I want to create an app that does NOT use a database or XML files, just in-memory data. On loading, it will populate one in-memory table with standard data. During operation, it will extract subsets of the data, change it, store it in a different table and display it in a datagrid. how this could be accomplished?
View 9 RepliesI read about localization in vb.net only to find that if I want to translate strings I will have to have multiple files for my compiled application (resources.dll for each language).
I want to keep my program and language translations strictly in one binary file. There is no problem with translating interface, but translating strings is a royal pain as I can't find any easy to understand articles.
I think of simply adding select case for current language and displaying text in current language, but I can't get it right.
I placed a datagrid in my form which l retrive data from my sql. i am using oledb connection. if i run the form i can retrive the data but i am not getting the data in the grid at first ,there is a "+" sign, i have to clik that then it shows the table name and after clicking the table name i can view the data displays in the grid..

This is what i am confused about; does the compiler creates a new variable automatically when i use the if statement without strictly declared variable? What approach is better in sense of performance?

The list do have many properties which displays as columns in the datagrid successfully.But my problem is how do I store the data in my local memory? The code is on a popup form that shouldn't ever get disposed. A new image is loaded onto the form every time it pops up. However, the process size for the application continues to grow each time it makes it through that code block.
I've tried objImage.Close() and .Flush(), objWebClient.Dispose(). The process size still grows by a good 4mb after every call. It's like the old image is kept in memory.

I wrote a procedure that builds a DataTable in memory using data stored on our DB2 database. The function builds a Multi-Level Bill of Materials (BoM), meaning that the data cannot simply be queried. The function works great and returns a nicely arranged DataTable object. However, I then need to query the in-memory DataTable against other tables on our server. What would be the best way to approach this problem? Should I make a DataTableAdapter for the Server tables and then build a DataView? I don't have too much experience yet with Data objects. (By the way, I looked into LINQ to DB2 and even installed IBM's addin's, but our server doesn't seem to support it at this time.)

View 10 RepliesIm getting a problem with one of my programs I have made in visual basic.NET where it gives me a memory error when i debug the program in the IDE. the exact error is this: "Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt". My program basically has a few forms with text fields on that get their text values from an access database on the same hard drive. Im wondering if im doing something wrong because my program just seems to eat up memory whenever it does anything. For example I have one form that has a combobox on it and when you change the drop down list selection it retreives a few strings from the database and puts them into the relevant text boxes, if you keep changing the selection then the memory usage (in task manager) just keeps going up and up. occasionally I get the error mentioned above when debugging but in my built version of the program it throws an exception everytime the memory usage gets past 49K.
Also I noticed when debugging in the "immediate window" frame I get the following message often:A first chance exception of type 'System. Invalid OperationException' occurred in System.Data.dll...Do I need to somehow be "releasing" the memory that is used to gather data once it becomes redundant?

Im designing a web browser and i continue to receive this error after going to about 3 websites it crashes with that error.
I have a BackgroundWorker object that I instantiated to perform a DB process on a background thread ansynchronously. I have event handlers for DoWork and RunWorkerCompleted. I can tell that the BackgroundWorker is disposing of itself because I added a message box into the Disposed event handler.Is it necessary to detach the event handlers to ensure that the memory is cleaned up and that there are not memory leaks?
View 1 RepliesI've noticed that every time I start a new thread in my program, the memory usage jumps about 1000k and it never goes back down. I have ensured that the thread is no longer running, and only one instance of my worker thread is ever running at a time. I am using ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem and ASyncOperation to get stuff done. The program starts using a Sub Main in a module that uses STAThread; I read that using STAThread instead of MTAThread makes it impossible for the Garbage Collector to get in and consider objects for garbage collection. However, when I change the STAThread to an MTAThread, the WebBrowser control in my frmMain cannot be instantiated.
I get this exception:

Additional information: ActiveX control '8856f961-340a-11d0-a96b-00c04fd705a2' cannot be instantiated because the current thread is not in a single-threaded apartment. I do threading with the WebBrowser control, so will using MTAThread fix my problem? If so, how should I partition my code so that the WebBrowser control won't be affected by the above exception? I call the thread repeatedly with a timer (although only one instance ever runs at a time), and my program's memory usage starts at about 5000k and can jump to 300,000k+ depending on many times the thread needs to be called.
Why does the code below cause a memory leak when executed? The error only happens when I use Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or 2008 in vb.net language. If I use C # is, there is no problem.

