I use a simple master-detail form using Visual basic 2005 express edition and ms sql server 2005 express edition, as well.
The master table is dept (deptno int, dname nvarchar(50)) .
The deail table is emp (empno int, deptno int, ename nvarchar(50)).
The primary key for the dept table is deptno and for the emp table is empno.
There is also a foreign key (deptno on emp table).
I created a new project, connected to a db (called test.mdf) and created a data source consisting the two of the above reffered tables.
I dragged and dropped these tables on the form and i noticed the following:
1)When the form opens... the system queries the database and displays the data on each block on the form.
2)I insert and/or update a record on the master table (dept) and everything goes well...
3)I try to insert and/or update a record on the detail table (emp) and nothing is changed on the detail table - without any error.
4)When i try to insert and/or update a record on the detail table (emp) which violates the primary key constraint or foreign key the system complaints...(as expected).

View 8 RepliesI used the DataSet Designer to create FTWDataSet which holds the AlarmText table from a SQLExpress database.This far my form contains ONLY Datagridview1.The code below successfully shows the contents of the AlarmText table plus the one added checkbox column (which I will populate with display-only data, and is not an issue here).

I have a table in Access with two key fields (let's call them Item and Cust). These key fields *combined* are the primary key. So each record must have a unique Item and User combination. It can have a duplicate Item with other records, and a duplicate Cust with other records, but not a duplicate of both. Because my "primary key" is a combination of two fields, I can't make a primary key on the table in Access (it only supports one field as a primary key).
I have another table in SQLServer which also has Item and Cust, but in addition, is has several descriptive fields that give more details about the Item and Cust. I'm trying to use ADO.NET to bring in that SQL Server table and UPDATE some matching fields in Access with the descriptive fields. [Code]

Several of the detail tables also have detail tables linked.Now I need to add a master table that sits on top of my existing master table making it a detail table.

I have two forms, A and B, as master/detail forms. A has a grid and a button. When the button is clicked, B is instantiated and shown - at this point, B is a local variable. When stuff happens on B, I want to refresh the grid on A. I had intented to declare B WithEvents and have A monitor for when the event is raised, but that doesn't work, since B is decalred locally.
View 12 RepliesI have an ASP.NET MVC 2 project that renders conventional strongly typed pages, but on some of these pages I also want to use the page's object to render a specific area (div) in the navigation section of the Master Page.
For example, if I have a Client object and associated strongly typed View, I want the View to be able to insert client-specific navigation items within a div in the Master Page's navigation.
I've actually achieved this in a not very elegant fashion by creating a ViewData item to hold the Client object - this is in addition to returning the client object with the View. The Master Page then takes the ViewData object and, if it's not null, renders the client-specific navigation section. This way of doing things will get very ugly as the number of different objects that have to be handled increases.
Any right way of selecting data and updating? This code is working, but i wonder if there is a way to have only one update command which will update all tables?

I am using two separate procedures. The problem is, after inserting the record into master, and while inserting into the transaction table, if any interruption occurs I want to abort the corresponding insert of the master table.

View 3 RepliesI have a project which contains a large number of lookup tables, and I have all of these lookup tables represented in a single typed DataSet, which contains TableAdapters for each lookup. I've designed an editor for these lookup tables, which should allow editing of one of these at a time. My front-end is written in VB and WinForms, the back-end is a SOAP web service; I can successfully pass the changes to the DataSet back to the web service, but can't find a way to use a TableAdapter to update the single table that has been changed.
What I'm trying to do is instantiate the appropriate TableAdapter for the updated DataTable by sending the name of the table back to the web service along with the DataSet, then referring to the TableAdapter with a dynamic name. The normal way to instantiate a TableAdapter is this:

What I'd like to do is this, but of course it doesn't work:
