I am trying to write an app to automate several things that I have to do on a new computer once I have deployed an image, hoping someone could give me some pointers for them:-
1) changing computer description - wmi perhaps?
2) changing computer name - again wmi perhaps?
3) changing permissions on an existing registry key to full control
4) changing the "time to display list of operating systems" when booting from 30 secs to 3
5) turn off simple file sharing
6) and setting current user account so that password doesn't expire - at moment I do it from cmd prompt and do "wmic useraccount where "name='name'" set passwordexpires = false
7) change power plan settings so put the computer to sleep is "never" on both battery and mains
my program read and writes into registry and has been working fine, until today when i tested it on a new server i got this error request for the permission of type system.security.permissions. registryPermissions, mscorlib,version=2.0.0.0. i checked the registry permission and made sure all allows are ticked.

I have developed an application in VS 2008 that generates crystal report.When I export the report to pdf,the application gets hang.The problem occurs since I can not create temp files in the temp folder i.e. %tmp%.The security level of windows 7 is high and it does not permits the application to create file.Can I alter the permissions in windows 7 using vb.net ?

But if I grant it write permission I don't get the error. Why would the executable need write permissions? I'm not writing anything to the root where it resides.

Brief overview of the situation is that my neighbors can't connect their Vista laptop to a shared folder on their computer running XP Home. They're getting access errors which I believe is because of the rights set on the folder. The problem is that XP Home won't let you adjust that and they're not upgrading.
I'm able to add the Everyone user to the directory I specify. But if I drag a new folder in or create a new folder, it does not have the Everyone user. Is there something I'm missing in this class that will let subfolders and files inherit the permissions?

At the moment we have a single column in thew users table which is named 'Access_Level', this field holds an int value (1 to 4) which is then use to determine users access to certain areas of the application. I've been struggling with this problem in VB.net for a while: whenever I try to access the My Documents, My video's or simular in Windows 7, I get an access denied error. The program that uses this code is a file-backup application, so it's important it can access everything. I am working on moving applications from Windows 2000 to new server Windows 2003 R2(64 Bit). I noticed that there are some VB programs and config files for those programs have been placed in Windows 2000 Registry. Some other applications are using them from different servers.Why do we use registry here? How can i move these to registry in windows 2003? Can I just move these or do I have to write VB programs to place them in 2003 registry?

I've had no issues with this in vista or xp. but windows 7 gives me permission errors. the problem is that Administrators group is missing from the permissions table in the registry for this key. I can fix this by opening regedit and right clicking permissions for this key and adding Administrators to the table. I am working on a program that needs to fetch remote windows pc's particular registry keys and then be able to modify them (for example the Run registry key). From what I have been reading I would need to use the OpenRemoteBaseKey to do so.
What I am not sure about is how do I have the program search the network for all of the Windows computers and generate a checklist when the computer names and IP addresses are not known ?
also for the OpenRemoteBaseKey to work do I have to know the password for the administrator account for each PC ?

i have a little Application where i read the names of Services from the Registry.In Windows XP no Problem at all but in Windows 7 they are not permanently in the Registry.They can be found in HKEY_USERS.DEFAULTSoftwareClassesLocal SettingsMuiCacheA246693477 but not permanently since its a cache it works after reboot but after a few hours these get deleted and i have no readable Names anymore only those Values like

View 10 RepliesI'm trying to write an application in VB 2010 that will allow me to send out stop and start commands for two services. I can get this to work in a batch file but not in VB, using either NET STOP and NET START and also using SC.exe Stop and SC.exe Start. But I don't seem to get anywhere if I try to use this in VB. So far this is what I have written, using the Print Spooler service as an example. The two services I actually want to stop and restart are the Server and Client services for efpos terminals that are attached to the computers. The service fails from time to time and I want to provide a solution for our users that is quick and easy for them to use, and most importantly doesn't require them to restart the computer, while they have a line up of people waiting to pay.
