "I like dogs/I like cats"This will not be the same text (and not the same textlength)every times. I need to delete everything before the "/" with only a button. (for example, delete "I like dogs")

View 3 RepliesI am using a CheckedListBox that is populated with Filenames (full path, i.e. C:TestTest.jpg)When I have the files that I want in the CheckedListBox I wish to click a Start Button which will process the list one at a time using an exe program that runs on the Command Line. There are arguments that need to pass to the command line as well as the file location in order for the program to process.I currently have it working but the issue is the loop finishes quickly and it is left up to the CMD.exe to finish the process. What I would like is for the LOOP to wait until each file completes processing before passing the command for the next file in the CheckedListBox.There some reasons I wish for it to work this way.
1) I would like to have a button that can Pause/Restart the Loop.
2) I would like to have a button that can Stop the Loop so the whole process can end.
3) I would like to have the Loop remove each file one by one from the CheckedListBox after it has been processed.
4) I would like to display a Message once all the files have been processed.
5) And if it were possible I would like to report the status either by text or a progress bar showing where it is at in the process.
6) And the ability to add some error handling if possible.
Since the Loop finishes so quickly as it just passes the command to the command line using the & as a seperator it is the command line that is handling the rest of the process. Because of this there is not control over it in the GUI.The code I am using allows the Command Line text to display in the Form so it won't open up a seperate window to run CMD.exe. This is the desired affect as I would like everything to appear to run from within the Form itself.

User need to select their prefferable data to show in report. What i did is i have a clear command first to delete the temporary table. The temporary table is basically a table to stored user selection parameter data. After the clear command, i have
a insert command to insert user selection data into the temporary table. What happened now is when i run the program exe, first run of the report is work fined, but not the second and the following times of execution. It will return null or blank report. The weird thing is when i execute it from development environment, it seem like the report is able to pick up user selection parameter and run the report for the first times and the subsequent execution.
i have seen this in many codes, just not sure where to start and how to call the command. what i'm talking about is having code as such (this is for save file dialog):

substring and the indexOf method
I have this problem that I'm going in circles on. The error message is "no accessible IndexOf can be called with these arguments."
My professor said that "to search for the string Los Angeles and substring will return it from the textbox, but it needs to know what position to start returning a word at, and that is where the IndexOf comes in." Does that mean substring and IndexOf are used together? That's what I did and may be the problem. Here's the code:
Private Sub btnOrder_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) Handles btnOrder.Click
'Declare variables

Can a substring have mutiple arguments? I am pulling a substring from a drop down list into my database for records, the string is between 6 and 8 numbers, is it possible to pass more than one argument to make this work?

I want to sort the binding source column (Product Code) which formatted like (AA-AAA AAA AAAA)
but i do not want straight sort on product code column, i want the sort as :
substring of 1,2 + 8,3 + 3,3 and then the rest of the column.
I know i can do it in the table direct using the OrderBy and the substring function, but the problem is that sort is not static it is dynamic according to different status means it change the substring order.
