Use Control.CheckForIllegalCrossThreadCalls = False And Bypass The Delegate?
Dec 9, 2011
So I have a custom control that basically acts like a listview, but it draws everything out and finds where the mouse is and all that. But when I have another class that goes in a chatroom and receives data, then raises an event to the parent (which is the main form), I then pass it through a delegate and then it adds to the custom control. This seems to take a lot longer to add items to the list than If I just use
Control.CheckForIllegalCrossThreadCalls = False and bypass the delegate? What should I do.
[code]...
Is there a faster way to pass all the info, or should I just bypass the cross thread check and not use a delegate?

Is there any cause that this property's value isn't false by default?. When you work with threads, you always require to update user interface from the child thread, I think that may be false is not the default value because of its side effects, wich I don't know.

from the documentation we have this: Multicast Delegate: Represents a multicast delegate; that is, a delegate that can have more than one element in its invocation list.
so am i right to say that Multicast delegate is no different from a normal delegate other than the fact that it has arguments. so System.Action is a 'normal' delegate whereas System.Action(T)(Byval obj as T) is a multicast delegate?

I'm working with the DevExpress XtraGrid control.I have a routine that goes thru and adds all the controls on the current form dynamically, and launches on a seperate thread the routine for a given control to initialize it to the value that will be displayed to the end-user. Some of the controls are displaying calculated values, and take some time to return their values, so that's why we are doing it on a seperate thread.

I'm using a similar snippet of code for any control properties that have to be updated, and all work fine. On the above code when the actual Invoke is called, it APPEARS that the thread just ends and never calls the delegate, and doesn't return to finish either.

I have a (legacy) form where I had to add the InvokeRequired/BeginInvoke(Delegate) to avoid the "Control control name accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on." exception. This seems to work fine but there are some scenarios where the BeginInvoke is not calling the Delegate (which I can tell from the output log). I know how to turn a control's visible property to true or false, the only thing I don't know is: If I have, for instance, 40 group boxes in which only one is visible, when I click on a button, the first group box visible = false and the second group box visible = true, and when I click on it again, the second group box visible = false and the third group box visible = true, and so on I don't want to write the codes for every controls, since it will be quite time consuming, I want to use fewer codes to achieve this objective,

I am trying to write a VB.NET alternative to a C# anonymous function.I wish to call Threading.SynchronizationContext.Current.Send which expects a delegate of type Threading.SendOrPostCallback to be passed to it. The background is here, but because I wish to both pass in a string to MessageBox.Show and also capture the DialogResult I need to define another delegate within. I am struggling with the VB.NET syntax, both from the traditional delegate style, and lambda functions. My go at the traditional syntax is below, but I have gut feeling it should be much simpler than this:
Private Sub CollectMesssageBoxResultFromUserAsDelegate(ByVal messageToShow As String, ByRef wasCanceled As Boolean)
wasCanceled = False

There are keyloggers everywhere - for bank accounts, gaming accounts and etcetera. Low level keyboard hooks seem to be unable to bypass - and that would be dangerous. How would I try to ignore these keyboard hooks? Would sendkeys work? Or is there simply no way to do that?

VB GridView control will not allow code in the vb code file to access a data column that has its visible property set to false. When it is set to true, the data column can be accessed with no problem. Any suggestions as to how to correct this? I have looked through the documentation, text books, and I have not found anything that gave me any clue as to what the problem could be. I thought that the property was just applied to the column, not that it would remove the column from being accessible.

Is there anyway to disable the vb.net (2008) express popup for converting older projects as well as the security warning to browse the project? I'm fairly new to vb.net so of course I download lots of examples to learn off of and it is BEYOND annoying to have to convert every demo and then click ok to browse the code.

VB6 application MDI-Child architecture. Closing event is handled via QueryUnload event in both MDI and child form. Order of event trigger is MDI form closing(QueryUnload) event fires first followed by child form closing event(QueryUnload, I would like to call it as FormClosing itself as it is more comfortable and correct)Now after migration, order of event trigger is occuring in reverse. Child form closing event is firing first followed by MDI form closing event. We want to reverse the event triggering badly because of the logic written inside the closing events. Swapping the logic inside the events is not a viable option considering the huge changes we need to make (we have 31 vbprojects with 31 MDI forms and numerous child forms).
How I can make the MDI's closing event to be triggered first before child's closing event?

I have a validating event for a txtbox called txtname. If the user tries to leave txtname for another txt box without entering their name a messagebox comes up giving an error. I have an exit button which will when clicked ask you if you really want to leave then you can choose yes or no. I can't seem to figure out how to allow the user to click the exit button while leaving the txtname blank so it would bypass the error message and only bring up the exit prompt. Here's what I have coded for the validating event and the exit event.
Private Sub txtName_Validating(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.ComponentModel.CancelEventArgs) Handles txtName.Validating
If IsNumeric(txtName.Text) Then

While reading this threadthe code sample there came from MSDN, which was used to demonstrate the use of a delegate. I know what Delegates are. And I know how they work when it comes to things like crossing threads and even sinks.... how ever, the sample given is a simplecontrived example, and I'm wondering why/when would I use a delegate in this situation? Or in any situation? In my head, it seems it would have been easier/cleaner to call the function pointed to directly...

I heard once that .net introduced an already defined delegate with no parameter that we could use instead of creating one.
