Take Some Existing Classes We Retrieve From A Web Service And Hiding Public Functions?
Nov 18, 2009
[code]...
EDIT: The above class is just an example of what could be returned from a web service. I won't have access to modify it at all, sorry if I didn't make that clear. Is it possible to somehow make a clone this class, so that it retains all of the properties values, but hides the fact that there is a Public function?I'd like to be able to take some existing classes we retrieve from a web service(which we didn't write) and be able to pass them on for use in an application, but without exposing the functions. I don't want to go down the route of creating my own classes that specifically define each property and write the values in (due to the sheer size of some of them), so I'm looking to see if there is anything dynamic I can utilise (maybe there is a way using reflection?).
I would like an overview of System.EventArgs. I have an understanding of System.Object where I can pass data between subroutines and functions using Public Classes. I am curious what EventArgs do?
the client has asked for all forms and classes to be hidden from the main project, so when he sells it, they will only be able to see part of the project and not all the classes and forms. My Solution: I have created another project called project2, and added all the forms and classes from main project, fixed all errors and compiled it.I deleted all the forms from the main project and added a reference so that it gets all the forms from the other project by referencing the dll file, but it does not seem to work and get a lot of errors.is there an easier way of hiding the forms and classes from the main project or do I need to do more then just add the reference.
I'm refactoring my VB project into 2 projects, one being a utility library that I want to share with future projects. My solution's layout is like this:[code].....
util is created as a class library, and the member files added into it. I've then added util into the main project's references. However, when I try to call functions in util.vb from my main project files, I get build errors like this:
error BC30451: Name 'LogException' is not declared.
error BC30002: Type 'VarFile' is not defined.
These are defined in util.vb, and it compiled fine when it was part of the main project. The declarations look like this: (I've trimmed out the details)[code].....
I can add util.vb "as link" into the main project and it will solve all the build errors, but that seems to defeat the purpose of refactoring out the class library - I would like to develop this library separately, and not always have to keep track of which file links I haven't added in my main project.
I have a Module in VB.NET called Math.vb and in that module, I created a Function that displays returns the percentage of one number to another. I have a Sub that calls the Function and I call the Sub from my Form1 class. Is there an advantage/disadvantage to putting the function in the class or the module?
is there any reason why we couldn't add/extend an interface to an already existing class?
i believe this would be v useful. it would be like drawing links from my class to already existing classes, and drawing links from already existing classes to already existing classes
I have a MDI application and a very complicated class there which populates its properties from a dataset derived from an external database. Each form, including child forms have to be able to access that class and use its properties thorughout the whole session.I don't know where to 'preserve' these property values within the application. I kmow many books etc. suggest not to use public variables but I really can't find a way to solve this other than to use a public variable (which is a list(of my custom class) in this case. I have a separate class called PublicItems.vb and declared there my public variable as
Public Shared secuniverse As List(Of myCustomClass)Is there something wrong with the syntax because if I try to use the variable secuniverse in my main application class, I get the following exception:'sectoruniverse' is not declared. It may be inaccessible due to its protection level.
The way my code is now its all basically in one class and I want to move different functions into other classes to organise it a bit. What is the best way to do this as I have been having problems I was just bringing in a new Main class when I needed to call the functions in my main class but this would give errors when I run the program and not let me run it?
Private mc as new Main()mc.functionNeeded But the error when I try to run"Stack over flow exception"
An unhandled exception of type 'System.StackOverflowException' occurred in System.Windows.Forms.dll
Any tips on how this is done. I couldnt find any info on it (probably because its so basic)
I am integrating two disparate data sources where each value may depend on one or more other derived elements. This app runs as a windows service.Currently all my code is in a single class.I am upgrading to 2010 and wondering if best practices would be to break out my functions into multiple classes - there are over 100 data elements that need to be constructed. The following is an example of a couple derived items:(Is there a better way to do this - when complete I will pass this app off to someone else to support and want to make sure I give them the best beginning.[code]......
I was thinking about writing some VB 2005 code that would be able to open an excel file and keep it open while I do things in separate functions/subs basically just check boxes, so each check box is its own sub but HOW do I do that with out opening and closing the excel file for every check box sub, since every time I make a check box the sub comes up as private?
I have an asp.net web app. It has a shared class, and I want to have the connection string the same through out the site. My string is in my web config, but I don't want to type this all over the place:
I have written a method to replace multiple characters in a string. Is it possible to overload my own method to the existing method "Replace" in the String namespace?
Function Replace(ByVal inValue As String, ByVal ParamArray replacechars() As String) As String For i As Integer = 0 To UBound(replacechars) Step 2
[Code].....
As you can see it have a different signature from the public method so I think it would be nice to have my method overloading the existing method
I can live with it if it isn't possible. See it as a "nice to have"
Is it considered an acceptable practice to use Modules instead of Classes with Shared member functions in VB.Net?I tend to avoid Modules, because they feel like left over remains from VB6 and don't really seem to fit in anymore. On the other hand, there doesn't seem to be much difference between using a Module and a Class with only Shared members.
