Unable To Launch And GUI Program From A Service?

Oct 22, 2011

I am trying to startup a simple VB.net program that has a GUI from a service. I have tried a few flavors of Process.Start and none of them allow the GUI to work. I can get the farthest using:

System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(
"C:ProgramDataWatcherStartIt.bat")
And from inside the batch:
start C:TestTestStart.exe

Eventually I get an "Interactive Services Detection" dialog telling me that a message is trying to be displayed and when I click View the message, I see my expected dialog but the program won't run. I am Running on Win7 Home 64 bit. My Simple GUI program was written in VB.net VS2008. I set the service properties to "allow interaction with the desktop" but this does not help.Is there any way to launch a program from within a service that will allow you to interact with the desktop?

I'm building a program to launch certain windows tools for administrators, but I can't get it to launch the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool.

Public Class Hardware_Tools
Private Sub btnWMDT_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnWMDT.Click
System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("C:WindowsSystem32MdSched.exe")

C# - Launch A Process In A User's Session From A Service?

Jun 27, 2010

In Windows Vista/7/2008/2008R2, is it at all possible to launch a process in a user's session from a service? Specifically, the local session would be most useful.Everything I've been reading seems to say this isn't possible, but I figured I'd ask here before giving up completely. My service signs on as Local System.

Launch A Winform Application From A Windows Service?

Aug 26, 2010

I run the app under current logged in user from the service. To give you background, I have a VB.NET Windows service whose sole functionality is to run a Winform App at a specified time. Apart from that it also sets a system wakeup timer so that the system can be woken up at the specified time, if it goes into standby/sleep, to run the app. This service has to cater to XP/Vista/Win7 desktops on our network. This service won't run on servers and laptops.

The Winform App shows a UI for the user to provide some inputs. If the user does not provide the input within 15 minutes, then it defaults the value and then goes into system tray icon. The user can click on the icon and change the values later (within in a specified time frame and that too only twice).

There is absolutely no interaction between the service and the winform app apart from the service starting the app. It also monitors if the app has been killed by the user/crashed. If it has been killed/crashed, then a new instance is run after 30 mins from previous run.

If there is no user logged on, then also I want the app to be run at the specified time. As I said before, the app has a default timer. So if some user has just logged off from the system, then defaults would be set by the winform app.Now coming to why I am stuck with this design - I cannot use TaskScheduler because it has been disabled on all machines and security team is not willing to change it. TaskScheduler had the option to wakeup the machine from sleep and other things. So basically I ended up creating a service which is acting like task scheduler.

Currently when I run the app.exe via process.start() within the service, its running under SYSTEM account as the service is also running under LOCAL SYSTEM. So basically I am not getting any UI. Is there anyway to run it under the current logged in user? I am not worried about multiple user login as we wont be running it on servers and switch user is not enabled on our desktops. Even if somebody has done a remote login via mstsc, then also I need the run the app and show the UI to the user.

Launch An External Program?

May 3, 2009

So I have my form, I add one combobox (combobox1) and a button that says "Launch..."Button 1's

Process.Start(ComboBox1.SelectedItem)

When you select a program from the combobox (combobox1) and click launch, it launches that program, for example, cmd.exe (command prompt) when I click the button, it launches the command prompt, but if I select a game (for example chess.exe, for vista), it says it can't find the file, this is because the search for the file is only: WindowsSystem32, how can I change that? OR, how can I add a reference that searches the WHOLE Disk, not just WindowsSystem32?

Launch VB Program Instead Of Default Browser?

Feb 8, 2006

Is there any way to make Windows call a VB program instead of the default Internet browser?

What I want to do is to use a VB program with buttons down the left-hand side that when clicked will launch that URL in the browser windows of the form. This will prevent users from surfing in places they shouldn't but still allow them to get to the sites they need to get to for their jobs. These buttons could also change based on the username of the person launching the program.

But it all depends on being able to call this program in place of the browser when they click on a link in a email or somewhere else.

VS 2005 Select And Launch Program?

Jul 26, 2010

I'd like to know how you can actually select(highlight) a program from a list of programs displayed in a list box in Windows Form. I've done research and most results end up with openFileDialog condition or have to manually type the directory path. But what I have currently is the display of a list of programs in a list box(like Add/Remove Programs) but I'd like to have the user launch it upon double-clicking or clicking on a button(after a program is highlighted).

In short, it's like selecting a program in Add/Remove Program but instead of the Uninstall button, I want it to be a Launch button. I believe I already have the executable path behind the codes with the registry so I just need to know how you can select, and launch.

(Below contains an example of the kind of code I'm having)

Public Partial Class MainForm
Public Sub New()
' The Me.InitializeComponent call is required for Windows Forms designer support.

Unable To Execute SQL Command In Windows Service

Jun 30, 2011

I'm working on creating a windows service that will send emails to a customer when they are within a month of having their submission expire. I'm using vb.net in Visual Studios 2008

Because it's a windows service it's very difficult to debug. Trying to narrow down my error I created a "sendDebugEmail" method that sends me an email if it gets to a certain line. The emails never make it past "dr = cmd.ExecuteReader()"

I'm wondering what I am doing wrong. My SQL statement should work fine. I've tested it in my SQL server database.

I've created a dummy_database that I just made in sql server as well. I added an INSERT sql statement for the dummy table i have in there just to see if i could actually access a database. All the table takes in is the line number and time it was sent. When I run my windows service that database updates just fine.[code]...

Multiple Windows Forms Opening Upon Program Launch

May 8, 2012

I am running Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express. I created a simple program that is nothing more than dozens of Windows Forms that are linked together by the various clickable buttons I put on each form. The program is like a "book" with several pages, and you jump to a specific page by clicking on specific buttons on the current page ("Windows Form").

My question is, how do I change my program so that when it is launched, instead of just 1 Windows Form opening, the program opens up several Windows Forms (of my choosing) automatically? In other words, instead of my "book" (VB program) opening "page 1," when I run it, I want it so that pages 4, 7, 8, 10, and 15, are "opened" whenever I run my "book."

Is there some code I need to insert into each Windows Form I wanted opened automatically when the program is loaded? Or is this a MS VB 2010 Express environment option I need to set?

Unable To Debug Web Service Project In Visual Studio 2008

May 19, 2009

I've been assigned a web app written in VB using VStudio.net 2003. I am trying to configure the source on my localhost (VStudio 2008) so I can explore and learn about the current app (before I begin any real changes) and I cannot get debugging working for the web service project(s).

Symptom 1: "Unable to automatically step into the server. The remote procedure could not be debugged. This usually indicates that debugging has not been enabled on the server. See help for more information". This happens when I try to F11 (stepInto) the proxy class which invokes my actual web method.

Symptom 2: Pre-setting a breakpoint in my .asmx file code on the statement that will be invoked does not work (i.e. the debugger simply doesn't stop). Having described the situation, here's how my VStudio Solution is configured: Service1 - project created from the VB - WEB - ASP.NET Web Service Application template; this Service1 project contains my main .asmx source code I want to debug. Web.config for this project contains compilation defaultLanguage="vb" debug="true"