I have 200,000 rows data need to be inserted into MSSQL 2005 express. I have 4G memory. From the beginning, there is 2.0G used. Then, I use microsoft text driver to load text file into datagridview. Memory rise to about 2.8 GB.I start write data row by row from datagrid view. Memory usage keep rising , then OutOfMemory exception is catched.I try to use GC.Collect and for System.Data.Odbc.OdbcConnection , I also try .Dispose(). But it is no use.How can I keeing the memory within about 3.0GB for this usage ? I monitor .vhost.exe. It rise to more than 1G.
View 2 RepliesI have an ArrayList that stores 100,000+ numbers inside of it. Each number is 10 digits in length or smaller. The program itself has data input into it, of which it loops through the user input to see if any of their numbers are already in the array using if ArrayList.Contains(userinput).
It would appear that when having an ArrayList of this size a LOT of memory is being used. Would there be a faster way to run this, E.g. Database or If TextFile.Contains(Line)?
I am using these API functions for my project where I am handling 3 unmanaged DLLs of two external apps, basically all it does is to carry data back and forth between these external applications. The project needs a lot of use of pointers, passing pointers and reading/writing to memory so both applications can talk to each other.

View 6 RepliesI recently wrote a program that collects information from the network can displays it in a DGV for the user to see. I tested this on networks where I would end up with several thousand items brought back and all worked fine, very little memory increase and once the search had finished the memory usage went back to pretty much what it was before the search, so I assume I have no major memory leaks that I should be concerned about (I'm careful to always dispose of things and clear large variables where possible).
However, a new company has now started using my application and they have several hundred thousand items that my program will find. They reported that they leave the program running its search for a few hours and most of the time it crashes with an Out Of Memory exception. Now I did have my app do some caching of certain information to avoid querying the network more than was necessary so I thought well maybe this is what is causing it but I added an option to turn that off and they say it still happens. So the only thing I can see it being is simply the amount of data that the program is finding and having to store in memory.once my application has gathered information about the items it stores them in a List(Of MyItemClass) and then when the search is complete the items are added to the DGV. So I'm thinking maybe its just the size of this List(Of MyItemClass) that is simply getting too large. Bear in mind that each instance of MyItemClass in this List can have quite a lot of information in it as it has several properties that are List(Of String) that may contain a few thousand strings in some scenarios.How do you deal with such large amounts of data without running out of memory?I'm assuming the only option I have got is to 'page' some of the data to a temporary file on disk once I get over a certain number of items in the List(Of MyItemClass)?
I have the following code that connects to a server and expects data from it.Is it normal that working memory of my program increases every time I receive something from the server I connect to?The larger I make the network buffer, the more increase that is added to my working memory (in task manager)The data I receive is about 50 bytes. So I minimized that size of the buffer to 128.

When I go to "new project" and choose "Windows Form Application" I get this error.I have tried multiple uninstall/reinstall with no result.A microsoft reply to this suggested that I needed: " .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 " I checked, and I did not have the .netframework 2.0 service Pack 1.
When I tried to download and install the above from Microsoft.com, the istaller said that "it was not allowsed" and I was not able to install the service pack 1.
I tried Uninstalling net framework 3.5, 3.0, 2.0 and then reinstalling .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1; then reinstalling Visual basic 2008 express edition. At the reinstall of Visual basic 2008, .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1 is unistalled by .net framework service pack 2.When I check the foruims for simiar problems, the formus are mostly for Visual basic 5.0, or other programs that I do not have.

The follow code can be called about 6K times on the server it is run on then gets a out of memory error in the last catch statement. I don't see what is wrong with the code, it works well up until the out of memory..

I have two forms, Form1 and Form2. Form2 has a button to show OpenFileDialog. I call Form2 from Form1 by a button. My startUp Form is Form1. When i start debugging, i press my Form1's button to show my Form2, it shows, but when i click On Form2's Button to show OpenFileDialog it is giving me exception that
