View 3 Repliesthis is more a theoretical question i asked myself.I remembered that BinarySearch of an ordered List(Collection in general) is faster than finding Rows with Datatable.Rows.Find or DataTable.FindByPK with a primary key value.Hence i fill a Datatable from Database in a shared constructor and immediately after that a List(of Int32) that contains all primary keys from that table. Later i will check with BinarySearch if the List contains primary-key values. But because the datatable contains only the PK-Column anyway, i asked myself if there is a way to avoid the huge overhead of filling a Datatable and after that adding all Rows to a List. Is it possible to fill a generic List(or other collection-type) instead of a Datatable/Dataset directly from a Dataadapter?Maybe i'm off the track and there is another way to avoid the Extra-Loop that i'm missing.

I was wondering if there is a way to change the Fill command text of a datatable before issuing it.I need this because the table I am opening has over 15 thousand rows and it hangs for a while in the network when filling the table. So I would like to tell it what to SELECT instead of getting the whole table and then applying a filter.If there's a way of doing that without changing the fill command, it will also work for me.

View 2 RepliesI've done a little bit of LINQ but I almost exclusively return some elements from a collection based on some criteria. Now I'm trying to do something similar; let's say I have 50 winForm Controls in a collection - I want to set the .Visible property = True based on the controls name.
How would I do that? Below is my failed attempt.

I am working on a Windows forms project that connects to a Microsoft Access database, reads the the file, does some math and then provides some basic statistics back.I am teaching myself VB and I know the code below could be more efficient.However, right now I am just trying to make it functional.The program filters the data it needs via sql, and there are several sql statements.I separated the code for each of the sql statements and into a subroutine so that I could call each one when the form loads and also when the user clicks a button to update.The program works fine on the form load, however, when you click the update button you get the following error on the 'odaCalls.Fill' in subroutine Count(): "The select command property has not been initialized before calling 'Fill'.[code]

I'm going through a book which is teaching me some basic coding principles of the language. The current section is detailing how to set up a master child form using two tables linked with a foreign key. The master table is displayed as a number of text boxes, and below is a grid with the child table which shows related records to whatever master record you happen to be checking out. At the top of the screen are the default navigation controls that are added with the grid. The master table is named Person and the child table Book. They are linked using a foreign key and have cascade set up on them.
The book informed me of the code required under the save icon on the navigation control so that when it is clicked both tables will be updated as required. It is as follows:

I have double checked that the code matches that shown, so this should in theory work fine. But if I manually delete a record from the Book (child table) grid and then click the Save icon on the navigation bar it comes up with the error "Update Requires A Valid DeleteCommand when passed DataRow collection with deleted rows".
Why changes made are not permanently saved to the database? I gather that it's using a "copy" of the data in the database but how do I get the code/form to make changes to the actual underlying database records as well as just the copy? I find this system very unusual, if someone deletes a record in the application why would anyone want this to be just done temporarily?

This piece of code grabs a customers hire record using their hire ID and displays their details in multiple textboxes. It all works fine and well, however, I can only run it once. If I type in another customers hire record ID it just displays the first customers details that were materialised, which I assume is because the datatable has been populated and not refreshed based on the new hire record ID I've entered.

With this I can search a column of a datagridview for a match. It works all fine and well, until I insert a new record into the database at which point I refresh the datagridview to display the newly added record. After I do this, I can no longer search using the textbox. Once again, I'm not quite sure what to do to fix this issue.
Any ideas on how I handle the following error thrown in the SqlDataAdapter.Fill as a result of the BeginTrans in the callee?

I am using the following code to run defrag and to analyze if the C: drive requires defragmentation:

This process runs through analyzing, runs it in normal mode & prints the progress to the command window.
My problem is that as soon as the process is complete the command window closes. I need it to stay open so that I can read the results.

I am using a CheckedListBox that is populated with Filenames (full path, i.e. C:TestTest.jpg)When I have the files that I want in the CheckedListBox I wish to click a Start Button which will process the list one at a time using an exe program that runs on the Command Line. There are arguments that need to pass to the command line as well as the file location in order for the program to process.I currently have it working but the issue is the loop finishes quickly and it is left up to the CMD.exe to finish the process. What I would like is for the LOOP to wait until each file completes processing before passing the command for the next file in the CheckedListBox.There some reasons I wish for it to work this way.
1) I would like to have a button that can Pause/Restart the Loop.
2) I would like to have a button that can Stop the Loop so the whole process can end.
3) I would like to have the Loop remove each file one by one from the CheckedListBox after it has been processed.
4) I would like to display a Message once all the files have been processed.
5) And if it were possible I would like to report the status either by text or a progress bar showing where it is at in the process.
6) And the ability to add some error handling if possible.
Since the Loop finishes so quickly as it just passes the command to the command line using the & as a seperator it is the command line that is handling the rest of the process. Because of this there is not control over it in the GUI.The code I am using allows the Command Line text to display in the Form so it won't open up a seperate window to run CMD.exe. This is the desired affect as I would like everything to appear to run from within the Form itself.

User need to select their prefferable data to show in report. What i did is i have a clear command first to delete the temporary table. The temporary table is basically a table to stored user selection parameter data. After the clear command, i have
a insert command to insert user selection data into the temporary table. What happened now is when i run the program exe, first run of the report is work fined, but not the second and the following times of execution. It will return null or blank report. The weird thing is when i execute it from development environment, it seem like the report is able to pick up user selection parameter and run the report for the first times and the subsequent execution.
