I don't know if I have gone blind, or if I am just searching in the wrong place, but what is the cursor that Windows uses for standard dragging, and where is it found? I can see the icon that is used when something is dragged over a control that is not a drop target, but not the control that is used for dragging elsewhere.

I noticed that adding a MenuStrip (from the Toolbox) to my form design doesn't yield a menu bar like many native Windows applications. Instead I get a menu bar like Visual Studio's own. None of the style settings for MenuStrip appear to mimic the much more common native menu bar.Is there a way to add a menu bar to my Windows Forms application that looks the same as the one you see in Notepad, Task Manager and others? (Preferably with the designer, but I wouldn't mind adding it programmatically either.)

In VS.Net 2008, if you choose a new form with the Explorer template, the form is preloaded with a menu strip, and all the items have the familar save, print, open, etc, icons/bitmaps. I would like to use these icons in other forms, but the form does not appear to reveal the location of these icons or where they came from. Does anyone know where they are? If I find them and point to them, can I be assured that these icons are in the same place on any computer (or do I need to embed them in the exe)?
View 2 RepliesI've run into an issue with Access Key in either Visual Basic or C#... also happens whether on my windows 7 64 but laptop or my Windows Vista 32 bit laptop - in Visual Studio 2010 professional... I create an Access Key (for example E&xit)... while the underline under the x shows up in the development area, it does NOT show up when I run the application NOR does it work... for example, press alt-x does not run the code associated with the exit (nor does a break into that code show it gets into that code).When I try it in a menu, it is a little different at first the underline under the access key does not show up but then after I access something by hand, it sometimes shows up and is usable.

I have been developing a WM6 application using the VS2008 PE trial, the trial period has now ended, hence the purchase of VS2008 SE (full not upgrade). As a private user for hobby purposes I can not afford VS2008 PE. I am astonished to learn that in actual fact VS2008 SE is a step back from VS2005 SE in that the WM6 SDK's on not supported. I have read the below thread: url...I am also annoyed that on the WM6 SDK refresh download page it states clearly that VS2005 SE or higher must be used - hence the purchase of VS 2008 SE.As I have installed on my PC a full version of VS2005 SE and VS2008 SE, is there a way to develop WM6 devices with the tools I have or is VS2008 PE the only solution.

View 9 RepliesMy app (which runs ok as a standard user) requires updates to be installed, but I don't want to have to input the administrator username/password each time nor do I want to increase user privileges to administrator.
I have a windows service which handles the downloading of updates etc (running as Local System) but the start command needs to come from the main app (running as a standard user). This is not permitted and I get Access Denied.
I understand why this is happening but is there an alternative way to achieve this? I want to handle program updates as the standard user without using ClickOnce or installing to a non Program Files folder.
Does anyone know the font + size for a standard message box in Windows Vista?
View 2 RepliesWhen I select a standard windows form at design time, then in the toolbox, under the "general" section, there are ellipse, line, and rectangle, but they are all gray and so can't be used and I can't find any way to make them not gray and thus usable. What am I missing? The help system tells how to USE them but nothing about how to make them accessible, it just assumes they are.

What's the best way of creating such a service, without resorting to using the C++ template?
I have a app that is starting up a thread that runs the standard windows defrag utility. It also gives the user the option to cancel the defrag if they want to. Problem is if the thread defrag is running on is canceled is there any data loss or does it just do the last operation and then exit. For example the code goes something like this:

Code works exactly as it should, runs the defrag on a separate thread so my UI remains responsive. I'm just worried about the effect of the cancel on it, when you call a thread abort does the program running in the thread know it's being canceled and "cleanly" close? I don't want to abort a file move operation when it's defraging and end up with a corrupt file.
I usually use standard button and do the settings like causevalidation etc if required.
i decided to use toolstrip and inserted some buttons but end up that it doesn't do the validation for control and also doesn't call leave event of textbox control.
so my question is, anyway to use regular button functionality for toolstripbutton or there is a way to add regular button on toolstrip.
I am trying to add a TabPage containing a UserControl to a TabControl at runtime, because the number of TabPages to add are determined at runtime.
The UserControl (objDataInfo) is just two Textboxes, two labels and two Radiobuttons, nothing too exciting...
The TextBoxes have their Anchor properties set to Left, Up, Right so they scale with the width of the usercontrol.
The TabPages are added in the constructor of the form, which takes the number of tabpages to create (n) as an argument:

I have a test app driven by bluetooth serial events In my form load code I hide the cursor so it doesn't get in the way of pictures (fullscreen) When one event is called by bluetooth, it brings up a msgbox and the user has to click OK. I tried Windows.Forms.Cursor.Show() but it doesn't work.
I'm guessing it's something to do with delegates and events and the form, but the debugger doesn't complain at any point. It just refuses to show the cursor. How can I get my serialport event to show the cursor? And then hide it after?

The only problem in using a ico file is that I can't set where the hot spot is and at the moment it is set in the middle of the icon which is no help

In previous versions of VB, you could drag or move the form to a convenient spot on the IDE. With 2010 express, the form is in the upper left hand corner and will not move. The toolbox essentially hides it.I have not been able to find a setting that changes this condition.

I cannot get the dragdrop event to fire when I drag a file from one tabpage to another tab page in the same tabcontrol. I can drag a file from my application and drop into windows explorer and and then drag from windows explorer into my app. That all works fine. And when I drag from one tabpage up to the top of the control, my program uses the tabcontrols dragover event to swap tabs....works fine also. ...Drag drop event fires...no problems
Say I have a list box with files on one tabpage, a list box with files from a different directory on another tabpage, I want to be able to drag the file over and drop it into the other listbox.I have done lots of testing on the variables in the dragdrop handlers to see if they are recognizing the switch in controls and they are. But the dragdrop event will not fire.
Im working on 'Virtual iPod Touch' project and I'm almost done..but one thing annoying me..im using drag 'n' drop to make lock slider..1 got 1 picturebox with lock arrow and 1 black (transparent/invisible) with allowed dropping...and its all ok but I want only I can slide (move mouse) in area for sliding (see a picture, but I think all of you understand).

i would like to implement the following:
on mouseup, if the picturebox position is within some amount maybe 50 or 100 (i dont know what units VB.net) uses, i would like it to be dropped exactly in a defined position. sort of like if you play checkers on yahoo games, you dont have to place the piece exactly on the square only approximately.