When you develop a class library that will be used by others, are there any guidelines on how you decide what namespace to put it under? I often find third party classes just use the company name as the root namespace but I was also wondering if it is frowned upon (or even possible) to add one of your own classes to an existing framework namespace.
I'd like to get a more refined programming style and I was wondering if any of you might give me a hand...(How to declare public variables, constants, functions...in a proper way),is there any useful link or pdf document I could have a look in order to improve my style?
give me a good resource that explains the difference between a Private, Public, Shared Functions/Sub/Variables? I normally use Public for Subs/Functions inside of Modules I call from other parts of the program. But I'd like to get more of an understanding of how and when to use them. I want as little as impact to a system that is running my programs as possible, so i guess the key here is I'm trying to just get more proficient in my coding.
I've got a program that runs from one Windows form, Form1, with stuff declared all in that class: public variables, public functions, subs, etc. I decided that the form was getting cluttered, so I added one button to bring up a new form, Form2, and I put some of the buttons & check boxes for testing over there, so that Form1 can be more visually clean. Problem: when I go to put the code for the tests into the buttons on Form2, none of the public variables or subs or functions that reside in Form1 are visible in Form2. What statement/s do I need to add (and where) so that the public "stuff" that's declared in the class for Form1 is visible within Form2, please?
As my latest questions have stated, i am in a process of researching on Silverlight 3 and its application as a suitable RIA solution to a pre-built project a client of ours wishes to webify. And my experience in .Net and silverlight is about 3 - 4 weeks.I have now become aware of .Net RIA Services. I require to use an existing VB class; which was created as a quick wrapper class to emulate a small piece of the client's application code. This is used as a proof of concept. It contains one function which uses the client's DLL files to return a simple data type This class has already been used successfully with Flex/Weborb combination.I unfortunately do not have enough knowledge or experience in Silverlight/RIA Services to grasp what it is i have to do to get the file working. All the examples I find online only specify the method where you use a database as dataSource etc.Could you please inform me how i would go about implementing RIA Services with Silverlight 3, using existing code/classes with no DB? Or could you point me in a direction for further research on the matter?
I am trying to get a handle on SyncLock and multithreading, but I am having some trouble wrapping my head around exactly how it should be implemented. I have a Public Class Utilities with a many Shared Functions. I want to make sure that each function can only be executed when there are no other concurrent calls to the same function. So If I have 2 functions, A and B in a Public Class Utilities, what is the syntax so that a function "locks" while it is being executed, preventing any subsequent calls until the "locking" thread has completed?
CODE
Public Class Utilities
Public Shared Function A (ByRef i As Integer) As Integer
[CODE].............................
I know I need to wrap the statements of execution in a SyncLock block, but I am unsure of the scope of the parameter used with SyncLock...is it private to the function, class, etc? Can the same object be used to lock both functions if they are independent?
I'm trying to update an application from vb6 to vb.net. The orig app used the winsock control. Unfortunately I can't nor do I want to use it in the re-write. Are there any decent public classes with events that wrap the Socket class?
I want to know what are classes , objects , a namespace , subroutines, functions, methods, properties and differemce betweem byval and byref in your words.
I seem to be having a problem with controls that I am creating as new classes (not UserControls) inheriting from an existing system control. Everything seems ok while I create the control code, through to the compile (which is successful and adds the control to the toolbox) and dragging the control from the toolbox to the GUI surface. However, when I then debug or compile the project, I get a message such
How to Retrieve the existing vb controls from a running exe file [code]Application 2 should Retrieve the existing vb control names from a running Application1..Application1 may consists of textbox, combobox, radio button, checkbox, button etc..I am presently using Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition
I have an executable that now has a requirement to expose data in XML format via a web service which can be queried by a browser. While I've seen tons about consuming web services and creating web services in web projects, I've not found anything that adequately explains adding such a service (or an equivelant) to an existing Windows app.
I need to add functionality to my web service calls so object translation and automatic retries are done and abstracted away.I would usually override the base class to add the extra functionality, but as the proxy methods aren't over-ridable I can't keep the method names the same. The only other option I can think of to do it this way is to use the 'Shadows' keyword to achieve what I want. What other methods do people use to add functionality to their web service proxy classes without modifying the generated classes?
I need to initialize an array variable that belongs to a class supported by a Web Service. Theoretically it should have looked like that: Dim k(100) As New Appoint2.BookingData()However, it throws up an error message saying that 'Arrays cannot be declared with New'.I have managed to find a walk around: Dim k As Appoint2.Unit() = New Appoint2.Unit() {}But it creates only a zero-length array and I have no idea how to define its length. Wherever I try to put its length parameter (100) an error message emerges.
